Matchbox MAC Rescue Center (sponsored link) —
MAC was one of those toy lines that I got whenever someone gave me a bit of pocket money. You couldn’t beat getting a figure AND a vehicle for like $4.00. I never got anything on the level of this amazing playset, but I did own one in my late 20s. Guess what? It’s awesome.
Ninja Playset? (sponsored link) —
Now this is neither a playset nor a Ninja, it’s just a Rambo knock-off, which is probably a Sun Gold body in a Karate Gi.
The reason I post this is the thought process I went through after my friend sent it. This kind of hilarity is what fuels the Knock-Off collecting sphere. There is a wealth of comedy gold in poorly translated English. I mean, when I wrote Knock-Offs, I kept finding the phrase “Let’s Fence Against the Earth” on Superhero toys.
My thought was, what if AI and Google eventually put an end to this unintentional and welcome silliness? What if it reaches the point where everything is written in perfect English? Where will we go from there?
Colorforms King Kong Tru-Dimension 3D art kit (sponsored link)—
Tru-Dimension 3d art kits were the brainchild of Toy Inventor Mel Birnkrant, and he has a wonderful website showcasing the entire process. I don’t collect these, but the box art on all of them makes me want to. They are gorgeous, and sadly, they flopped at the time.
Haunted Castle Bagatelle (sponsored link) —
I really don’t have any backstory or era on this, but I love the artwork, which reminds me a lot of Don Bluth movies.
Mego Mice Hockey Board Game (sponsored link) —
Currently, I’m working with a friend on a website about board games produced by Mego Corp. During the 1970s, they attempted to diversify their product lines and released some wacky games. I’m not sure any of them were a hit but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be talked about. As a Mego fan and board game junkie/collector, even I don’t know much about these, so I’m learning as I go.
Issue #13 of Toy-Ventures Magazine will feature the never-before-seen plans for the 1983 World’s Greatest Superheroes toy line and a cover featuring artwork specially commissioned for Mego’s catalogue, gloriously coloured by Robyn Adams, founder of the Mego Museum.
Toy-Ventures is our magazine; we’re an independent publisher trying to bring back print toy magazines; if you would like to support us, please check out the latest issue: https://plaidstallions.com/reboot/shop

Ah MAC Men. I got my first two sets from a Montgomery Wards in Lafeyette IND. They were not in a box, just two of the fire trucks in plastic bags unmarked. I asked the guy how much were they, he said two bits each. I then asked him how much that was, he laughed, said a quarter each. I bought them both. Over the next couple of years I ended up with a small pontoon boat, a helicopter, a yellow small ambulance and huge rescue vehicle with a fold down ramp, ladder, twin bed compartment. Sadly they are all gone but the huge rescue vehicle and various bits of kit (oxygen tank, first aid kits etc) that my Micronauts took over.
