Back to the days when Super Hero shirts were tough to find and mainly came in kid’s sizes. Despite all the Super Hero antics, my eyes immediately went to the Marx Big Wheel shirt. It seems to be a swipe of the Artwork Jack Davis did for the Marx Catalog. The Fonz was a Super Hero of sorts I guess.

The presence of Shazam in the Super Heroes section is likely due to the Filmation TV series, and it’s the shirt I would have picked. Also, I’d still wear Shazam socks if I could.

In 1977, Marx Toys launched the Ready Gang, a beautifully detailed line of 9″ action figures from the old west with little to no back story (Seriously, are these guys, outlaws, or good guys? I guess it’s up to the kid?) and it lasted two years before fading away.

My best guess is the line’s intention as additional characters to the popular Gabriel Toys Lone Ranger line. However, this is very late for Western action figures, making it somewhat curious.

The series consisted of three characters, the Sundown kid, Ringo and Trooper Gibson.

Their designs seem influenced by “Spaghetti” Western films, particularly Sundown and Ringo. Trooper Gibson is a rarity as most Western toy lines did not feature people of colour.

Marx Ready Gang

Marx went all out on this line, creating horses and a western town for the Ready Gang. These toys sold well enough in 1977 to warrant a proposed expansion to the range in 1978, including new characters, horses and a wagon. It was, however, not meant to be, and the Marx Ready Gang would fade away after two short years.

Marx Safari Adventure Action Figures Catalog 1975

Louis Marx’s 1975 Toy Line “Safari Adventure” followed the trend of sport adventure put forward by G.I. Joe and Big Jim (Fisher-Price would release the Adventure People Safari this same year) but unlike the others, their line strictly focused on it.

Marx Safari Adventure was a well-made and quite intricate series of figures and playsets very close to the Mego scale that follows the exploits of Buck Hunter, Kim the photographer and Sgt. Kogo is their guide as they roam (what I would imagine) the wilds of Africa. Barely known in the collector markets, this toy line is worth a second look:

Marx Safari Adventure included a menagerie of animals for Buck and his team to hunt I suppose? There is a mention of Gorilla but it is not shown but it appears to have been made.

Our heroes Buck Hunter, Kim and Sgt. Kogo came well equipped. The figures had an action lever that moved their arms via a knob on the back. It was rare for Marx to include fabric clothes (or as it’s known in the toy industry “Soft Goods”) with their action figures. The Tent Playset looks fun and I keep thinking it would be fun to have these guys mix it up with Mego Tarzan. 

Marx Safari Adventure was a well-thought-out line including a whole universe for kids to explore. I guess the cage means that Buck is here to capture, not kill. Phew! I’m finding myself wanting some of these toys now.

The line was impressively packaged and displayed, I can’t imagine seeing that display wouldn’t have enticed me to get into this line as a kid. However, I never ran into it, it’s really neat!

The line was bulging with characters this year and the figures now had “Quick Draw Action” which was pretty neat. Someone still needs to explain how they got a jeep back in the old west…..

Nothing like an atmospheric gun fight shot to start your catalog, the child to the right is illustrated by the great Jack Davis, he did a few Marx Catalogs.

Johnny’s cast of characters had really grown in 1975.

These store displays are amazing, the only thing I remember seeing on a shelf was the carry case..

These weird Water Pistols remind me of something put out by AHI. If you use coca cola instead of water, it’ll look like they’re spitting chewin’ tabbacky!
