Remco AHI ad from 1983

REMCO AHI MAKE IT HAPPEN

I recently found a Hong Trade catalogue from 1983 highlighting the toy manufacturers of the era. I plan to share pages from this book for the rest of the year.

Our first subject is Remco/Azrak Hamway International. At this time, the manufacturing was done by a company called SOMA traders ltd. SOMA is still around today and is likely responsible for some appearances of older AHI tooling showing up as knock-offs.

SGT Rock was one of Remco’s bright spots that year. It was obviously meant to catch some of the heat that GI Joe was enjoying, and it totally worked. In addition to licensed copycat lines, Remco made straight-up RAH Knock-Off lines that are tons of fun.

The Universal Monsters figures were still a seller for Remco at this point, although this would be their final year. The Monsters action figure license would next land at Imperial Toys.

Remco Beaver Patrol

I’m going to assume that a lot of these toys employed recycled tooling. Remco may have been the leading “Label Slap” toy company before the name was sold to Azrak-Hamway in 1973.

Also, I want to highlight the glib use of the word “Mod” on toys of that era. What exactly makes a pup tent “Mod?”

I can’t believe I’ve gone this long without an official Beaver Patrol Utility set! I must remedy this post haste.

I’m not sure how well these toys sold but I’d like to think Remco was also working on an “Official Bikini Inspector” line which included a box of bikinis, a magnifying glass and a rubber stamp. I stole this joke from Bruce McCollough. 

Mego Meet 2024 will be hosted this August 17-18 at Zolo-Con. We’ll have our own dealer area, panels, customs contests for the kids and late night swap meets in the Mego Suite.

Mego Superheroes in Japanese Starlog

This page makes me weak in the knees and it’s not just the gem-mint carded Mego Riddler on display. Those Mego Comic Action Heroes’ deluxe sets with the Batmobile and Spider-Car are big favourites of mine. I also don’t have that AHI parachuting Superman.

This lovely ad uses the dreaded “D” word; everybody run! As a kid, I did chicken out of buying a Mego Catwoman because I feared my friends seeing a girl doll. I regret that behaviour to this day. I use the term “Man-Dolls” with sarcastic pride, and so should you.

Toy-Ventures and PlaidStallions present a new line of limited-edition collector pins: Monsters, Knock-Off action figures and Brick Mantooth.

This page contains many happy memories, especially the Mego Spider-Car, Corgi Jrs and those awesome 12″ Mego Superheroes, see below for my video on the 12″ Superman range. 

As a kid, I only ever saw Superhero t-shirts in ads like this. I would have loved a Captain America and never dreamed of seeing a Thor. Strange, now I can’t leave the house without seeing a Superhero t-shirt. I actually stopped wearing them.

The Superhero belt buckles were a Heroes World Staple, as are those Sunglasses by Nasta. The Superhero record case is another old friend of mine. 

I loved those Treasury Edition-sized colouring books of the Superheroes by Whitman and have featured them here before. Those Hasbro art sets are another item I was unaware of as a child.

The glorious Rack Toys by AHI are only eclipsed for me by the Chemtoy Spider-Man web maker, a very happy afternoon of play.

I had those Superhero sheets at the bottom, and I still use them. Amazing how far the Janex Batman alarm clock got, it seemed to be everywhere.

• 1978 Remco Toys Catalog

In 1978, Remco, a division of Azrak Hamway International, figured out a way to get in on the Superhero action figure business long-held onto by their rivals at Mego. That would prove to be the centerpiece of the 1978 Remco Toys Catalog.

Energized Spiderman was more statue than action figure (most likely due to licensing restrictions) but he was a giant hit in 1978 and the line was greatly expanded in the following year.

The rest of the lineup was strongly superhero-based, even Mickey Mouse looks like he can kick some ass, the sole girl’s offering this year is Jeannie, who also had magical powers.

Energized Spider-Man was a really big coup for Remco/AHI, it allowed them to get into the Superhero action figure market, even though technically he’s an inaction figure.

“Spider-Man’s Worst Enemy” could go either way really, I always liked Energized Green Goblin, such a nice addition. The Spider-Copter is one for the gallery of toys that don’t make sense.

As I was saying, more Spider-Man Helicopter lunacy, it didn’t matter when you’re eight but now it’s just plain strange.

Batman and Spiderman were all about ray pistols, that Phaser is freaking sweet, however.

The Batcopter and Enterprise make so much sense and are such desirable toys..

Wonder Woman was a popular set when I was a kid, the Batman and Star Trek sets were must have and I even accept the Spider-Man set seeing as he did carry-around stuff but Mickey Mouse? What did he need in his utility belt, tissues?.

System 7 I know almost nothing about but that Batman Trik Trak harkens back to the days of the ’66 Bat Merchandising Hey Day..

Boring Toy History lesson: The “I Dream of Jeannie” license was also considered by Mego who made some neat-o design drawings before abandoning the concept.

By the mid-1980s, Remco had abandoned the name AHI (Azrak-Hamway International) and the business of selling Rack Toys. Their output during this period consisted of licensed items such as the Karate Kid or AWA Wrestling or homegrown toy lines meant to ape the popularity of bigger brands. During the 80s, Remco copied lines such as GI Joe, Masters of the Universe, My Little Pony, and Transformers.

1987 Remco Toys Catalog Karate Kid- The Karate Kid license was Remco’s big push for 1987 and it was a big hit. We’re working on a piece for Toy-Ventures magazine about the genesis of this line right now.

U.S. Forces were one of many G.I. Joe RAH knock-off lines that Remco put out during the 1980s, the toys were often found at K-Mart stores and usually priced much lower than the name brand. They are now highly collectible.

U.S. Forces multi figure packs were one of the greater appeals to the line.

Remco really capitalized on the Ninja craze of the 1980s, with a line of both 5.5″ Ninjas (but hey that one guy is just Rambo, nice try) and a line of 3 3/4″ RAH O Ring style figures. I wonder what “Actionized” means?

AWA Wrestling was Remco’s way of capitalizing on the WWF craze of the 1980s by licensing one of their competitors, some of these characters would later join the WWF like the Freebirds, Shawn Michaels and the Road Warriors. This toy line is highly collectible now.

Mini figures of wrestlers and ninjas, no license required that’s a lot of fun for a buck.

Oh sure, the Real Ghostbusters action figure license was taken by Kenner but hey, nobody’s going after that sweet, sweet phone money. I really hope that Remco’s sales pitch for this was “How you gonna call?”.

1977 saw the introduction of Mickey Mouse to the fold and more Superhero related products which would eventually become the bread and butter of the company for the rest of the decade..

New this year was the Remco Disney Action Figures. The McDonalds characters were not the runaway sales hit that AHI expected them to be, according to sources they were a sales disappointment..

Utility belts were a big winner for Remco, this year’s assortment featured Space:1999, a big-budget science fiction series that hoped to rival Star Trek. Every year Remco released a Utility belt that made no sense, this year it was the Mickey Mouse, why am I disturbed at the sight of him in jeans?

The Batman Trik-Trak set harkened back to the 1960s Batman craze, Remco would continue to mine Superheroes for the next few years.
