The Addar Planet of the Apes model kits arrived in 1973, and wow, did they kick off a licensing explosion.

These kits were EVERYWHERE when I was a kid. AMT Star Trek seemed to dominate every toy store, including local variety stores and cigar stores. I probably had them all at one point, completely ruined by a lack of skill and patience. I got there eventually, but wow, that road was paved with many swears.

When I finally got to Cons as a teen in the 1980s, buttons were a big deal. I doubt many were officially licensed, but we didn’t seem too bothered by it. I’ll take a “Star Trek Lives” bumper sticker.

Our website turns 10 this month so we begin by discussing it’s origins and why it came to be. With the topic already being nostalgia, we thought it would be fun to talk about the top ten thing we miss about the 1970s.


This is not a “things were better in our day” type discussion (We like Ebay and YouTube just fine thank you very much) but more about the certain rituals, tastes, establishments and items that sadly, no longer have a place in our modern world.

Topics range from Saturday morning TV to local toy stores, full comic book racks everywhere you looked, ice cream men on bicycles, long gone fast foods, Jason’s crush on Rhoda Morgensten (and her mom!), Network Stars Battling, Heroes World adverts, colorful home decor and of course, wish books.

These are the wonderful, magnificent, Mold-A-Rama Blow Mould Frankensteins.

Mold-A-Rama first appeared in the mid-60s, and was a staple of the Museum and Zoo experience for lucky kids in the 60s, 70s , and 80s. 

For around $1, you could watch a vending machine make a version of your favorite museum or zoo souvenir using an injection mold.











The piece would come out of the machine scalding hot, and have a wonderful plasticky smell. It would feel like candle wax. At zoos you would frequently get Gorillas, Elephants etc. 




At Museums, you could Space Shuttles, Presidential busts, The Space Needle etc. 




This Frankenstein is one of the best and most sought-after Mold-A-Rama creations. 


He was made from the 60s through the 70s. His copyright on the back sometimes says "Universal Pictures, Co" and other times says "Universal Studios", depending on when it was released. 

Any Mold-A-Rama and monster lover must have every color available!








Notice that the figure resembles the Rapco bisque monsters available in the 70s
