Glade Halloween Air Fresheners (eBay Link) —

Dracula, a man who represents dirty castle basements and has bats flying around, is an odd choice for an air freshener. However, I love Halloween and any attempt to bring movie monsters into my home.

GI Joe RAH Towel (eBay Link) —

GI Joe RAH was basically my “exit toyline” from childhood, I have a lot of fond memories of it but have been able to stave off nostalgia to not collect it. However, my love for the toys is eclipsed by that brilliant comic which I read long past buying the toys. That first issue has eery powers over me and seeing it on this towel makes me immediately want it.

Kenner Butch and Sundance figures in catalog mailer box (eBay Link) —

The engineers at Kenner gave this prequel the four-star treatment.  The figures, with their quick-draw action and ability to ride horses combined with winning playsets and accessories, were a joy. However, the movie flopped, and so did the toys, but who cares? They are gorgeous and deserve to be celebrated. It’s also interesting that actor William Katt got two action figures in less than five years.

I mean, the only thing missing from this is macrame and a fresh pot of Chicory brewing.

However, the more curious thing is the selection of toys for a 1978 catalog, a weird mix of stuff from 1977 and years earlier and a couple of glaring omissions.

The top toys here would be Pulsar and Electroman, and Zogg; both toys debuted in 1977 and were actively available so it’s no surprise to see them. The lack of Pulsar’s nemesis Hypnos is a bit strange but not the strangest thing in this toy catalog.

Six Million Dollar Man was kind of a fixture in toy catalogs even in it’s last year so that’s not surprising, Shindana’s Dr. J was also fairly current but Mego’s Muhammad Ali toys came out in 1976 and were discontinued by 1978.

Mego Micronauts were a hot toy in 1978, so it’s no surprise to see Biotron, although it’s weird he’s all alone. The Mattel Welcome Back Kotter series is another line that was discontinued by then. This deluxe classroom was likely a way of closing out unsold figures.

Both Evel Knievel and Fonzie were available but were in the last years of production. Most of these toys made their debut 2-4 years previously.

Finally, we have Stretch Monster (1977) and Stretch Armstrong (1976) which were staples of this kind of Service Merchandise/Consumers Distributing type store.

What’s interesting about this catalogue is what isn’t there, no Kenner Star Wars, No Mego Superheroes, No Mego KISS, Kenner Bionic Woman. It’s weird.

If you had a Monroe store in your area, please let me know what kind of store it was. Was it a closeout store? I need closure on this weird toy catalog.

Hasbro Flash Gordon Paint by Numbers (eBay Link)– I adore the Filmation Flash Gordon cartoon and any merchandise that came out from it is OK by me. This set is an underrated gem.

Mattel Welcome Back Kotter Playset (eBay Link)– “Sweathog Mania” is something I plan to address in a future Toy-Ventures episode but this toy has to be the absolute high point in the series merchandise. A gorgeous playset that really is more than the show deserves.

TJ Hooker Rack Toy (eBay Link)– HOOKER IS A GOOD COP! Anytime a cop show got beyond a single season, Rack Toy manufacturers jumped on it so they could sell handcuffs and guns. I’m honestly surprised there are no “Hill Street Blues” rack toys. The ring is kind of weird but also a fun touch.

Colorforms Outer Space Men set (eBay link)– I’ve probably featured this before but it’s just so cool. I wanted this set so bad but passed when i realized these amazing action figures were not in the box.

Kitty O’Neil Stunt Woman doll (eBay Link)– This doll is a real ground breaker, a fashion doll based on Kitty O’Neil, the pioneering, hearing impaired Stunt Women. This is a far cry from Barbie as O’Neil was known for driving fast cars and doubling for Wonder Woman and the Bionic Man. It’s nice to see this homage to someone who deserves it.

Knock-Offs: Totally Unauthorized Action Figures is the latest book from Brian Heiler, the creator of PlaidStallions and author of “Rack Toys: Cheap, Crazed Playthings”. It’s a love letter to bootleg toys and action figures.

5 Awesome Things on eBay this week

Martin Landau’s collection of Space:1999 toys– OK, I don’t what kind of pedigree you need but these are Martin Freaking Landau’s collection of Space:1999 toys. I have a book from Landau’s collection and it’s something I will always keep. I can’t tell you how cool it would be to own Commander Koenig’s Eagles but you probably knew that.

5 Awesome Things on eBay This Week- Denys Fisher Cyborg

Denys Fisher Cyborg Figure Lot– I totally adore Denys Fisher Cyborg and have done an episode on it recently. This lot is like an instant collection, where you get Cyborg, Muton and the hard to get Android! These are some of the coolest action figures of the 1970s and you need these.

Freddy Kruger Knock Off– I don’t know what it is about this thing, not a fan of Freddy Kruger merch but this looks like a cross between him and that little guy from “the Island of Dr. Moreau”. You know the guy I’m talking about right? I didn’t dream him?

Remco Batman Kite

Remco Batman Kite– In 1970, right after the Superhero craze, Remco made this weird series of Kites based on DC Comics characters including the short-lved powerless Wonder Woman. I honestly wasn’t sure if these things got made but here they are and this one is realistically priced.

Sweathogs Picture Puzzle- Sweathog Mania, I lived through it, many of us did and it burned brightly but not for a long time, leaving a trail of weird merchandise in it’s wake. What I really love about this piece is the obvious insertion of Gabe Kaplan, like he’s Gazoo or something. Man, he had some good lawyers….

The popularity of the sitcom “Welcome Back Kotter” inspired all kinds of merchandising including these 9″ figures from Mattel, the line was a bit of a flop, and carded figures can still be affordably priced today (especially the Horshak!)

The Sweathogs classroom playset included a record of catchphrases from the show, which I thought were hilarious in 1976. The Sweathog bike is a recycled Big Jim Motor Cross, you’d see Big Jim stuff reused up until the mid-eighties!
