I realized I haven’t documented completing the glow-in-the-dark trinity of Space Sword, Space Shield, and Space Trooper Helmet by Toy Box Inc.

Meant to cash in on Star Wars, these wonderful toys were somehow better than what Kenner offered in terms of lightsabers.

I had the shield and sword as a kid (via @canadiantire), and they were the best, but I never got that helmet. My pal @peterjoek gifted me one this fall, and well, it’s about time I showed them off!

Mattel Tarzan figure set (Sponsored Link) —

I think this may be one of my favourite ’70s figure sets ever. I mean that sincerely. I grew up with Big Jim, and the Filmation Tarzan cartoon is still a passion of mine. To get my set, I had to negotiate with my long-time friend Mark until 3 a.m in a crappy Toronto airport hotel. Sometimes, the stories become intertwined with the toy, and that’s why we collect.

Our best-selling items this year are the Star Wars characters, the Shogun [Warriors] and the Micronauts. Of course, we expect something big like this every year, and it’s a good guess that next year we’ll be looking at something coming from a movie like Close En­counters . . . maybe a man from outer space or a flying saucer of some kind.

Along with Star Wars’ toys, Ken­ner’s Fuzzy Pumper was popular. And I don’t want to forget Chutes Away and Mr. Quarterback for as long as we had them in stock. Other good items are the electronic gad­gets, Baby Come Back, comput­erized football and road race sets. The price of these items (some more than $25) has not been a fac­tor. Customers would pay anything for them, especially during the last four weeks of the year.

We aren’t promoting anything special. We categorize items throughout our store and the average shopper (usually a woman) will buy according to age, whether its dolls or sporting goods. Our #1 items are TV-advertised merchandise. ­We advertise heavily on radio and TV during the fourth quarter of the year and average two newspaper ­ads each week. We also run four­magazine-type ads each year as newspaper supplements.

Business in general? Probably the same as last year: pretty good. This year, however, shoppers seemed to put off their Christmas shopping until the last minute. I guess the economy and lack of funds have some impact. Because of the late shopping trend, some essential items were gone. But customers didn’t seem to mind. They came in to buy and switched to some­thing else when we didn’t have what they were looking for.

If you ever want to see the actual cultural impact of May 4th, 1977, look no further than any toy industry magazine about 6-24 months later. There you will find spaceships, ray guns, action figures and a new one, swords. Yes, the trades are littered with blades with competing gimmicks, such as lights or glow-in-the-dark. Never will you see the word sabre, but they’re fooling nobody. Let’s go through a few shall we?

Meet the Star Force Ray; I remember an infomercial where they interviewed the creator of this. He said he created it in a department store by adding a golf tube and a flashlight. He then slapped a familiar font on it and called it a day. He likely made a fortune.

In the UK, they had the much more aggressive bootleg “The Force Beam” a hot seller there and no wonder! Look at the ads they’d run for it.

I like to picture George Lucas seeing this and then blowing into this big Conch Shell and summoning his legal team. This is Bootleg Star Wars at it’s most brazen. Although I still think the toy is better than the actual Kenner product.

But my absolute favourite is the Star Sword and Space Shield by Toybox Inc., Mainly because I had both as a kid/adult but also because they embrace the best of Bootleg Star Wars. Yes, they’re supposed to be Star Wars toys, but they’re well made; they’re highly creative and enjoyable. Trust me on that one, fan for life.

Sonic Fazer ad from 1979

While generally considered a Star Wars Knock-Off, if “Luke Solo” above wasn’t enough of a clue, the Kusan Sonic Fazer is one of those toys that’s better than Kenner’s official products. (that prize also goes to Milton Bradley’s Star Bird) While the Kenner blasters sounded like my blender when I put in too many frozen cranberries, the Kusan Sonic Fazer had all the bells and whistles.

It offered kids five sounds with cool names like “Ion Transport” and “Radiate.” However, the best feature was voice amplification, yup, it was a bullhorn. This kind of tech is commonplace now but in the late 70s, it was state of the art. Kusan smartly had “Try Me” sections at toy store and what kid could resist that? Not me. I remember playing with the Sonic Fazer every time I visited the Hudson’s Bay store. It was near the Fisher Price movie viewer which always had “The Black Hole” so that was my second stop.

It also didn’t hurt that the gun strongly resembled the pistols used in “Battlestar Galactica”. Which is a good thing because the “official” Battlestar Galactica gun from Mattel was just a label slapped ray gun from Taiwan.

If you were a kid under ten in the late seventies, you witnessed one of the toy industry’s biggest game changers, the Kenner Star Wars line. Even though it was late for Christmas of ’77, Kenner came out with both barrels blazing the following year, utilizing their master toy license to the maximum with pages of product that made my seven-year-old heart flutter.

Even though I’m what you consider a SW dabbler at best, even I can’t resist that wonderful counter display. SWOON!

In my memory, that vinyl-caped Jawa came later but the catalogue disagrees with me. I remember seeing it and thinking it was a cop-out compared to mine. Tusken Raider and Death Squad Commander are two of my favourite figures, although I admit they were odd choices for an opening wave.

Any of these merchandisers full of products could likely put a kid through college, maybe not graduate school though.

The Landspeeder was really innovative and one of my favourites, it really looked like it was floating if you squinted, the droids always fell off the back but who cared?

The real reason Kenner made the figures 3 3/4″ was to sell us kids higher price point vehicles, what can I say other than “Thank You, Kenner”! I had pretty much every vehicle of this first wave, the primitive light and sound seemed really high-tech back then but wouldn’t even be found on a dollar store toy today.

I got the tie fighter for my eighth birthday, and my mom marched me down to the local ShopRite to get it, I remember they had the Comic Action Heroes Batmobiles on clearance and I almost waffled. I then proceeded to completely screw up the stickers on this thing ( I still suck at that!) which bothered me for the next four years.

Diecast vehicles were something every kid had to have, even though you had the larger versions.

I’m perplexed why they made Luke’s sabre yellow, the colour it’s never been.

Possibly one of the most overused toys in my room, the Death Star pretty much captivated me as a kid with its levels, trap doors, elevator and wonderful, wonderful trash compacter. Which is the only thing that survived my childhood. It may have been my favourite because I never really had a playset before, I don’t know but man was I hooked on them after this, it carried onto my adulthood and ate up most of my space.

Han and Chewie look seriously screwed in that picture, Vader is on top of them Saber drawn and they’re stuck in a doorway like the Three Stooges..

Kenner did a little label slap with a six-million-dollar man head set here.

Kenner also offered a 12″ line that wasn’t as popular as the 3 3/4″ figures, the big selling point to Leia was that girls could do her hair. Also, is calling her hair-do “Star Puffs” canon? 

That’s not Chewbacca, it’s a Big foot from the Six Million Dollar Man line of toys taking is place. That is so awesome.

Remote-controlled R2 D2 broke, I swear by January in my house and ended up being a fill-in for the 12″ figure.

1979 Toys R Us Catalog- Mork and Mindy

From our video this week, here is the 1979 Toys R Us Catalog in it’s full-colour glory. This wonderful time warp of a publication really encapsulates the late 1970s toy and pop culture crazes. Starting of course with Mork Mania, the popularity of “Mork and Mindy” spawned some really fun merchandise from Mattel and others. I had that Mork doll with the (recycled Big Jim) back pack as a kid. Mork came boxed upside down, which was clever for the time.

Mego‘s 2-XL cost $50 back then but was a surprise hit for the world’s greatest toy company.

This is probably my favourite page in this Toys R Us Catalog, it’s got a lot of stuff I drooled over. Mego Superman, Kenner Alien, Mego Micronauts and the Elastic Hulk? I’ll take ten of each. I really want an adult version of those Hulk muscles for the beach this year.

That Big Bird chair is freaking me out.

I don’t ever want to play “Snoopy’s Pound-A-Ball” if it’s anything like when my dog jumps in my lap.

The ABC football game had the real voice of Howard Cossel, for ten bucks more you could get it without his voice.

That Spider-Man bike is awesome sauce.

I am not familiar with that Matchbox Spider-Man Race track. Speed Burners was Mego‘s attempt to get some Hot Wheels action. The radio-controlled Hulk Mobile is by one of our favourite toy companies here, Azrak-Hamway.

Those pyjamas really show that in 1979, if they made it, they slapped the Incredible Hulk on it.

Remco’s Reggie Jackson Bat Away was a big seller for the company.

Star Cruiser 1 was supposed to be a network TV spin-off of Space:1999 that never got off the ground. The model, however, sold for years after. The Superheroes Fiddlesticks set is a regular subject of emails here, people can never remember its name.

SSP stood for “Super Sonic Power” and it was one of Kenner’s flagship brands in the 1970s, mostly because of the popularity of “Smash-Up Derby” a toy that combined boys love of cars with their desire to wreck stuff (Genius).

1978 saw a lot of goodness with the introduction of Monsters, Vans and Star Wars to the line, such a cool brew of fun.

Kenner’s SSP Star Wars vans were a great example of a label slap, where you decal an existing toy with a license. This was probably due to Kenner wanting to get as much Star Wars merch out as possible at the time. The Drag Race of the Galaxy set does look pretty bad ass. I wonder if anybody has a real van that looks like these? That has to exist right?

Kenner SSP Smash Up Derby was an ever-green toy for the company, these junk yard cars got redecorated every so often but were insanely popular when I was growing up. Heck, I had a set, which wasn’t much fun when you don’t have a sibling close in age.

Aw yeah, the 1970s were ALL ABOUT Van culture, which I sorely miss. These things look amazing, I especially love the Jaws-inspired shark.

These Monster SSP cars are amazing, each came with a T-Shirt Iron-On too, just because it was 1978. I don’t collect cars but I’d love that Frankenstein and excuse but doesn’t the Gargoyle look like a certain someone from the black lagoon?
