Mego Comic Action Heroes Board Game

When I was putting together issue 10 of Toy-Ventures magazine’s Mego Comic Action Heroes guide, I almost forgot to add this fantastic oddity from the United Kingdom. What’s worse is I’ve owned a copy for over 25 years, finding it in a London (Ontario) thrift shop and it was less than ten feet away from me. I wanted to show more images than I did but the space wasn’t available, so I thought I’d follow up with a post.

Mego Comic Action Heroes Board Game

Denys Fisher (then owned by Palitoy) released this board game to coincide with the Mego Comic Action Heroes toys to launch in the UK. It’s a curiousity as it features some odd and off-model DC characters. The artist didn’t have reliable reference material for Shazam and may have been drawing him based on the Mego figure, which was hardly faithful either.

It also features characters like the Riddler (who was excluded in the Comic Action Heroes) and Mr. Freeze in his only appearance in Mego-related products.

The game has your heroes trying to get to Gotham City Hall to have a showdown with…The Penguin. Yup, he’s the boss level in this, it seems kind of cruel sending Superman to beat up Oswald Cobblepot, but here we are.

I’ve taken some shots of the board, to showcase some of the artwork; some of it I’ve seen in merchandising before, but others, yeah, I’ve never seen them used like this.

Regarding the cover design for Toy-Ventures Magazine, I am surprisingly pretty hands-off. I explain my concept to the artist, and often, in that discussion, they make it better. I retire to the interior knowing I’m in good hands, and honestly, it’s always worked out great.

However, for issue 9 and crafting the Mego Comic Action Heroes guide, I took the reins and designed a cover using Mego’s original art. What better than what drew me to these unique toys in the first place?

The only problem was, who do I go with? The DC or Marvel Superheroes. I love them equally; as a kid, I went back and forth with my loyalty. It all seemed to depend on what new figure I got.

An added pressure to this is that this would be the first Superhero related cover that Toy-Ventures Magazine has ever had. We seem predicated on Monsters and Aliens, and I’m okay with that, but “the capes” needed some love.

My good friend and frequent collaborator Corey Lechat floated the concept of multiple covers, but that wasn’t an affordable situation (I wish it were though).

Fortunately, I have peers who know this struggle well. I reached out to the one person I knew would tip me in the right direction, namely Robyn Adams, creator of the MegoMuseum (perhaps you’ve heard of it).

She looked at both covers and said, “Marvel,” adding, “I’ve seen that DC art a lot and the Hulk bursting through is fun.”

And just like the final cover says, “BOOM!” that was it; I couldn’t see it any other way.

It didn’t hurt that I had the Mego Comic Action Hulk as a kid, and I loved him fiercely.

Issue 9 of Toy-Ventures magazine has the most comprehensive guide to the Mego Comic Action Heroes ever published.

Mego Superheroes in Japanese Starlog

This page makes me weak in the knees and it’s not just the gem-mint carded Mego Riddler on display. Those Mego Comic Action Heroes’ deluxe sets with the Batmobile and Spider-Car are big favourites of mine. I also don’t have that AHI parachuting Superman.

This lovely ad uses the dreaded “D” word; everybody run! As a kid, I did chicken out of buying a Mego Catwoman because I feared my friends seeing a girl doll. I regret that behaviour to this day. I use the term “Man-Dolls” with sarcastic pride, and so should you.

Toy-Ventures and PlaidStallions present a new line of limited-edition collector pins: Monsters, Knock-Off action figures and Brick Mantooth.

This page contains many happy memories, especially the Mego Spider-Car, Corgi Jrs and those awesome 12″ Mego Superheroes, see below for my video on the 12″ Superman range. 

As a kid, I only ever saw Superhero t-shirts in ads like this. I would have loved a Captain America and never dreamed of seeing a Thor. Strange, now I can’t leave the house without seeing a Superhero t-shirt. I actually stopped wearing them.

The Superhero belt buckles were a Heroes World Staple, as are those Sunglasses by Nasta. The Superhero record case is another old friend of mine. 

I loved those Treasury Edition-sized colouring books of the Superheroes by Whitman and have featured them here before. Those Hasbro art sets are another item I was unaware of as a child.

The glorious Rack Toys by AHI are only eclipsed for me by the Chemtoy Spider-Man web maker, a very happy afternoon of play.

I had those Superhero sheets at the bottom, and I still use them. Amazing how far the Janex Batman alarm clock got, it seemed to be everywhere.
