I don’t collect Bugs Bunny merchandise as an adult, I honestly feel watching Looney Tunes as a kid was time well spent. The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner show was an oasis every Sunday away from “Hee Haw” and freaking “Lawrence Welk” (which I now adore). With national recognition, it’s no surprise that Bugs enjoyed “Krusty the Clown” merchandising levels. 

It could be argued that Bugs is a good role model as he eats his vegetables, but I digress. When pouring through a 70s Sears catalogue, I saw this page and immediately recognized that Toothpaste dispenser. I’m pretty positive that we had that in our bathroom as a kid, and it made a huge mess, so it eventually got removed. I haven’t thought of it in years.

This Bugs Bunny Playset was only available at Spiegel. I wish I had this as a kid. I mean, look at it! It’s amazing.

Phoenix or PAC Toys was formed out of the ashes of Mego Corporation by PAC Packaging, a toy industry packaging company that did work for Mego.

Its president Joe Ruzzi had inherited the molds for many of Mego’s Micronauts toys and morphed them into a new fantasy-based toy line called “Lords of Light”.

The main gimmick of Lords of Light were glow sticks. This is was dreamed up by  Ruzzi on a fishing trip when he noticed his sons playing with the glow sticks like a toy. 

The line had an ambitious TV campaign planned and a gorgeous comic strip drawn by EC Comics legend, Howard Norstrand. Norstrand passed away the same year this was produced (1984), so this may be the last comic story he ever produced.

The PAC Toys Lords of Light Comic tells the story of the planet Izzur (Ruzzi spelled backward) and it’s struggle for resources as their twin suns begin to fade.

Issue 4 of Toy-Ventures magazine is now shipping, it’s full of cool toys from the 60s, 70s and 80s, get it while it’s hot!

It’s hard to believe that toymakers thought the next merchandising blitz would come from a David Lynch film but that’s exactly what happened in 1984. Dune got the full treatment with colouring books, bed sheets and of course a selection of action figures produced by LJN. The movie wasn’t particularly kid (or for that matter general public) friendly and as a result, the spice warriors of Dune resided in the clearance aisle.

What’s perplexing to me is most of this stuff got made, yet the gigantically more kid-friendly “Last Starfighter” toy line never saw the light of day. Aggghhh!

LJN bought a lot of trade ads for this line, anticipating it be the movie hit of the Christmas season..

Gurney Was also cut from the team, however, the world would not be deprived of Patrick Stewart action figures for very long. Notice they mention several sandworms and they weren’t allowed to show them. I find that weird seeing as they were largely phallic symbols.

I recently acquired the 1979 Consumer’s Distributing catalog, a Canadian chain, Consumers was one of those stores where you filled out a slip of paper (I tended to use fake names), it went down one of those cool tubes and then 20 minutes later your purchase rolled up a conveyer belt (or a substitution item, which happened an awful lot). Consumer’s Distributing is special to me, especially around the late 1970s. My grandmother would get these in and like a lot of grandpeople, she would keep them around, for years. Seriously, I found some in her house after she passed.

I never usually win the late 70s catalogs because of Star Wars collectors coveting them and driving up the price but I lucked out and got the 1979 and I will be sharing it through a series of blog posts.

I begin with this…glorious page that I totally burned holes into as a wee lad (click to enlarge)

My main love for this page was Micronauts, which were totally my jam in 1979, although that figure set always confused, why Antron by himself? Without Repto and Membros, this set didn’t make much sense, however, as an adult collector, I would love to find this three-pack in the consumer’s distributing box. The true highlight of this page however is the appearance of the Battlestar Galactica Landram, a vehicle that was only sold in Canada and goes now for thousands in the box. I can’t begin to tell you how many of these I found when I was first starting out as a collector, probably a half dozen in the box and I found a few loose ones at yard sales. No, I did not buy all of them or keep them but as you can imagine, I wish I had.

Ok let me address the fact that for some reason I keep saying “Star Sword” despite what’s on the label but please don’t let that mar my celebration of two of my favourite childhood toys, Space Sword and Space Shield!

These glow in the dark Star Wars inspired toys were the source of hours and hours of backyard play for me in the late 1970s and I actually like them better than officially licensed toys.
