Years later I’d find out this was based on a (still alive!) real guy, which just added layers to it all.

Fisher Price Adventure People 1976

Continuing with this cracker of a catalogue I got from a chain called “Cardinal” (If you didn’t see the previous bed-wetting spread, it’s here). Just like the action figure page, I am in love with their curating of the Fisher Price Toy lines.

I mean, the Little People are incredibly beloved, but this spread of Adventure People is my childhood. If I didn’t have one of these sets on this page, don’t think I didn’t want it!

This was also made more impactful by me being able to track down the boxed Sea Sled this year. This was so well loved in my house.

I don’t remember what this display is for but BAM! this is just my childhood. Bonus nostalgia points for using some of the same clip art as the Mego World’s Greatest Superheroes.

Star Wars Carnival Mirror (eBay Link) —

I miss the age of Carnival Mirrors, also kudos for the seller not doing something embarrassing in the reflection. I’ve seen some terrible things on the Facebook marketplace, me buckos. *Swigs brown liquor from a flask*

Outer Limits Jigsaw Puzzle (eBay Link) —

I really dig the Outer Limits ever since I caught the reruns on the “Chuck the Security Guard” show as a kid. The merchandise is particularly awesome, this puzzle is from the episode “Tourist Attraction.”

Rocky Bubbles Rack Toys (eBay Link) —

Do I need to do a write-up to point out this thing is silly? Nah, you all see it. I love that Popeye cameos though, now there is a fight I’d love to see.

Fisher Price Adventure People 3 Pack (eBay Link) —

I got off the Adventure People train before all the space stuff happened but I do remember liking a lot of their retooled creations. The robot in the middle always seemed like it came out of a Doctor Who from the 60s. That, in my book, makes it awesome.

One of the driving passions behind PlaidStallions is collecting Vintage Toy Store Photos. It’s a beautiful experience to relive those childhood memories, no matter how fleeting they are. I’m very proud of the many images I’ve found over the years, so what better time than December to pick our ten favourites?

Vintage Toy Store Photo- Kenner Star Wars in Macys

Who could resist this impressive shot from 1978 of the “Sci-Fi” section of Macy’s? Filled with not only the hottest Kenner Star Wars items but in the back we have the Ideal STAR TEAM and Mego Micronauts. It truly is a seven-year-old’s dream if you’re me.

Shogun Warriors Store Display

I love everything about this photo; I want to jump into it and buy a complete set of boxed Shogun Warriors and like all the Godzillas. I wanted these badly as a kid, but the folks said no. Now they task me, they task me! *Shakes Fist*

Gimbel’s 1980- Mego Superheroes – Remco Superheroes

Gimbels 1980- Look at all those Minty carded Mego Superheroes, Funstuf Rage Cage Hulks and Remco Energized Spider-Men! I am in heaven.

Mego Superheroes and Adventure Team GI JO

This shot, which I would love to see in colour, is perhaps my favourite of all the photos I’ve found. It’s the closest I’ll get to the Toy Department of the Eaton’s in the Scarborough Town Center as a kid. I remember being in awe of all the art on the GI Joe packaging. That display box of Mego Superheroes also screams childhood to me!

Fisher Price Adventure People

The Fisher Price Adventure People showed up every Christmas like clockwork, and I always loved them. Such an amazing line of toys, non-violent and you weren’t embarrassed by having girl figures. Bring this back, Fisher Price!

A toy aisle in 1986

I’ll admit I was 15 when this photo was taken, but I still visited the toy aisles A LOT (I’ve never stopped), which brings me back. I especially love the Kenner Power of the Force figures being regulated to the bottom for such new figure lines as the Infaceables, GI Joe, Thundercats and Masters of the Universe. I think most if not all of these lines are available at toy stores now. Well, probably not the Infaceables; history was not kind to them.

Aurora Monster Models

There is something so magical about a whole end cap of Glow-in-the-Dark Aurora monster models. I wonder about the value of that display.

Kenner Bionic Man Store Display

Some sweet Bionic Man goodness on display here. Kenner Steve Austin and friends were a Christmas staple for me from 75-78 and a true highlight of being a kid. Those hot pink boxes really popped!

Mattel Slime Store Display

You know, I know it’s just a byproduct of borax, but dammit, I want a can of slime. Always have.

Heroes World Store in NJ 1982

For a kid growing up in a small farm town outside of Toronto, the New Jersey Heroes World stores might as well have been Narnia. I dreamt of going there every time I saw a comic book ad.

Fisher-Price and Lego- 1980 Consumer’s Distributing Catalog

If there is any testament to the power of Fisher-Price toys, it’s the fact that many of the items featured here had serious longevity. I had the three bottom items from the Fisher-Price play family series, namely the Farm, the parking garage and the ferry boat before I went to kindergarten and they’re still available for sale when I’m in the fifth grade. That my friends represent some serious staying power in the toy aisle.

The Fisher-Price Adventure People really hit their stride by this time. I had just about outgrown the series by then but I remember really wanting that submarine and squid. However, the siren call of sci-fi-related toys had won me over.

The 1980 assortment of Lego shows the early days of the mini-figure with the apple of my eye, Space Lego.

Another shot of the dreamy Space Lego boxes. My folks, for some reason just drew the line with this range. I had too much Lego according to them, so I had to settle for playing with the sets the weiner kid down the block had.

1983 Fisher-Price Adventure People Catalog

Fisher-Price Adventure People Catalog From 1983

One of the most influential Action figure lines of the 1970s, the Fisher-Price Adventure People were North America’s first 3 3/4″ line of action figures and vehicles. These durable toys had a great deal of play value and the toy line lasted for nearly a decade, which in the toy industry is a solid win.

Here we have a glimpse at the 1983 Fisher-Price Adventure People catalog where the adventure has more of a sci-fi slant, which is not surprising considering the popularity of Star Wars and Masters of the Universe at that time.

The Alpha Star was a big-ticket item for Fisher-Price Adventure People in 1983, the addition of a space creature was unique to this set. The Alpha Star was a follow-up to the very popular Alpha Probe from the year previous. It is packed with electronic features like its predecessor.

The driver of the truck bears more than a passing resemblance to one Burt Reynolds. The Fisher-Price Adventure People kits were an attempt to get the child to build the vehicle they were about to play with and possibly attract a slightly older child.

The Motor Cross set was made entirely or retooled parts from earlier sets, the man in the cowboy hat is the Ranger from earlier sets while the van is from the “Action news Team” set. The Alpha Probe was electronic, very popular and was offered for a couple of years.

Despite all the Science Fiction in the line, the Adventure people never lost certain themes such as Underwater exploration and racing. These later sets represent a slightly more macho attitude than the sets of the mid-seventies which came with a dolphin instead of a shark.

Many of the individual Fisher-Price Adventure People figures are retooled from earlier sets and made “Spacey”, take a good look and you’ll recognize some of them. They’re now super popular in the “Garage Toy” industry.

Astro Knight used to come with a glider that was a lot of fun. Individually he had very limited articulation.
