Knock-Off King

When I started collecting Mego-scaled Knock-Offs, I knew there was at least one Elvis out there, but since then, I’ve been on my third bootleggy iteration of Mr. The Pelvis.

My latest, “The King,” is my most original and new favourite. He’s a 9″ doll with a unique head sculpt (which isn’t bad, all things considered), some truly interesting clothes, and a blow-moulded body in gold and red. It’s probably a recycled Ultra-Man bootleg.

While I’m probably certain that this was just done out of a complete lack of care, that extra bit of irony puts a perfect bow on why I love collecting this crap. What commemorates Elvis better than a hilariously badly made toy that doesn’t give his estate a penny?

If there are two things I love it’s Mego Knock Off action figures and Ninjas. So when my friend Rob sent me the eBay link for these awesome 80s Ninja figures I grabbed them with both hands. 

They are usually called “Tong Ninjas” due to the body being marked Tong Inc. This was a popular body for Mego Knock-Offs in the 1970s and 80s and really got around. Tong bodies can be found around the world under such banners as Danny Dare, Rescue Squad and Action Apeman.

This brand is called Ninja or I guess “Nin Ja” as the card has you believe. They are the product of the East-West Distribution co and that 2.99 price point suggests mid to late 1980s.

Now I’ve seen the Tong Ninja figures before but it’s usually in a two-pack under the name “Hip Yick Trading Company” which looks like this:

However, there are some subtle differences, first I believe the Hip Yick Ninjas are 9″ (correct me if I’m wrong there) while the “Nin Ja” figures are 8″ tall. The paint apps on the heads are different and there is a third ninja.

There is a grey Tong Ninja, didn’t see that coming, although that’s probably the point after all. I can confirm I missed out on the white figure in this series, so it seems “Nin Ja” had at least three figures, hopefully, there is also a red one out there.

Knock-Offs Book

Hey folks, if you didn’t catch my Livestream this Saturday,  I’m doing my follow-up to Rack Toys with a book I’ve titled Knock-Offs: Totally Unauthorized Action Figures.  This is a piece I’ve been working on since 2012 but stuff got in the way and I had to put it on hold. I’m glad I did because it just made the whole thing better. 

Knock-Offs is a celebration of the dimestore bootleg figure, the copyright-infringing silliness  meant to fool our grandpeople. The subjects range from toys of the 1960’s to the 2000s and include every popular genre you can think of.

1977 saw Gabriel Toys try an interesting experiment in action figures.

Instead of licensing a hollywood movie, they sought to captilize on the making of a movie by creating a set based on then legendary stuntman Hal Needham. 

Gabriel devoted six pages of the 1977 catalog to this line and it was clearly their big feature.

 

Gabriel’s spokesman was Dick Van Dyke that year and here is a rare toy fair sales reel for the line.
 

The unique concept allowed kids to film an action sequence in a Western complete with breakaway sets, a camera and our titular Stunt Man, who wasn’t a household name.

This really was a great and well-made concept.

This should have been as big as Evel Knievel…
