Kenner MegaBug Gladiators Scorpion

My friend Scott from the MegoMuseum forums gifted me this toy recently; it’s his original one from childhood. It’s the Scorpion from the Kenner MegaBug Gladiators toy line, which we both share a love for.

Kenner introduced the MegaBug Gladiators in 1979, and while they are well-designed toys, it seems they didn’t market them in any meaningful way, and they just withered on the vine.

That’s a shame because the line was absolutely ahead of its time.  A series of futuristic war machines with an insect theme, the name “Gladiators” suggests a world where this sort of combat is sport. Oh man, I think we just wrote a Full Moon movie!

Three vehicles were in the range: Scorpion, MegaSpider and Dragon Fly. There is no world-building included anywhere. Kenner expected kids to build their own backstory, which, combined with little to no marketing, probably hurt this line.

Scorpion has some neat features: his claws are spring-loaded and can hold army men, his tail is posable for different attacks, and his legs crawl if you push it forward.

I’ve spoken to several former Kenner people over the years at Toy-Ventures, but none have much insight into this line, let alone remember it. That’s a nut I hope to crack in the coming months as I find this toy line an excellent companion piece to Micronauts and Shogun Warriors.

From a 1984 Toy Industry publication, we have this excellent ad for Street Hawk, which ABC was banking on being the next Knight Rider (narrator: “It wasn’t.”) However, I tuned in every week, and so did a lot of kids, so we mourned some of the cool toys they had in the pipeline. Kenner wins packaging award, Bionic Man

This article from 1976 is in celebration of Kenner winning packaging awards from two different associations for the Steve Scout and Six Million Dollar Man toy lines, respectively. With the Bionic Toylines, the colour pink was traditionally considered taboo in boy’s toys (as was black), but in doing this, Kenner stood apart in the action aisle. I associate pink with two toylines,  Kenner Steve Austin and Mego Batman; it’s been 50 years, and I still think that. Well done, Kenner.

1976 Action Figure Explosion!

I got this catalogue just after Christmas, and I wanted to close the year with the single reason I had to have it. This glorious page of plastic joy.  I never saw this page as a kid, but wow, that’s how the inside of my brain looked when I was five. 

This page, with it’s triple threat of Kenner Bionic Man, GI Joe Adventure Team, and Big Jim’s P.A.C.K hit me like a gut punch but in a good way, more like a “gut hug?” is that a thing? 

I enjoyed the book even more when I found the other page with my sixth birthday present, the GI Joe Capture Copter, which also was the “Monster Squad Copter” with my Lincoln Monsters. 

Not to mention the Sky Dive to Danger set, another birthday present and my vote for the single greatest GI Joe set ever.

1976 Action Figure Explosion!

No Offense to fans of Johnny West but I have almost no memory of the toy line. It’s probably because of stuff like Remco Star Trek and the amazing Lazervette had all of my attention and well kind of still do….

If you were a kid under ten in the late seventies, you witnessed one of the toy industry’s biggest game changers, the Kenner Star Wars line. Even though it was late for Christmas of ’77, Kenner came out with both barrels blazing the following year, utilizing their master toy license to the maximum with pages of product that made my seven-year-old heart flutter.

Even though I’m what you consider a SW dabbler at best, even I can’t resist that wonderful counter display. SWOON!

In my memory, that vinyl-caped Jawa came later but the catalogue disagrees with me. I remember seeing it and thinking it was a cop-out compared to mine. Tusken Raider and Death Squad Commander are two of my favourite figures, although I admit they were odd choices for an opening wave.

Any of these merchandisers full of products could likely put a kid through college, maybe not graduate school though.

The Landspeeder was really innovative and one of my favourites, it really looked like it was floating if you squinted, the droids always fell off the back but who cared?

The real reason Kenner made the figures 3 3/4″ was to sell us kids higher price point vehicles, what can I say other than “Thank You, Kenner”! I had pretty much every vehicle of this first wave, the primitive light and sound seemed really high-tech back then but wouldn’t even be found on a dollar store toy today.

I got the tie fighter for my eighth birthday, and my mom marched me down to the local ShopRite to get it, I remember they had the Comic Action Heroes Batmobiles on clearance and I almost waffled. I then proceeded to completely screw up the stickers on this thing ( I still suck at that!) which bothered me for the next four years.

Diecast vehicles were something every kid had to have, even though you had the larger versions.

I’m perplexed why they made Luke’s sabre yellow, the colour it’s never been.

Possibly one of the most overused toys in my room, the Death Star pretty much captivated me as a kid with its levels, trap doors, elevator and wonderful, wonderful trash compacter. Which is the only thing that survived my childhood. It may have been my favourite because I never really had a playset before, I don’t know but man was I hooked on them after this, it carried onto my adulthood and ate up most of my space.

Han and Chewie look seriously screwed in that picture, Vader is on top of them Saber drawn and they’re stuck in a doorway like the Three Stooges..

Kenner did a little label slap with a six-million-dollar man head set here.

Kenner also offered a 12″ line that wasn’t as popular as the 3 3/4″ figures, the big selling point to Leia was that girls could do her hair. Also, is calling her hair-do “Star Puffs” canon? 

That’s not Chewbacca, it’s a Big foot from the Six Million Dollar Man line of toys taking is place. That is so awesome.

Remote-controlled R2 D2 broke, I swear by January in my house and ended up being a fill-in for the 12″ figure.

It’s Plaid Stallions’ birthday, and it’s now old enough to drive! Starting this site on a lazy Saturday while my daughter napped was more important than I’d ever realized. I had no idea that when I started posting old catalogue photos online. Starting Plaid Stallions would open such an incredible door that would have me make new friends, create podcasts, go back to college, write books and magazines, and even make action figures based on crazy concepts.

None of this would have happened if I had just decided to watch TV, so it ranks as one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Has there ever been a toy that screams “It’s 1975!” louder than Kenner’s oddly titled Kiddie Fondue? Now you can have Carol from Girl Scouts over along with her husband Tom, and after dinner, you can show them a slideshow of your trip to the Wisconsin Dells. A fun time will be had by all; thanks, Kenner!

I was curious to know if this toy got made and a quick scan of eBay found a Kiddie Fondue for a very low price. Kenner Kiddie Fondue was not a hit and did not return for the 1976 season. That’s too bad because I was hoping for the “Conversation Pit” playset and “Kiddie Hi-Fi” complete with Tom Jones records.

SSP stood for “Super Sonic Power” and it was one of Kenner’s flagship brands in the 1970s, mostly because of the popularity of “Smash-Up Derby” a toy that combined boys love of cars with their desire to wreck stuff (Genius).

1978 saw a lot of goodness with the introduction of Monsters, Vans and Star Wars to the line, such a cool brew of fun.

Kenner’s SSP Star Wars vans were a great example of a label slap, where you decal an existing toy with a license. This was probably due to Kenner wanting to get as much Star Wars merch out as possible at the time. The Drag Race of the Galaxy set does look pretty bad ass. I wonder if anybody has a real van that looks like these? That has to exist right?

Kenner SSP Smash Up Derby was an ever-green toy for the company, these junk yard cars got redecorated every so often but were insanely popular when I was growing up. Heck, I had a set, which wasn’t much fun when you don’t have a sibling close in age.

Aw yeah, the 1970s were ALL ABOUT Van culture, which I sorely miss. These things look amazing, I especially love the Jaws-inspired shark.

These Monster SSP cars are amazing, each came with a T-Shirt Iron-On too, just because it was 1978. I don’t collect cars but I’d love that Frankenstein and excuse but doesn’t the Gargoyle look like a certain someone from the black lagoon?

Kenner Sea Wees were introduced to the market in 1979 and were an immediate hit that would last six years. In the toy world, anything that runs for 3 is considered a success. The Sea Wees concept were a series of  small mermaid dolls packaged with a baby and a sponge item that encouraged bath time play. 

Kenner was quick to change up the theme each year and for 1982, they introduced The Tropigals series of Sea Wees. While basically the same concept, the Tropigals now had grass skirts and a pet. In later years there would be changes to the formula including an Ice theme.

The Kenner Sea Wees Tropigal Playset appears to be more of a deluxe set, a bundle of items.

Four characters were introduced that year, Camille, Oceanna, Seabrina and Flora. I really want to work at the Kenner department of “Sea related puns”.
