The Classic Star Trek Toy Gallery

While most children of the ’70s recall the Star Trek merchandise explosion of the 1970s led by the Mego Corporation it’s surprising just how much merchandise the show generated when it actually was on the air. Much of these products are so rare that they almost seemed shrouded in mystery or misinformation,That’s why we’re lucky […]

The 2009 PlaidStallions Retro Awards

Yep, I’m doing an awards show, except without the musical numbers (this is a good thing if you’ve met me), stilted humour and most of all, Billy Crystal. Just thought that instead of talking vintage, I’d point out my favourite nerdy retro treats of the last year. Movies Star Trek: Oh hot damn did I […]

Triple Shot of Star Trek Model KIts

This amazing three pack of Star Trek model kits featuring The Enterprise (no clue as to why it’s silver), Shuttle Galeilo (A kit I ruined twice, thank you) and the incredibly awesome Mr Spock kit was only $8 back in 1974. I’m buying my son the Spock reissue this Christmas, I imagine it’ll cost me […]

1974 HG Toys Puzzle Catalog

HG Toys was one of the bigger producers of licensed products in the 1970s and this great puzzle catalog from 1974 proves this. Almost every popular television show or character from that time is present, including Evel Knievel, Star Trek, the Marvel Superheroes, Planet of the Apes, Happy Days and much more. Check out the […]

More Scenes from Toy Fair 1975

This is the Hasbro booth for 1975, that’s the suer awesome G.I Joe Skyhawk zooming over these gentleman’s heads. From left to right they are Jim Camilleri, Jack Kipperman and Merril Hassenfeld, the man who put the H in Hasbro. Neat! 1976 Hasbro G.I. Joe Catalog B. Goldberg and J. Romain are off the see […]

Live Long and Are You Going to Finish Your Fries?

I kind of went “primal geek” this past weekend when I took my kids to Burger King. The current Star Trek (well deserved) movie hype and promotion harkens back to when I was a lad and McDonalds ran their Star Trek Happy Meals. Somehow I conned my Mum into going more than once during that […]

Scenes from Toy Fair 1975

I love these little black and white vignettes taken from the floor of the NYC toy fair, while almost every square inch of toy fair is now covered by the “nerd media” (That ain’t a dig BTW, I’m a card carrying member) it’s hard to find good photos from the 70s. My dad was actually […]

Dinky Enterprise

Oh my, do I love this toy. What with it’s shooting disks, ejectable shuttle and the fact that it’s a toy first and not some franklin mint piece. Sometimes, I think I appreciate something like this more than an exact replica. More on Dinky Toys very soon…

Viewmaster: The 70s child home theatre system

While I never had the luxury of talking Viewmaster or a projector ($50 could be used to purchase more action figures than I’d ever need) I did have the “Mr. Spock’s Time Trek” reel set displayed and I loved it dearly. IMO, Filmation did no wrong in the 1970s IMO.

Zayre Toy Circular from 1975

It’s hard to find vintage newspaper toy circulars, most people threw them out five minutes after reading. That’s a shame because they are such a neat and attractive way to see pop culture history. That’s why this toy circular from the Zayre stores is one of my favourites, first I was five years old when […]
