Jumbo Machinders Return!

With the announcement that Bandai is releasing the Jumbo Machinder line starting with Mazinger-Z, I just had to dig up this early 1970s toy flyer with the toys themselves. This page, with its Henshin Cyborg, diecasts, and Microman, is somewhat overwhelming to take in.

We 70s kids, of course, know Machinders as “Shogun Warriors,” but their original name is just as good to me!

This video from Japan showcases the 50th Anniversary Machinder Mazinger Z, and as much as I still have the one I bought at a yard sale in 1982, I may need to get this.

Mazinger was one of the first Shogun Warriors to “invade” our pop culture and became iconic as a result.

I’m really excited for future releases from this series, I’ve always wanted a Kamen Rider V-3, fingers crossed for that one.

Mini Godaikin Spider-Man Leopardon by Bandai

Mini Godaikin- Shogun Warriors Leoparden BANDAI

This little guy magically arrived yesterday and it became my first toy opening of 2024.

Behold the mini Godaiken of Leopardon, the giant robot from the Amazing Japanese television adaptation of Spider-Man. These appeared when I was in high school, and I immediately recognized them as Shogun Warriors. Shoguns were an unrequited toy love of my childhood, meaning I never got many but adored the comic. So, I bought a bunch throughout high school.

Leopardon got special meaning in the 80s when I got a bootleg tape of the Japanese Spider-Man series (I was the “bootleg tape” guy in high school/college/now) and it was like knowing an incredible secret.

I remember finding this exact figure in 1991 at a Toys R Us store outside of Toronto and immediately buying it. Sadly, all of them were lost to time, and these figures went from sitting gathering dust at Toys R Us to just OUTRIGHT disappearing.

Seriously, I’m always on the hunt; I’ve found 2 of these things, and that’s it. The bubbles are likely the most significant issue; they are “rack toy”, although the figure is still high quality.

Happy 2024, everyone; let’s fill it with good stories.

Ever wonder what was selling in 1978? Probably not, but here is Gary (seen below holding a Micronauts Astro Station and Shogun Warriors Dragun), a manager at Bradberry in Decatur IL, explaining the hot-selling toys for 1978.

Our best-selling items this year are the Star Wars characters, the Shogun [Warriors] and the Micronauts. Of course, we expect something big like this every year, and it’s a good guess that next year we’ll be looking at something coming from a movie like Close Encounters . . . maybe a man from outer space or a flying saucer of some kind.

Along with Star Wars’ toys, Kenner’s Fuzzy Pumper was popular. And I don’t want to forget Chutes Away and Mr. Quarterback for as long as we had them in stock. Other good items are the electronic gadgets, Baby Come Back, computerized football and road race sets. The price of these items (some more than $25) has not been a factor. Customers would pay anything for them, especially during the last four weeks of the year.

We aren’t promoting anything special. We categorize items throughout our store and the average shopper (usually a woman) will buy according to age, whether its dolls or sporting goods. Our #1 items are TV-advertised merchandise. We advertise heavily on radio and TV during the fourth quarter of the year and average two newspaper ads each week. We also run fourmagazine-type ads each year as newspaper supplements.

Business in general? Probably the same as last year: pretty good. This year, however, shoppers seemed to put off their Christmas shopping until the last minute. I guess the economy and lack of funds have some impact. Because of the late shopping trend, some essential items were gone. But customers didn’t seem to mind. They came in to buy and switched to something else when we didn’t have what they were looking for.

1979 Italian Mattel Shogun Warriors Catalog

Mattel sold the popular Shogun Warriors brand around the world and in Italy in 1979, it was simply known as “Shogun”.

The popular line even had the foresight to introduce cartoon characters popular in Italy at the time..

Goldrake was sold in Italy and in France (where he was called Goldorak) because the show played in French Canada, the figure saw limited release in the Quebec market as well. I’ve found more than one at toy shows here.

North American kids did get the diecast version from the collector range however.

One of my first “vintage toy deals” was trying to buy these Shoguns from a guy in grade 9, his idea of their value was a bit ahead of its time.

This is the only Battlestar Galactica piece in the ’79 Mattel italy catalog, maybe the show hadn’t been released yet? I don’t know..

1977 Mattel Shogun Warriors Catalog

1977 was the initial release year for the Mattel Shogun Warriors figures, unknown to us in North America these figures were called “Jumbo Machinders” in Japan and the characters were actually well-known cartoon characters. We’d get an inkling of this later when “Force Five” appeared in syndication.

Dragun would round out the first three figures, the next year the Warriors would bring out the Toho Monsters.
