I was actually given the choice by my parents of seeing Popeye in the theater or getting a used bike and I went with Popeye.
The big question is whether or not Danny Cruz regretted his decision.
Depending on the neighborhood/ bus route-costs, a bike meant the difference between being trapped inside walking distance of your house or having a good chunk of the city within reach including (ta-ta-ta-tum) the mall.
For a lot of kids, 1981 was right smack in the middle of the Star Wars franchise mania. Empire Strikes Back had just come out in May of the previous year, so even Buck Rogers was lookin' kinda shabby against the awesomness of AT-ATs, Snow Speeders, Yoda, and (always) Boba Fett.
I ended up getting a bike a year or so later so it all worked out for me in the end-no regrets lol.
