The Addar Planet of the Apes model kits arrived in 1973, and wow, did they kick off a licensing explosion.

These kits were EVERYWHERE when I was a kid. AMT Star Trek seemed to dominate every toy store, including local variety stores and cigar stores. I probably had them all at one point, completely ruined by a lack of skill and patience. I got there eventually, but wow, that road was paved with many swears.

When I finally got to Cons as a teen in the 1980s, buttons were a big deal. I doubt many were officially licensed, but we didn’t seem too bothered by it. I’ll take a “Star Trek Lives” bumper sticker.

Mego Superheroes in Japanese Starlog

This page makes me weak in the knees and it’s not just the gem-mint carded Mego Riddler on display. Those Mego Comic Action Heroes’ deluxe sets with the Batmobile and Spider-Car are big favourites of mine. I also don’t have that AHI parachuting Superman.

This lovely ad uses the dreaded “D” word; everybody run! As a kid, I did chicken out of buying a Mego Catwoman because I feared my friends seeing a girl doll. I regret that behaviour to this day. I use the term “Man-Dolls” with sarcastic pride, and so should you.

Toy-Ventures and PlaidStallions present a new line of limited-edition collector pins: Monsters, Knock-Off action figures and Brick Mantooth.

This page contains many happy memories, especially the Mego Spider-Car, Corgi Jrs and those awesome 12″ Mego Superheroes, see below for my video on the 12″ Superman range. 

As a kid, I only ever saw Superhero t-shirts in ads like this. I would have loved a Captain America and never dreamed of seeing a Thor. Strange, now I can’t leave the house without seeing a Superhero t-shirt. I actually stopped wearing them.

The Superhero belt buckles were a Heroes World Staple, as are those Sunglasses by Nasta. The Superhero record case is another old friend of mine. 

I loved those Treasury Edition-sized colouring books of the Superheroes by Whitman and have featured them here before. Those Hasbro art sets are another item I was unaware of as a child.

The glorious Rack Toys by AHI are only eclipsed for me by the Chemtoy Spider-Man web maker, a very happy afternoon of play.

I had those Superhero sheets at the bottom, and I still use them. Amazing how far the Janex Batman alarm clock got, it seemed to be everywhere.

One of the pages that I drooled over in the 1980 Consumer’s Distributing catalogue would be this spread of Mego (Well here in Canada, Grand Toys), Star Trek the Motion Picture and Buck Rogers toys.

I was that kid who loved the Motion Picture merchandise mainly because of the Marvel comic. Buck Rogers was also “must-see TV” in my household.

Consumers had a great assortment of Mego Star Trek merchandise, including four of the Aliens. All of the Aliens were sold in Canada because Grand Toys paid upfront for merchandise with a letter of credit, so even though Star Trek was a dud for Mego, the second wave hit Canadian shores regardless.

For Buck Rogers, I vividly remember clipping out the figure sets (which came in little brown catalogue boxes that I wish I could find) and pasting them to my Christmas list that year.

However, the Mego Buck Rogers line was not to be. My parents decided I had too many figure lines. They had a good case, citing the whole “Battlestar Galactica” debacle (had to have the figures, never gelled with the show). I really couldn’t find a loophole, so despite my love for the series (I still love it!), I had to settle for playing with my friend’s Buck figures when he visited.

The one odd thing about the Mego Buck Rogers assortment in the consumers’ catalogue is the omission of the Star Fighter, quickly the most popular vehicle in the line. Instead, however, the Land Rover is pretty darn swell.

The Worcester Toy Company is the organization that I would give the credit for making the oddest Star Trek toy ever. That’s a big deal because there were lots of dogs in the race. However,  this item tops even the Star Trek Metal Detector, sorry “Metal Detection Probe” or that Star Trek helmet that everybody and their brother has blogged about.

No, I’m talking about the absolute silliest item I’ve ever seen with “Star Trek” slapped on it. 

The Star Trek tea set to me is the oddest Star Trek Toy ever and at the same, the greatest.

Who is this for? Little boys rarely play tea time (unless they’re Martin Prince) and while I’m positive girls liked Star Trek back in the day, I’m not sure those same girls would want to reenact serving Mr.Spock a finger sandwich.

Anyway, I need to own this, I think that goes without saying. If anyone has one they wish to sell me, I promise to do a video of me having tea with my Mego Captain Kirk doll.

Worcester also made one other item and while it’s not exactly a canon piece, it’s kind of cool nonetheless.

Star Trek Big Wheels by Worcester

The Star Trek Cycles are essentially Worcester’s take on the Big Wheel toys by Marx. I do applaud the Nacelles on the back and the fact that it says six space messages, I’d like to know what it said.

I’d also like to see Kirk, Spock, and McCoy rolling around on one of these bad boys. I hope I’m not alone in that.

I found these wonderful pages from a 1976 Dinky catalog in my server and thought I’d give them a proper share, Dinky was the Rolls Royce of diecast and I love their licensed vehicles from Gerry Anderson and Star Trek with a passion, they’re just brilliant toys.

Their Eagles may have not had show accurate coloration at times but they certainly were great toys.

A lot of my friends had these vehicles from Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet growing up despite never seeing the series.

The Enterprise is one of my favorite Dinky pieces of all time.

UFO is my single favourite Anderseries and I treasure these vehicles.

1977 saw the introduction of Mickey Mouse to the fold and more Superhero related products which would eventually become the bread and butter of the company for the rest of the decade..

New this year was the Remco Disney Action Figures. The McDonalds characters were not the runaway sales hit that AHI expected them to be, according to sources they were a sales disappointment..

Utility belts were a big winner for Remco, this year’s assortment featured Space:1999, a big-budget science fiction series that hoped to rival Star Trek. Every year Remco released a Utility belt that made no sense, this year it was the Mickey Mouse, why am I disturbed at the sight of him in jeans?

The Batman Trik-Trak set harkened back to the 1960s Batman craze, Remco would continue to mine Superheroes for the next few years.
