Mattel Mega Force Catalog

MegaForce was poised to be the action blockbuster of 1982. The 20 million dollar Chinese/American co-production had an impressive marketing budget which wisely targeted kids with it’s sci-fi military stunt show of a movie.

It also easily found licensors; on paper, this looked like a slam dunk.

The only problem was that people eventually saw “MegaForce” and found its campiness, lacklustre effects and weird thumb-kissing scenes very much bad.

There are rumours that Mattel had MegaForce action figures in the works, but for Toyfair in 1982, they wisely regulated the offering to Hot Wheels items. This way, they highlighted the film’s true stars, the vehicles. No offense to Michael Beck (Warriors rules!)

The Verti-Bird is another item that Mattel has repurposed for several licenses including Space:1999 and Battlestar Galactica.

The biggest investment Mattel seems to have put into Mega Force is tooling 3 new vehicles from the film and repurposing some stock cars into the line.

I mean, the only thing missing from this is macrame and a fresh pot of Chicory brewing.

However, the more curious thing is the selection of toys for a 1978 catalog, a weird mix of stuff from 1977 and years earlier and a couple of glaring omissions.

The top toys here would be Pulsar and Electroman, and Zogg; both toys debuted in 1977 and were actively available so it’s no surprise to see them. The lack of Pulsar’s nemesis Hypnos is a bit strange but not the strangest thing in this toy catalog.

Six Million Dollar Man was kind of a fixture in toy catalogs even in it’s last year so that’s not surprising, Shindana’s Dr. J was also fairly current but Mego’s Muhammad Ali toys came out in 1976 and were discontinued by 1978.

Mego Micronauts were a hot toy in 1978, so it’s no surprise to see Biotron, although it’s weird he’s all alone. The Mattel Welcome Back Kotter series is another line that was discontinued by then. This deluxe classroom was likely a way of closing out unsold figures.

Both Evel Knievel and Fonzie were available but were in the last years of production. Most of these toys made their debut 2-4 years previously.

Finally, we have Stretch Monster (1977) and Stretch Armstrong (1976) which were staples of this kind of Service Merchandise/Consumers Distributing type store.

What’s interesting about this catalogue is what isn’t there, no Kenner Star Wars, No Mego Superheroes, No Mego KISS, Kenner Bionic Woman. It’s weird.

If you had a Monroe store in your area, please let me know what kind of store it was. Was it a closeout store? I need closure on this weird toy catalog.

My love of the Mego Superheroes is got me into this whole website mess, to begin with. Here we see the basic assortment that would last until the line’s demise in 1982, Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, and Hulk. For more information on Mego Superheroes Check out the Galleries of the MEGO MUSEUM.

The “Star Wars” Play-Doh is the sole item in this flyer, which is strange considering it’s 1978! The Fisher-Price puzzle puppy is a very iconic piece as are the Playskool Superman puzzles which are kind of obscured..

Vintage plush, nameless yet eerily familiar, pretty sure I had some of these.

It’s not surprising to see the Monster Squad board game going for $1.17 by this time the show had been off the air for months. Hanna Barbera’s “Skate Birds” was on the air at this time but it would only last a single season.

Tonka Trucks really haven’t changed all that much, just ownership I guess. Where has that ping pong rifle been all my life?
