Toy-Ventures 11

It is with cathartic pleasure that I announce that issue 11 of Toy-Ventures is at the press stage, I’m reviewing the first round draft right now.
While it is late, I prefer to think of it as “slow cooked,” and I feel it’s some of the best stuff we’ve ever put out. Tonka’s Steel Monsters is our main feature and that was daunting because I learned as I went. I had no foundation for this guide but I wanted it to be all encompassing.

Fortunately, I have a lot of awesome friends who hooked me up with former designers, shared their collection and their expertise. This truly was a group effort and I was just the foreman, sincerely grateful.
My regular contributors knocked it out of the park with an eclectic mix of stories, art and eye popping stuff. Also, we’ve got a new comer who delivered something absolutely special that I’ll talk about soon.
Anyway, I want to thank everyone for their patience, I hope you enjoy this one, it was daunting but so very fun and rewarding.

Do I need to explain who Barbara is mimicking? I didn’t think so. Barbie was sold by rival Mexican toymaker Cipsa during this period.

Hello All,

I’m happy to share a sneak preview of Toy-Ventures magazine issue 8. Due in October, this issue will showcase the new direction for the magazine but will also retain the flavour you’ve come to expect from TV.

Toy-Ventures Issue 8 will contain the most vintage toy articles we’ve ever attempted, covering genres from the 1960s to the 1980s, like Military toys, Monsters, unproduced prototypes, Anime, Science Fiction, Knock-Offs, and Halloween costumes.

Our Mego Planet of the Apes coverage continues, as does Steve Stovall’s (3DSuperJoes) incredibly well-researched look at Hasbro’s Super Joe. Also returning to issue 8 is toy historian Tony Roberts (Analog Toys) with another fantastic look behind the curtain at the creation of a legendary Palitoy collectible.

New voices to Toy-Ventures this month include Heath Smith, Raymond Castile, Chance Priest, Dave Keymount and George Spigot, sharing their vast knowledge on unique subjects that I can’t wait to reveal.

I love this amazing UK comic ad for Palitoy Commander Power. In 1978, Palitoy who were still selling 12″ GI Joe under the Action Man banner (and doing ver well) took Hasbro’s latest incarnation of Joe, now called Super Joe, and rebranded it as Commander Power.

Three figures from the US line were brought over, Super Joe, The Shield, and Gor: King of the Terrons. Funny enough, the Terron itself was rebranded “Gargon” and wisely sold as a nemesis to the Action Man Space Ranger figures. So I guess Gor was king of nothing in the UK?

Like all Palitoy products, the packaging was improved upon with wonderful art and a comic story on the back.

Palitoy Commander Power ran for two years and was not a big hit for the company. The Super Joe concept faded in the US by 1978 and Hasbro wouldn’t return to action figures in a meaningful way until 1982.
