Our best-selling items this year are the Star Wars characters, the Shogun [Warriors] and the Micronauts. Of course, we expect something big like this every year, and it’s a good guess that next year we’ll be looking at something coming from a movie like Close En­counters . . . maybe a man from outer space or a flying saucer of some kind.

Along with Star Wars’ toys, Ken­ner’s Fuzzy Pumper was popular. And I don’t want to forget Chutes Away and Mr. Quarterback for as long as we had them in stock. Other good items are the electronic gad­gets, Baby Come Back, comput­erized football and road race sets. The price of these items (some more than $25) has not been a fac­tor. Customers would pay anything for them, especially during the last four weeks of the year.

We aren’t promoting anything special. We categorize items throughout our store and the average shopper (usually a woman) will buy according to age, whether its dolls or sporting goods. Our #1 items are TV-advertised merchandise. ­We advertise heavily on radio and TV during the fourth quarter of the year and average two newspaper ­ads each week. We also run four­magazine-type ads each year as newspaper supplements.

Business in general? Probably the same as last year: pretty good. This year, however, shoppers seemed to put off their Christmas shopping until the last minute. I guess the economy and lack of funds have some impact. Because of the late shopping trend, some essential items were gone. But customers didn’t seem to mind. They came in to buy and switched to some­thing else when we didn’t have what they were looking for.

If you were a kid under ten in the late seventies, you witnessed one of the toy industry’s biggest game changers, the Kenner Star Wars line. Even though it was late for Christmas of ’77, Kenner came out with both barrels blazing the following year, utilizing their master toy license to the maximum with pages of product that made my seven-year-old heart flutter.

Even though I’m what you consider a SW dabbler at best, even I can’t resist that wonderful counter display. SWOON!

In my memory, that vinyl-caped Jawa came later but the catalogue disagrees with me. I remember seeing it and thinking it was a cop-out compared to mine. Tusken Raider and Death Squad Commander are two of my favourite figures, although I admit they were odd choices for an opening wave.

Any of these merchandisers full of products could likely put a kid through college, maybe not graduate school though.

The Landspeeder was really innovative and one of my favourites, it really looked like it was floating if you squinted, the droids always fell off the back but who cared?

The real reason Kenner made the figures 3 3/4″ was to sell us kids higher price point vehicles, what can I say other than “Thank You, Kenner”! I had pretty much every vehicle of this first wave, the primitive light and sound seemed really high-tech back then but wouldn’t even be found on a dollar store toy today.

I got the tie fighter for my eighth birthday, and my mom marched me down to the local ShopRite to get it, I remember they had the Comic Action Heroes Batmobiles on clearance and I almost waffled. I then proceeded to completely screw up the stickers on this thing ( I still suck at that!) which bothered me for the next four years.

Diecast vehicles were something every kid had to have, even though you had the larger versions.

I’m perplexed why they made Luke’s sabre yellow, the colour it’s never been.

Possibly one of the most overused toys in my room, the Death Star pretty much captivated me as a kid with its levels, trap doors, elevator and wonderful, wonderful trash compacter. Which is the only thing that survived my childhood. It may have been my favourite because I never really had a playset before, I don’t know but man was I hooked on them after this, it carried onto my adulthood and ate up most of my space.

Han and Chewie look seriously screwed in that picture, Vader is on top of them Saber drawn and they’re stuck in a doorway like the Three Stooges..

Kenner did a little label slap with a six-million-dollar man head set here.

Kenner also offered a 12″ line that wasn’t as popular as the 3 3/4″ figures, the big selling point to Leia was that girls could do her hair. Also, is calling her hair-do “Star Puffs” canon? 

That’s not Chewbacca, it’s a Big foot from the Six Million Dollar Man line of toys taking is place. That is so awesome.

Remote-controlled R2 D2 broke, I swear by January in my house and ended up being a fill-in for the 12″ figure.

Who could resist this impressive shot from 1978 of the “Sci-Fi” section of Macy’s? Filled with not only the hottest Kenner Star Wars items but in the back we have the Ideal STAR TEAM and Mego Micronauts. It truly is a seven-year-old’s dream if you’re me.

I love everything about this photo; I want to jump into it and buy a complete set of boxed Shogun Warriors and like all the Godzillas. I wanted these badly as a kid, but the folks said no. Now they task me, they task me! *Shakes Fist*

Gimbels 1980- Look at all those Minty carded Mego Superheroes, Funstuf Rage Cage Hulks and Remco Energized Spider-Men! I am in heaven.

Mego Superheroes and Adventure Team GI JO

This shot, which I would love to see in colour, is perhaps my favourite of all the photos I’ve found. It’s the closest I’ll get to the Toy Department of the Eaton’s in the Scarborough Town Center as a kid. I remember being in awe of all the art on the GI Joe packaging. That display box of Mego Superheroes also screams childhood to me!

Fisher Price Adventure People

The Fisher Price Adventure People showed up every Christmas like clockwork, and I always loved them. Such an amazing line of toys, non-violent and you weren’t embarrassed by having girl figures. Bring this back, Fisher Price!

I’ll admit I was 15 when this photo was taken, but I still visited the toy aisles A LOT (I’ve never stopped), which brings me back. I especially love the Kenner Power of the Force figures being regulated to the bottom for such new figure lines as the Infaceables, GI Joe, Thundercats and Masters of the Universe. I think most if not all of these lines are available at toy stores now. Well, probably not the Infaceables; history was not kind to them.

Aurora Monster Models

There is something so magical about a whole end cap of Glow-in-the-Dark Aurora monster models. I wonder about the value of that display.

Some sweet Bionic Man goodness on display here. Kenner Steve Austin and friends were a Christmas staple for me from 75-78 and a true highlight of being a kid. Those hot pink boxes really popped!

Mattel Slime Store Display

You know, I know it’s just a byproduct of borax, but dammit, I want a can of slime. Always have.

Heroes World Store in NJ 1982

For a kid growing up in a small farm town outside of Toronto, the New Jersey Heroes World stores might as well have been Narnia. I dreamt of going there every time I saw a comic book ad.

1980 Consumer’s Distributing Catalog

1980 Consumer’s Distributing Catalog

Hello and welcome to Consumer’s Distributing week on PlaidStallions. I recently picked up a grail catalogue in the form of the 1980/81 Consumer’s Distributing catalogue. For those not in the know, Consumer’s was a popular Canadian chain of catalogue showroom shops that ran from the 1950s until about 1995. At their peak, they had over 400 stores in Canada and many Northern US states.

It was not uncommon to see a Consumer’s Distributing catalogue in a Canadian home, especially in my grandmother’s place because she never threw them away. I seriously found the final CD catalogue in her house in 2013.

So, I often correlate this catalogue to spending Sunday afternoons at my grandparent’s house, burning holes into the many toy pages. So, all this week I’ll add scans of my favourites to the blog.

The release of Empire Strikes Back really renewed my at the time, somewhat languishing interest in all things Star Wars.  There was something of a slump for a lot of us by 1979.

It’s funny that by 1980, the Star Wars toy page was mainly Kenner items with very few “Space Imitators” being involved save for Kusan’s Sonic Fazer and that laser gun that was everywhere.

Now, the figures in this catalogue would come in sets and usually, they came in brown cardboard boxes. I never went this route as a kid, one because I couldn’t afford it and 2 because it was fun to look at those card backs. However, I don’t want to think of what collectors would pay for those cardboard boxes these days. Oi vey.
