Ideal Monster Squad prototype figures (eBay link)– What can I say? These are my grails and I’ve always wanted to own them but I have kids in college and need a new roof so have at them! We covered these wonderful little buggers in Issue 2 of Toy-Ventures Magazine. I’m just happy they somehow survived for nearly 50 years. I hope someday the van surfaces, that would be amazing. 

Popy Kamen Rider Challenge Machine (eBay Link)–

The Challenge Machines were another subject covered by Toy-Ventures magazine, this time in Issue 3. Popy had the rights to the Ideal Evel Knievel line in Japan. They made some tweaks to him and gave him two Superhero buddies.

This is Kamen Rider Stronger, who I imagine was on TV at the time. This kind of toy is just next-level awesome to me.

M*A*S*H Inflatable Bad (eBay Link)–

What every kid wants, to play a wounded GI or possibly drunk off his ass surgeon. Maybe I’m being too harsh on this, it’s just I have some trauma around sleeping on air mattresses. I did it a whole bunch in my 20s and they always deflate at 4 am! Always!

Monster Gallery Colouring Book (eBay Link)– This brilliant book illustrated by the great Mark Savee seems to have inspired a generation of Monster Fans in the 1970s. Heck, even Tomland toys ripped off the art for a series of Monster action figures. It’s so influential and great, people have to know!

Gerry Anderson’s UFO Schoolbag from Japan (eBay Link)–

Gerry Anderson’s UFO seems to have been warmly embraced everywhere but the US (even then it got some cool merch). that seems to be especially true for Japan. Japan got models, toys and even colouring books from the SHADO crew. I really love this school bag but I truly have no place to put it and I’d want to look at it every day.

Ebay Link: 1970 Gerry Anderson UFO Flexi Sonosheet Book Record Asahi Sonorama Japan This is a book and record set in Japanese based on the Gerry Anderson television series “UFO”, which is sort of dark for a kid’s record (look at the pictures). UFO is probably my favourite Anderson show and this is easily in my top five favorite pieces of memorabilia.

Witchie Poo Doll I will admit that the boat scene in the HR Pufnstuf movie did leave some scars on my 3 year old psyche but this doll is gorgeous!

Jumbo Japanese Superman Vinyl figure- It’s hard not to love vintage Japanese toys, especially when they’re of our icons with Neal Adams art. I just wish he was a Jumbo Machinder, although to be fair, I wish everything was.

Ebay Link: Little House on the Prairie Colorforms- I can’t believe this is a thing. I mean, I remember the show because my sister watched it all time because it had horses, also, she was bigger than me. If it comes with a Nelly, I might buy it.

EBAY LINK BEN COOPER SLEESTAK COSTUME– I think I post one of these every year. That’s because they show up when I’m flat broke, every time, like clock work. I’m ok with it, my ship will come in someday. Sleestaks are amazing and I love them.

Nope that’s Gay Ellis, which the book gets right half the time. There is also three versions of this portrait in the book.

And thank goodness, wouldn’t want to colour something interesting.

They look more like me getting off the couch than running.

Ok Colouring book, this is lazy, even for you. Not everyone on the moonbase is named Joan, that’s Nina. (trust me, I know my purple haired moongirls!)

Nope, certainly no flesh hunting aliens looking to harvest your organs. Move on….

This book seems to not realize who the bad guys are, the aliens are called “Astronauts” and so are the actual astronauts.

The book features a lot of drawings of the lunar module in space, they always call it a submarine. Submarines are spaceships now. The book never shows the real submarine.

I don’t know if it shows but I seriously adore this book, it’s awesome.

Presenting the coolest cross ever toy I’ve seen in a long time, normally I am immune to spaceship models (cause I suck at painting them) but this just broke my brain.

My love for Gerry Anderson’s UFO and Space:1999 could fill a warehouse and to find out IMAI of Japan added the Eagle to their popular UFO Moonbase model series series is something I simply can’t ignore.

The Moonbase kits are actually more like toys, sections of SHADO moonbase filled with all the vehicles from the series, even the earth based ones!

The Eagle is totally out of scale but so welcome.

The kit is the same Space:1999 one I put together (badly) in the 1980s though, save for one little detail.

In the early 1980s, ITC Entertainment took their back catalog of (mainly) Gerry Anderson TV programs and edited them into a series of Television movies for the growing Cable TV market. 

Dubbed “Super Space Theatre” these 14 movies were culled together from episodes of “Space:1999“, “UFO“, “Thunderbirds“, “Stingray“, “Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons” and the non Anderson property “The Champions” into new properties.

This package of (sometimes curiously edited) films was highly influential on yours truly, I ruined my sleep pattern trying to watch all of these as a ten year old and in turn, started to seek out merchandise based on these forgotten shows.


 This site owes a great debt to the wonderful recycling of Super Space Theater, so this sales kit containing sell sheets for all the films is truly a grail for me . I’ve also included some photos of my collection of SST VHS tapes.

Like a lot of these stories, it’s told in a lengthy flash back. I’ll spare you the many pages of Herb in a therapists office (what a joy to colour!) and go to the story.

Note the alien’s uniforms, they bugged me but i figured out why.

The aliens have bases under the water and plan to invade?

Nope it’s a friendly invasion? So like the British Invasion, lucky for me this isn’t resolved. The aliens show Herb around then make him leave, I’m pretty sure Herb is leaving out the hours of probing.

And like all of the stories in here, the Aliens are mysterious, largely malevolent and often a force for good. Nobody gets killed and it’s really low on the death ray quotient. Probably why I never read these as a kid but something bugged me about this story and i realized why.

Look familiar? It’s a scene from Canada’s incredible sci fi opus “Starship Invasions“. The lead bad guys have underwater bases and wear Winged Serpents on their shirts.  Invasions came out a year before this book, so I’m assuming that it influenced it somewhat. Frankly, the colouring book wins…..

UPDATE: I’ve been told that the Winged Serpent stories are based on eye witness accounts from the 1960s and Starship Invasions based the designs on that. The fact that this movie did research seems less plausible than the UFO accounts but I digress as I know nothing of UFO culture.

• The Gerry Anderson Memorabilia Guide is out of print but a must have.
• The After School Special Into Infinity borrowed sets and cast members from Space:1999 
• The German/UK co-produced series Star Maidens also feels like a low budget episode of Space:1999.
• This figure of Gay Ellis by Product Enterprise was in Brain’s top five favorites.
• The guys are lukewarm to the Terrahawks but both agree the ships look really cool.
