Amazing Bullmark Mecha Godzilla store display (sponsored link) ––

I’ve never seen these toys before but I wish I had seen them as a kid. That’s probably my favourite Godzilla movie of all time, and well, I like clear toys.

MASH Latrine Playset by Zee Toys (Sponsored Link) ––

So yeah, they made the toilets from MASH as a toy, a playset of sorts. You can set up the army man and well, make fart sounds all afternoon. When you factor in that this was aimed at boys in the third grade, you realize the people at Zee Toys may not have been stupid.

As a former 8-year-old boy, this would have been at least a fun afternoon.

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it, but I’m awfully fond of this whole Planet of the Apes nonsense the kids are into. I really like the oddball items, probably because I’ve forbidden myself to buy them.  Although I’d look pretty bad ass in this.

These things were like currency when I was kid, my parents weren’t drinkers so getting these was rare. As a kid, they were the perfect scale for Mego figures and hey, who didn’t want swords for your action figures?

Battle of the Planets Target Set (Sponsored Link) 

While I’ve seen the box for this thing before, I never realized how cool the toy is. The box is that same Sandy Frank licensing shot we’ve seen before but the target set itself is of Zoltar!

Zoltar, that amazing gender bending Glam rock villain didn’t get onto a lot of merchandise and we must celebrate it.

For those not in the know, these were Popy Japan’s attempts to create another line in scale with Kenner Star Wars (which they also sold in Japan), using Japanese heroes like Ultraman, Kamen Rider, and the 5 Man series.

I got heavily into these about a decade back. It was a really positive experience working with other collectors to buy lots. I wish there were more for me to collect.

Japanese Superman figure (eBay Affiliate Link) ––

I believe the word for such an item is “Keshi,” which means “Rubber Eraser” in Japanese. I would also consider the figures made by Diener US  as technically Keshi as well. What strikes me about this piece is the Neal Adams art on the box and the fun mix of characters. As a kid, I always flipped out if I saw Aquaman on something.

Six Million Dollar Man Play Suit (eBay Affiliate Link) —

This playsuit has been making me giggle for days, but I couldn’t figure out why.  It reminds me of how my friends and I would run in slow motion while pretending to be bionic. So I’m not laughing at the kid on the box, I AM the kid on the box at least metaphorically.  Also, now I just run in slow motion.

I’m going to guess that every kid who had one of these (a) pretended they were lightsabers and (b) somehow hurt their eye.

Sesame Street Bert and Ernie Radio (eBay Affiliate Link) —

I’m very pro “Bert and Ernie” items in this column, and that’s good because it seems to be a total bottomless pit of merchandise! George Lucas should kiss Bert’s ring which I imagine looks like a Bottlecap/Pigeon hybrid of some sort. I’ve thought too much about this.

Mini Godaikin- Shogun Warriors Leoparden BANDAI

This little guy magically arrived yesterday and it became my first toy opening of 2024.

Behold the mini Godaiken of Leopardon, the giant robot from the Amazing Japanese television adaptation of Spider-Man. These appeared when I was in high school, and I immediately recognized them as Shogun Warriors. Shoguns were an unrequited toy love of my childhood, meaning I never got many but adored the comic. So, I bought a bunch throughout high school.

Shogun Warriors- Mattel Diecast

Leopardon got special meaning in the 80s when I got a bootleg tape of the Japanese Spider-Man series (I was the “bootleg tape” guy in high school/college/now) and it was like knowing an incredible secret.

I remember finding this exact figure in 1991 at a Toys R Us store outside of Toronto and immediately buying it. Sadly, all of them were lost to time, and these figures went from sitting gathering dust at Toys R Us to just OUTRIGHT disappearing.

Seriously, I’m always on the hunt; I’ve found 2 of these things, and that’s it. The bubbles are likely the most significant issue; they are “rack toy”, although the figure is still high quality.

Happy 2024, everyone; let’s fill it with good stories.

Marchon Action Heroes Transport (eBay Link) —

This  Super Powers Knock-Off toy came out when I was in the ninth grade, and I HAD TO HAVE IT, which was weird for me, at least at that time. I think it was the packaging, which truly reminds me of Mego Superheroes artwork, is the trigger here. It still works; I almost bought this because it was on sale.I mean just look at those generic supervillains.

Denys Fisher Planet of the Apes copycast set (eBay Link) —

I’m pretty sure Planet of the Apes broke some sort of weird record with the number of plaster products they licensed. It seems like there are endless sets produced by multiple companies. This one, which sold in the UK is my favourite of all. 

Chef Boyardee Party Pizza Oven (eBay Link) —

File this under “I didn’t know this was a thing” for me. I had no idea that they marketed my favourite celebrity chef like this. I was RAISED on Chef Boyardee, although the pizza never grabbed me as a kid. As an adult, I crave it but it no longer exists here. I wonder if the promised mix is still good in this one.

Popy World Heroes Ultraman carry care (eBay Link)—

I’ve done a lot of posts extolling the virtues of the Popy World Heroes, the amazing 3 3/4″ line aping Kenner Star Wars. I think the greatest things are these carry cases, which include an ejector feature. It’s really difficult to make a carry case cool, they are bottom rung as a birthday gift, so well done Popy.

DFC Fires of Shandarr Playset (eBay Link) —

I am not much of a fantasy fan, but the sheer brilliance of the sets that DFC put out clearly shows there was a fan in charge It’s got some real love in the mix. I At the very least, somebody at least saw the Hobbit on TV and paid attention.

Popy Gorenger Challenge Machine (eBay Link)  Popy scooped up the rights to Evel Knievel in the 1970s and decided to give him some friends. Popy released Evel, Kamen Rider and this dude Gorenger and well, they’re pretty darn amazing toys. This very set was featured in Issue 3 of Toy-Ventures magazine.

Space:1999 Promotional Booklet for Season 2 (eBay Link)-   This wonderful (and huge) full-colour booklet was given out to TV networks and I assume the press to promote the exciting second season of Space:1999. I have no valid reason to own this but baby wants it now.

Clash of the Titans Retail Booklet (eBay Link) This booklet was meant for retailers who had chosen to carry Clash of the Titans merchandise. It’s loaded with info about the various items (The Mattel figures are in there) and promotions surrounding this movie. Man, I remember being ten when this came out thinking it was going to be the next Star Wars.

AHI Lost in Space Robot (eBay Link) After the success of merchandising Star Trek and Space:1999, AHI went after another UHF Sci-Fi staple, Lost in Space. The Lost in Space items are really hard to get and this robot is quite tempting.

Walton’s Farm House Playset by Amsco -I know it’s thanksgiving in the states, so what’s more “Thanksgivingsy” than the Waltons clan? Amsco made these killer playsets out of cardboard for Planet of the Apes, Space: 1999 and Marvel Comics but I figured if I had gotten one as a kid, it probably would have been this one.
