Heroes in Action S.W.A.T set (sponsored link) –

My introduction to this line was a comic book ad, sadly the comic was 3 years old at the time. So, I never saw them as a kid, but that ad has always given me an appreciation for these crude, early 70s attempts ata 3 3/4″ toyline. I’m not much of a military toy guy, the exceptions being soldiers fighting giant spiders or, I guess, when the general happens to be a Gorilla or a skeleton. There has got to be some sci-fi or horror there for me.

Back on subject, I’ve never seen this SWAT set before, and hey, it’s really tempting. Also, no sleeves for the SWAT; the M-16s aren’t the only guns they brought.

I have never seen this wonderful horror shirt from the early 70s, and it took me like three passes to even notice the Morbius from the Spider-Man comic swipe. It’s like walking around with every “Night Gallery” on your chest….

Star Wars inspired Sleeping Bag (sponsored link) —

So my friend Courtney sent me and a really cool Star Trek Sleeping bag which forced me to choose. I chose this one because….space tugboat. We’ve got the Pod from 2001 and 2R-2D over there and then what I sincerely hope is a nod to Quark. Tell me if I made the right call, I seriously need a win.

Grizzly Iron-On Transfer with Neal Adams art (sponsored link) –

I am lukewarm on the movie (although a big fan of the genre), but the merch is awesome. I learned from this Iron-On seller that the poster art was Neal Adams, and I’m not sure I knew that before.

Tootsie Toys S.W.A.T set (sponsored link) —

SWAT much like sharks and dinosaurs are public domain concepts, so Tootsie Toy whipped up this set to catch the heat from the TV program. It probably worked, I have a Tootsie Toy Catalogue on the site here if you want to check it out.

Deiner Kung Fu Masters Bendies (sponsored link) —

Speaking of generic terms, Kung Fu was also one of those things. I love these guys. They look like Caine and Master Po and they will be mine someday.

I regularly watched Grape Ape as a kid, although I can’t remember much of it, it’s cool to see he got some merch in the 80s.

In the 3rd grade, my mum bought me a Sesame Street poncho, not realizing that the peer pressure at that time was to listen to KISS and pretend you’d seen “Alien”. I was so embarrassed and would have killed for a Spider-Man.

Blade Runner UK Annual (sponsored link)

As much as I love UK annuals, this one would be a hard purchase for me. It’s the same Marvel Comics adaptation I spent all of my Summer Money on when I was 11. I was expecting it to be a cool space movie, it is not. I never got over that, and while I think the film is visually striking, it’s not my thing.

GI Joe Dangerous Assignment Game (sponsored link) —

This is easily one of my bigger grails, a board game based on the GI Joe Adventure team when I was five years old. I love absolutely everything about this, but when it does show up, it’s a bad time, like the Holidays during a 3-week mail strike. Yay!

UPDATE: I know it sold but it’s still worth talking about.

If I have a rack toy weakness, it’s little soldier-type figures like this. I can use them for my “Dawn of the Dead” diorama!

It’s incredible how much torment vintage cardboard and cellophane can bring upon a person who has incredible luck with Big Jim this year, but it’s haunting me a little.

LJN TV Stars from 1976

I never had the LJN TV Super Stars, a Mego scaled line based on then-popular shows like The Rookies, Emergency, and S.W.A.T. I would have loved Police and Firemen to clean up after my Mego Superheroes or perhaps interact with the Mego Star Trek crew. Also impressive are the number of vehicles and accessories they offered.

I’m especially enamoured by the S.W.A.T playset, LJN did a really nice job with it and I’m a sucker for those old-timey computers.

Fleetwood toys was one of the biggest and most prolific manufacturers of Rack Toys during the 1970s and 80s.

In 1977, they were truly on top of their game as evidenced by the massive amount of licenses they had this year including the Marvel Comics Superheroes, Welcome Back Kotter, Starsky and Hutch, The Rookies, SWAT, Tarzan, the Space Sentinels even Ba-Ba Blacksheep!

Ben Cooper was the leading manufacturer of Halloween costumes and Novelties in the United States during the 1970s.

LJN Toys for 1975

Founded in 1970 by Jack Friedman, LJN was one of the 1970s more successful toy companies, offering a mix of nicely made licensed products and some lower cost “house brand” items.

1975 saw the company in full swing with hot TV licenses such as “The Rookies” and “Emergency!” as well as Petite, their attempt to capture the fashion doll market and “Mr. Action”, their version of G.I. Joe.

These TV licensed gun sets were likely made by HG Toys, who never missed the opportunity to put TV show logos on weapons. Getting a S.W.A.T rifle in my neighbourhood made you a kind of royalty back in 1977.

I personally used a stick combined with the “an-an-an-an-an-an” sound effect, which totally bit….

Great that theme song ain’t leaving my head anytime soon. Eventhough I’m not even sure I’ve ever seen an episode of this series, I will admit to thinking that playset of theirs is one of the coolest vinyl sets the 70s had to offer. I’m a sucker for anything that has those old giant reel to reel computers on it.
