Knock-Off King

When I started collecting Mego-scaled Knock-Offs, I knew there was at least one Elvis out there, but since then, I’ve been on my third bootleggy iteration of Mr. The Pelvis.

My latest, “The King,” is my most original and new favourite. He’s a 9″ doll with a unique head sculpt (which isn’t bad, all things considered), some truly interesting clothes, and a blow-moulded body in gold and red. It’s probably a recycled Ultra-Man bootleg.

While I’m probably certain that this was just done out of a complete lack of care, that extra bit of irony puts a perfect bow on why I love collecting this crap. What commemorates Elvis better than a hilariously badly made toy that doesn’t give his estate a penny?

Mego Meet 2024 will be hosted this August 17-18 at Zolo-Con. We’ll have our own dealer area, panels, customs contests for the kids and late night swap meets in the Mego Suite.

Explosive new gallery added to the PlaidStallions Action Figure Archive today, The Adventurer!

The Adventurer seems to have been spawned in the early 1970s and is heavily influenced by the Mego Action Jackson toy line.

The figures themselves appear to be a blow-molded 8″ figure of Tommy Gunn ( Gunn was a UK take on G.I. Joe and many would argue, a knock-off himself) but the strange thing is, many of his outfits sets are from Mego themselves.

Many of The Adventurer’s sets appear to be Mego products in a new package with the clothing actually having Mego tags (also see the Lincoln International Thrill Seekers for this). While other sets seem to be original creations that never factored in the Mego Action Jackson line.

Mego did not own their own factories when they launched Action Jackson, so it is quite possible that their contracted manufacturer merely sold products out two different doors. Which was fairly common for Hong Kong in the 1970s.

PlaidStallions Action Figure Archive

Been spending a lot of time updating the Plaid Stallions Action Figure Archive and have a few fun updates thanks to some awesome people helping me out.

Let’s dig in shall we?

Our newest page to the Action Figure Archive is the Krazy Kreeps. Krazy Kreeps are a unique find, they are essentially a knock-off of a knock-off! The figures mainly use the bodies and heads from the AHI World Famous Super Monsters brand, which was already a Mego Knock Off. There is a morbid little detail with the Krazy Kreeps that would not fly today.

Croner Buck Rogers Gallery now has Twiki thanks to Clam’s ToyBox. These weird Australian figures have stymied me for years and now I have to wonder if there is a fourth figure. It’s just great to see all of them in one place. 

Speaking of Croner, my friend Will (@toltoyskid) turned me on to the Footy Heroes, figures of Australian Rugby players. I don’t normally have much to do with sports figures but I need to know what else they made. Also, I have no idea who these guys are.

New update to the Bugmen of Insecta page, thanks to Clam’s Toybox. These vehicles are super rare, I wasn’t sure they ever got made.  A truly obscure 80s toy line that deserves more attention.

Hasbro Super Joe

Added some new pics and information to our Hasbro Super Joe page at the Action Figure Archive.

I have a real fondness for this short-lived but unique toy line by Hasbro, most people at the time didn’t even realize it was supposed to be G.I. Joe, this is mainly because he’s eight inches tall. 

G.I. Joe was getting killed by smaller competitors like Big Jim and the Mego World’s Greatest Superheroes, so they shrunk him down to Mego size and sent him to space. What resulted was a fun toy line that just sold well for the first year thanks to Star Wars but laid an egg in the second, thanks to Star Wars toys finally landing on shelves.

So come celebrate the Adventures of Super Joe, The Shield, Darkon and Gor, King of the Terrons in the Hasbro Super Joe gallery.

The Croner Buck Rogers action figure line is one of the more curious toy lines as Australia is the only place in the world to have two competing action figure lines for Buck Rogers, Croner and Mego.

Are these made by Mego? It’s not known but they sure look similar, more at the Plaid Stallions Action Figure Archive.

Crime Busters come out of the United Kingdom and seem to from the late 70s or early 1980s. They one of many Knock Off series that make use of discarded or left-over suits from Ideal’s Captain Action. This kind of item popped up until the mid-1980s.

The figures themselves appear to be lower quality knock-offs of Tommy Gunn ( Gunn was a UK take on G.I. Joe and many would argue, a knock-off himself) all adorned with a Crime Buster logo and a white version of what appears to be a Batman take. Not a bad way to spend your 99 pence.

Hey everyone, I’m excited to announce that I’ve finally gotten the swing of this WordPress thing, thanks to some very good friends’ advice (thank you, Robyn and Aaron).

So, I’m able to bring the Action Figure Archive  and information into a more browser-friendly format and obviously add things to them from my recent Toy-Ventures publications. This is what I love to do and I’m super excited to get back to work. Look for galleries on some of my favourite toy lines of the 70s-80s and tons from my Knock-Off Collection.

So, to kick things off, may I present the new Matchbox Fighting Furies Archive and Gallery. I honestly think this toy line is a work of art and one that needs to be celebrated, so it excited me to launch the new Archive with this one.
