I don’t think I’ve ever seen this toy before, it reminds me of the “rope ladder” I tried to buy from one those “Ninja” magazines in the early 80s. My treehouse ladder was a fence when I was a kid…

I love this, although I don’t remember Green Lantern appearing on the Super Friends, nor any of those villains at the time. If I saw this as a kid, I’d need to know all those villains’ names right away, that would have bugged me.

My memories of America’s bicentennial are mainly based on the Toy Industry magazines my dad subscribed to in the 1970s. I had just started reading. There were numerous articles about how risky it was to create merchandise based on it, as it would date so quickly. I think that’s why so many lower-cost rack toys like this seemed to be the order of the day.

I also bought the Bicentennial DC treasury edition with Superman on the cover, which had nothing to do with Superman inside. As a Canadian, I felt quite hosed.

Remco & AHI Make it Happen in 1983!

REMCO AHI MAKE IT HAPPEN

I recently found a Hong Trade catalogue from 1983 highlighting the toy manufacturers of the era. I plan to share pages from this book for the rest of the year.

Our first subject is Remco/Azrak Hamway International. At this time, the manufacturing was done by a company called SOMA traders ltd. SOMA is still around today and is likely responsible for some appearances of older AHI tooling showing up as knock-offs.

SGT Rock was one of Remco’s bright spots that year. It was obviously meant to catch some of the heat that GI Joe was enjoying, and it totally worked. In addition to licensed copycat lines, Remco made straight-up RAH Knock-Off lines that are tons of fun.

The Universal Monsters figures were still a seller for Remco at this point, although this would be their final year. The Monsters action figure license would next land at Imperial Toys.

Mego Mad Monsters Love

I adore the Mego Mad Monsters, it’s definitely in my top five all time Monster toy lines (which I’ll speak more about this month). While Mego didn’t get the Universal license, they created a really crazy series of generic Monster figures that even glow in the dark!

Here’s Mego Dracula and the Mummy in their glowing form.

Here is the stunning Mego Counter Display box featuring gorgeous art by the legendary Gray Morrow.

I don’t have all of the Mad Monsters in every one of their packaging formats but I am obsessed with Frankenstein, so i grab every single thing I see that I don’t have.

Space Sword!

Nine years after first posting a want ad on here, I am finally reunited with my beloved Space Sword. This is all thanks to Mark from the soon to be open Dr Tongues I Had that shop in Portland Oregon.

Mark saw my plea and sold me his childhood space sword. The quest is over and I couldn’t be happier.

I honestly got days worth of play out of this thing and it’s glow in the dark feature was hugely important to me.

Every time I walk into my office, this is the first thing that greets me. There are rarer and definitely more expensive toys in this work but honestly, this is in my top five.

Glowing Monster Puffy Stickers

One of the things that I see every morning that makes me happy is a panel of these, produced in the late 1970s by God only knows who, these puffy stickers appeared everywhere when I was a kid. I’ve got some in on my old Black Hole lunch box, they’re in an album and I’m pretty sure I left a few in my old bedroom.

This thing cost me ten bucks, can’t beat that with a stick.

I seem to recall getting them in a gumball machine but after one search on ebay, I can see that they were sold in small packs and were even sold as Halloween Treats!

One of these days, I’ll try and collect every packaging variation. I mentioned they glow in the dark right? Cause I think they’re required by law to…

Tomland Famous Monsters of Legend Archive Launches

It may seem odd to launch a Monster themed page in December but it’s Halloween all year round at my place and it’s rare these days that I get this excited, so it simply couldn’t wait.

Tomland is probably best known for the Star Raiders, an 8″ Mego like line of action figures clearly meant to mimick Star Wars. However, they also produced a very fun line of Monster Action figures and released two sets with what seems like a few year’s gap between them.

The first series consisted of four figures, most have seen them as they were readily available across the country in stores such as K-Mart.

However, the second series, produced in 1980 seems to have seen almost no distribution. It consisted of 8 figures, the first four characters from series one (now in “glow in the dark” format) and four new characters which were pretty big names. Namely Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy and the Wolfman.

What makes this even sweeter for me is that Tomland seemed to be directly copying the Lincoln Monsters which most would know are my favourite monster toys ever. Sadly, they are also some of the hardest to find.

So I’m especially proud to be able to, for the first time (to my knowledge), present the entire set of Tomland Famous Monsters of Legends figures in their own archive. Got something I don’t have and want to share? Email me!

Fun with Glow in the Dark

Glow in the dark was always a selling feature for me as a kid, it really gave toys some extra play value, especially anything related to monsters. So i thought it would be fun to turn out the lights and see these things in action. Above are the Remco Mini Monsters and there is more incandescent toy action after the jump.

This is the mexican version of Zorak from the Cipsa Big Jim line.

The Phantom of the Opera from the Remco Monsters 9″ line.

Toriac from the Lords of Light and Membros from the Micronauts.

Frankenstein from the Remco Monsters at Home Series.

A Marx Wolfman figure.

It’s hard to see but this is Mego Mad Monsters Dracula and Mummy.
