Filmation’s “Tarzan and the Super 7” Saturday Morning series with its homespun superheroes left a mark on me that won’t go away. 

Web Woman was my favourite of the lot, but I liked all the shows and still do. This is a cool item that I proudly own and got my daughter to model many moons ago.

Shindana Marla Gibbs Doll (sponsored link) —

Shindana was a Los Angeles-based toy company that focused on people of colour and had a great deal of success for a few years. They licensed Jimmy Walker, Redd Foxx and Dr. J just to name a few. Marla Gibbs’s sassy maid Florence was the breakout character from “the Jeffersons” so Shindana shored up her likeness rights.

I wonder if in an alternative universe, children don’t play with Superheroes, but with Sitcom Housekeepers. Imagine the lineup of figures, Mr. French, Uncle Charlie, Alice and the GOAT Mr. Belvedere! 

Colin Baker Era Doctor Who Daleks Puzzle (sponsored link) 

The Colin Baker era of Doctor Who is where I took my first of many breaks watching the show. It was too loud, too camp and too gruesome for me. I wasn’t mad about it, I just spent my time looking for new series to enjoy and found them. I eventually wandered back during the McCoy years, where it ultimately roped me back into the series.

Having said all that, I think this is one of the best bits of merch from the JNT era; it’s a gorgeous puzzle with great art. Additionally, I later on briefly met Colin Baker in an elevator, and he was a really likable guy. 

Arco the Other World Gift Set (sponsored link) —

The Other World came out in the post-MOTU toy scene and was one of the more imaginative copycats. All of the characters are bendable and have an adorable design quality to them. I remember being smitten with the line at Woolco back in ’84, but I’ve never collected them.

The Archies Snare Drum (sponsored link) —

Despite his longevity at the checkout aisle, Archie has never really had a lot of hit toys. This snare drum is something likely inspired by the Filmation cartoon at the time, and the box is spectacular.

Issue #13 of Toy-Ventures Magazine will feature the never-before-seen plans for the 1983 World’s Greatest Superheroes toy line and a cover featuring artwork specially commissioned for Mego’s catalogue, gloriously coloured by Robyn Adams, founder of the Mego Museum.

5 Awesome Things on eBay this week- Borgnine Stamps, Giant Scorpions, Wonder Woman, The Hulk, Archie and LOOK INTO MY EYES BROTHER MAN!

Wonder Woman Mitts (affiliate link) —

Wonder Woman merchandise will always remind me of the “only towel left in stock” in Florida when i was a kid.  I also find it weird that 70s merchandise still used 40s art. Perhaps it was an aesthetic choice.

Gigantics Giant Scorpion Model Kit (affiliate Link) —

God I love these amazing mid-70s kits which came out at a time when we got giant bug movies again (although not super great ones.) I’ve bought these over the years but I’m never going actually to put one together. They do rock, though.

Mattel Archies Huggables (affiliate link) —

Huggables was one of two attempts to make Archie toys in the 1970s, the first one was by Marx. Marx also made the carry case in this lot. I’ve never understand why Archie didn’t translate to toy sales, he’s so well known. There were periods of my childhood where I would have killed for toys from Riverdale but not the CW Riverdale, those would have to be done by McFarlane.

Corgi Incredible Hulk Tricycle (Affiliate Link) —

Finally, a believable Hulk vehicle! I chose this for the striking card art; I don’t know why, but a lot of UK companies chose Orange for the Hulk packaging, and they were so right! He pops right out of there, doesn’t he?

Black Velvet Hulk Hogan (affiliate link)—

My friend Courtney sent me this, and I struggled with posting it. I am no fan of Wrestling, and my opinion of the “Hulkster” isn’t super good, but I don’t want to poop on anybody’s childhood here.

However, this work of art haunts me; the expression, those eyes and the little details, like his famous “Plus sign” necklace, make me want this on my mantle. I’d have to get a mantle, but I’m considering it.

The painting also controls me now, I need a jet ski…and a time share condo in Tampa..yes… master/brother man….I obey….

Remco did a whole page on these guys in ’85 but the comics these guys were based on in the “Archie Adventure Series” would cease publication by September of that year. Best I can tell a small amount of these toys were produced and sold at clearance.


I’ve had luck over the past 17 years of looking to find a tiny handful of these items so I honestly believe they all  got made.


 

It’s interesting that the Shield parachutist is pictured here but not the Web, I know that one got made. The Web and the villian The Sting are the only characters I’ve ever seen physical merchandise of. I still think the Shield stuff got made however.

I’ve never seen the walkie talkies but another collector has confirmed the water pistols and I have the Web Stunt Cycle, so the Sting bike is out there. Note the use of the Fox and Brain Emperor on the walkie talkies.

There is no greater time in a toy collector’s journey then when they find that something that they thought existed, actually does.

Well I guess, finding it for a dollar would trump that but no such luck here. After decades of searching I have found my white whale, the very last produced Parachutist figures by Remco/AHI, The Mighty Crusaders.

I present you with the Web parachutist figure, as you can see he’s “Good”, which likely means they also made the “Evil” character which seems to be the Sting.

While the Shield is on the package, the only Remco/AHI Rack Toys I have ever found feature the Web or the Sting. There is a Web/Sting Helicopter set, both Motorcycles are known to exist (mine is pictured below) and I know someone who has the Sting water gun.

The figure itself is the standard AHI parachute figure we knew and love for the 70s and early 80s.

I think it’s fair to say that most of the Mighty Crusaders Rack Toys pictured on the back of the card got made albeit in miniscule quantities.

The back of this card features a price sticker from Sears which surprises me, I would have thought they were something only found in discount chains.

I’m always excited to find something I didn’t know existed because that just means there is a possibility more toys exist, just waiting to be found.

It’s been a while since I’ve found a Rack Toy that excites me (that sounds weird) but this week I totally have. These toys come from Remco/AHI and are as I can figure, the last line of these kind of licensed affairs that AHI was so known for in the 70s and 80s. 


Mighty Crusaders are a superhero team owned by Archie Comics, they have a great lineage but an awfully sporadic publishing history since the Golden Age. During the early 80s, they had a pretty decent attempt at a revival which spawned licensed toys from Remco.


While the Remco Mighty Crusaders action figure line is fairly commonly found, these toys must have been produced in much lower numbers.  I’m still not positive what got made and didn’t . 



Prior to this discovery, the only Rack Toys for the Mighty Crusaders I could confirm were these helicopters.

The back of the package suggests that Mighty Crusaders got the same treatment that Batman and Planet of the Apes did in the mid seventies with helicopters, Motorcycles and (gasp!) Parachute figures. (If you have one please email me, even if it’s not for sale!)

A really nice shot of “The Web” figure, I’m glad that I keep running into one of my favourite characters when I do find this stuff.

• Lou Scheimer: Creating the Filmation Generation is a must for any fan of their shows. Seriously, it’s a terrific book.
• Filmation’s Dick Tracy cartoon is largely forgotten which is a shame because it’s more faithful than the better known 60’s version.
