If there was anything that screamed “1979,” it’s this thing. We were so awash in weird X Wings and Tie Fighters at the time. I like this design better than most.

The Adventures of Metal-Man Flying Saucer (sponsored link) —

These Metal Man vehicle sets are an obsession of mine (I put the video below), and this, to me, is the best set they made. Radon and his Flying Saucer is my favourite, and this set even still have the dome the figure is in. Someday, I will own one of those domes…..

Japanese Popeye Model Kit (sponsored link) —

Now Popeye is no stranger to merchandise, but a model kit is a new one for me, especially from Japan! It’s motorized because Japanese kids enjoy building their own toys. What a nice pallet cleanser for the week!

It’s gum! It’s a toy! It’s Play pal! We run an article about these and Chewgum Warriors in Toy-Ventures issue 7. I don’t think that gum is still good, it would probably mess people up.

Message from Space Sticker Album (sponsored link) —

So this sticker book is based off the “Message from Space” TV Spin Off “Galactic Wars: which did get syndicated to other countries and spawning merch. When I was in the 6th grade, a kid from my class went to South America and brought back tons of these cards. They blew my mind. I’d seen “Message from Space,” but there were Apes and other aliens on these cards, nowhere to be seen in the movie. I actually bought the cards from him and still have a couple. It’s so cool to see the booklet finally.

Also, there was a dubbed compilation movie called “Sword of the Space Ark” or “Space Ninjas”. If you have a copy, please get in touch with me as I would really like to watch it.

5 Awesome Things on eBay this week-Parachuting Captain Harlock, Kid Acero, generic space vehicles, Steel Monsters and Dr. Zauis Bubbles.

Captain Harlock parachuting rack toy figure (eBay Affiliate Link)

Captain Harlock is a Japanese Television series that also gained a following in France and Quebec, Canada as “Albator.” I used to watch this show despite not being able to understand it as a kid because it looked like Star Blazers to me. I’ve never warmed to watching it in English but I still have a weakness for the character, he’s got a cool design and well this is also a parachuting rack toy, something I have a history with.

Planet Surface Patrol vehicle (eBay Affiliate Link) —

It’s amazing the power “Generic Sci-Fi Vehicle” can have on a growing mind. I look at this thing, and I see a cross between Space1999’s Eagle and Damnation Alley’s Landmaster, which makes for a stunning baby. Also, “Planet Surface Patrol” sounds like a 60s Japanese kid’s show that I’d think about a lot.

Tonka Steel Monsters Punk Prototype Sculpt (eBay Affiliate Link) –

I spent a lot of 2023 researching the Tonka Steel Monsters for Toy-Ventures magazine. So, I was gobsmacked to see these original sculpts for second series figures Punk and Viking appear.

They’re really cool but meant for a fan much bigger than me, although it is very tempting.

Cipsa Kid Acero Lobo Laser (eBay Affiliate Link) —

This is the Mexican version of the Laservetter from Big Jim’s Wolf P.A.C.K and while it’s pretty much the same box with different logos, I really want it. Mexican Big Jim or Kid Acero is, to me, the greatest toy line I never had as a kid. Normally ,the toy company Cipsa would redraw the characters on the boxes but, for some reason, kept the two US figures that they didn’t offer. I assume that confused Mexican kids…

Dr. Zauis Bubble Bottle (eBay Affiliate Link) —

Silly throw-away esoterica that I wouldn’t have missed as a kid, but I would love it on my shelf now. It’s funny how that works.

Mego Meet 2024 will be hosted this August 17-18 at Zolo-Con. We’ll have our own dealer area, panels, customs contests for the kids and late night swap meets in the Mego Suite.

Planet of the Apes Motion Lamp (eBay Affiliate Link) –

I am fond of Motion lamps and own a whole bunch in my rumpus room. The combination of Apes to this mixture is so tempting it give me goosebumps.

Buck Rogers Rack Toys by Fleetwood (eBay Affiliate Link)-–

Not only are these toys cool and iconic but a great deal. The licensing agent for Buck Rogers has been described to me by toy executives at the time as a “Great Guy.” I will also say, he was a heck of a sales man, there is so much stuff!

Dakin Olive Oyl (eBay Affiliate Link) —

I’m not sure if I’ve ever noticed these before but being a life long fan of Popeye, this is a brilliant toy.

Japanese Spider-Man Colouring Book (eBay Affiliate Link) —

I love the Bananas Japanese Spider-Man tv series and to see this vintage colouring book? I want it so bad. I also like that the kid was so neat!

ChemToy Jaws toy (eBay Affiliate Link) —

Just like King Kong, Jaws toys faced stiff competition from everyone else who happened to make a toy of the animal it was based on. However, there is something so special about that Jaws sticker.

1974 Chemtoy Catalog

Chemtoy was one of America’s premiere producer of lower cost novelties and Rack Toys during the 60s and 70s.

Their offering for 1974 was a fun mix of generic staples like bubbles, paddle balls, toy guns that you can still find to this day.

On the licensing side they had everything from Batman to the Groovie Goolies, it’s good group of old friends.

Another one of those products where, once you detach them from the card, they have no real connection to the characters after.

I do love the Batman card though, it looks like Robin is fed up with Batman’s need to run with them.

The Day the Scary Creatures Took Over the World

I wanted to save this until Halloween but I just can’t wait the 7 months to show this off. This is one of the greatest 70s Rack Toy displays I’ve ever seen, mostly because it looks like an amalgam of every single “movie for a Sunday afternoon” that scared the living crap out of me as a kid.

I will not rest until it is mine.
