The Gerry Anderson brand had a renaissance in the mid-90s UK. The consumers were mainly kids, so a lot of fun toys and action figures got made that had them in mind. It was so fun! I had never seen these brilliant play suits. There are several characters, but the Troy Tempest set has me smitten.

I have never seen this puzzle before, and I hope it’s part of a series. The art isn’t likely swiped from a comic but an original creation. 

It makes me smile that Batman is nowhere to be seen; it’s the battle of Catwoman VS Robin, like he stands a chance.

When you’ve been collecting for a while, there are certain collectibles that you’ve wanted, but at one point, were so cheap and plentiful, you figured you’d get to them. Then, when you circle back, they’re “Rare” and “Hot right now,” and even though you understand the supply and demand aspect of the hobby, somehow you can’t get past the bias of “those used to be everywhere!” Yeah, this thing. Mego Superheroes in Japanese Starlog

This page makes me weak in the knees and it’s not just the gem-mint carded Mego Riddler on display. Those Mego Comic Action Heroes’ deluxe sets with the Batmobile and Spider-Car are big favourites of mine. I also don’t have that AHI parachuting Superman.

This lovely ad uses the dreaded “D” word; everybody run! As a kid, I did chicken out of buying a Mego Catwoman because I feared my friends seeing a girl doll. I regret that behaviour to this day. I use the term “Man-Dolls” with sarcastic pride, and so should you.

Toy-Ventures and PlaidStallions present a new line of limited-edition collector pins: Monsters, Knock-Off action figures and Brick Mantooth.

This page contains many happy memories, especially the Mego Spider-Car, Corgi Jrs and those awesome 12″ Mego Superheroes, see below for my video on the 12″ Superman range. 

As a kid, I only ever saw Superhero t-shirts in ads like this. I would have loved a Captain America and never dreamed of seeing a Thor. Strange, now I can’t leave the house without seeing a Superhero t-shirt. I actually stopped wearing them.

The Superhero belt buckles were a Heroes World Staple, as are those Sunglasses by Nasta. The Superhero record case is another old friend of mine. 

I loved those Treasury Edition-sized colouring books of the Superheroes by Whitman and have featured them here before. Those Hasbro art sets are another item I was unaware of as a child.

The glorious Rack Toys by AHI are only eclipsed for me by the Chemtoy Spider-Man web maker, a very happy afternoon of play.

I had those Superhero sheets at the bottom, and I still use them. Amazing how far the Janex Batman alarm clock got, it seemed to be everywhere.

So the story begins with a UFO and the US military launching a missile at it. Turns out it’s a witch, I love how this kid coloured her green. 

I just want to point out that the art is kind of nice. This is a swipe from Kirby but it’s well done.

The book opens on the planet Ultima and the emperor wishing to help a neighbouring planet which is suffering from famine. 

He wants to send treasure and we get several pages of the treasure, this is standard colouring book filler. T

hings go awry while transporting the treasure and the ship is attacked by the aforementioned Space Pirates. 

I know I’m a grown man but this is how I still picture space pirates to this day, hat, eye patch, and swords. This book loses points for the lack of a robot parrot.

Great MAzinga has been watching this on his “Space screen” and comes to the rescue, note that he is the same size as the ship.

A great battle ensues, resulting the pirate ship being blown up but special attention is given to note that the pirates weren’t harmed. They float around in space shooting at Mazinga with a laser blunderbuss (Yes!) and a cannon.

Losing the battle, the pirates visit a giant spider, who makes a web between planets, note that he is as big as a planet here or don’t because it doesn’t seem to matter.

Mazinger becomes trapped and the pirates steal his brain, which renders him helpless. I don’t know much about Mazinger so i don’t know if that’s correct or not. Pretty sure the Shogun Warriors had pilots but in these books, they’re sentient robot characters. 

Now Great Mazinger is about to get eaten by the Giant Spider.

Meanwhile, the brain is not co-operating with the pirates and makes several escape attempts, I’m not sure where these guys are, didn’t their ship explode? Anyhoo, it manages to escape their safe and reunite with it’s body.

Mazinga threatens the Spider to make another web to trap the space pirates and the book reaches a wonderful non-violent conclusion. Mazinger is far more gentle than Dragun who commits genocide in his book.

The pirates are jailed and Mazinger is now 5′ 10″, as fun as this is, 8 year old me would have been perturbed this wasn’t like the Marvel comic, i was kind of an uptight kid. Now, I just find it brilliantly childlike and charming.

It seems that 1981, Marvel dumped Whitman in favour of Parkes Run and the format changed from 3 comics to 2, thanks inflation!

As a side note, my dad knew a distributor of these back in the early 1980s. I remember seeing a whole skid of these two packs in his warehouse. The man said to me “take as many comics as you want!” but my dad’s face suggested that I should probably be happy with one…..

Let’s start with the cover (LOTR Cover): Frodo

Gollum, who lives in the land of Dairy Queen, is disgusted by the subpar grafitti that covers his rock. Orcs have no sense of craftsmanship! 

A major complaint of mine is that there is so much potential for action-packed fighting scenes involving orcs, Ringwraiths, even a Balrog – and the artist chooses to draw a table in the Prancing Pony – WITHOUT ANY CHARACTERS! Wow! Nothing inspires a child’s imagination like coloring featureless furniture.

>I would bet money that this image appeared on a van in the ‘70s! This is actually a cool image of an interesting character which was featured on other merchandise, like T-shirts. If the Ringwraith were drawn just a little larger!

I was always terrified of the orcs in Bakshi’s Rings; I think that the rotoscoping effectively gave them that visual dissonance – a “wrongness” – that implied a lot of the detail and left their appearance to the viewer’s imagination. This is what the coloring book artist came up with. Yep. The Abbott and Costello of orcs…

I had a big crush on Bakshi’s Galadriel. She was so pretty and exuded calm and confidence. Here, she looks like a generic Disney princess, delighted by Frodo’s abdominal pain.

“Boromir tries to take the Ring.” Or is hitting Frodo up for spare change, judging by his sheepish stance and Frodo’s peeved expression.

This is about as much action as any page contains. The orcs don’t look like they’re attacking Boromir so much as they look like they want him to know how much his drinking hurts them. I know it’s the Horn of Gondor and all, but the scene looks like an intervention gone wrong!.

Here we see the terrible toll of alcoholism as Aragorn is horrified upon discovering Boromir’s prematurely bloated corpse. Poke it with a stick. See what happens.


“So ends the first part of the history of the War of the Ring.” Sadly, there was no second – not until Rankin-Bass realized that “Where There’s a Whip, There’s a Way,” that is!

I got a lot of nice mail over Krofft week and many folks wanted to join in! Seeing as most of you have better collections than me, it made sense to showcase them here today.


Manuel has a great selection of Krofft borad games, I’ve never seen the Bugaloo’s one above.

A lot of folks noticed my lack of Pufnstuf merch this week, mea culpa?

I am going to assume this is all the same game with different shows plastered on them.

Sharry sent in this awesome Bigfoot and Wildboy puzzle I want to own.

Speaking of Sharry, she’s also got some cool encounters with former Krofft celebrities, here she is with Sigmund’s Johnny Whitaker.
