I worked in Advertising for a department store chain at this time. We still used illustrations, not photos – and we could NOT sketch even the hint of a navel in a drawing of a two-piece swimsuit! I think this style was popular because you could be nearly naked and keep your navel under wraps at the same time.
Yes, I remember the "peekaboo" look. Must have made for some weird tan lines.
