Ben Cooper Dr. Strange Halloween Costume (eBay Affiliate Link) __

Doctor Strange got some merch in the late 1970s and early 1980s, likely due to his 1978 CBS TV movie that did not go to series. The Ben Cooper merch (including the Jigger) has this weirdly angry face for some reason. I think it works, but I have always pictured the character as a cool cucumber.

The middle 70s explosion of Shadow Merchandise, primarily from the Toymaker/Pharmaceutical company “Madison Industries,” is one that perplexes me. However, the toys also are really cool, so it evens out.

EBAY LINK Logan’s Run Farrah Fawcett Towel

There really isn’t enough Logan’s Run merchandise out there and honestly, there will never be enough for me. I do, however, have a soft spot for stuff like this towel, which is obviously meant to cash more in on the popularity of Farrah than the movie. I just don’t know what I’d do with it…

EBAY LINK The Shadow Colouring Book-

The Shadow is, of course, a wonderful radio and pulp character from my Grandfather’s day, he got some unusual merchandise in the middle 70s and this book is one of those out-of-place items that I’ve actually featured on this blog. This is an amazing price BTW.

EBAY LINK Destination Moon Base Alpha Poster-  So sometime in the late 1970s, two episodes of Space:1999 were merged together and released theatrically because…star wars. I own this poster, it’s one of my prized possessions, it’s just so gorgeous and exciting. You owe it to yourself to see Martin Landau every day.

EBAY LINK Argentinian LP featuring Wonder Woman, Star Wars and Charlies Angels. Look, I have no idea with this is about but look at that cover, I want to see that movie.

EBAY LINK Action Man Solar Hurricane– This is actually a Kenner Six Million Dollar Man vehicle but it was repurposed for the wonderful Action Man space line, which also included ROM Space Knight. I love foreign toys and variations like this.

Looking at this selection of adult t-shirts,  I’m amazed by a few things 1) How much merchandise based on “The Shadow” was made in the mid 1970s 2) The whole CB thing and 3) Sears clearly owes Robert Crumb some money.

I think Cher’s tenure at Mego burned brightly but not for a long time, she’s already a good deal in 1977.

This ad for Madison Industries Shadow Toys is the first I’ve ever seen.

Mego’s Starsky and Hutch were a hot license at the time but Wards wasn’t offering a special on Captain Dobey? Who was going to yell at them?

We got lots of cops in 1977, here are LJN’s Rookies and S.W.A.T on sale. One year later it’d all be about droids.

Barbie was the absolute queen of the fashion dolls in ’77, many tried to take her crown but she bested the Chers and Dustys of the world.

Ideal’s Jaws Game is one of the most iconic game concepts of the 1970s.

This first batch shows the large child size on the left, and the small child size on the right.




The large child has a slanted slouch hat, and a sewn-on Shadow red scarf, made out of rayon. The sleeves and legs are black





The young child one has more of an Inspector Clouseau-ish hat. The scarf is molded on and painted. The legs are purple. Neither costume comes with a cape in this version.

This above costume is by far the best, it says large child or adult. It comes with a screen printed body suit with great graphics, the slouch hat mask, slightly larger than before, and a red vinyl scarf. And best of all, a large vinyl black cape.

This next costume is also called "large child-teenager to adult". But must have been more budget minded.


gain we have the larger slouch hat mask. Vinyl scarf again. But this time the costume is just a cape, similar to the Ben Cooper "smock costumes". The Shadow appears as a smaller graphic on the front of the cape, and not full-bodied, which is a little cheap. But-- notice a nice little detail: the cape is edged with red piping on the underside to resemble the pulps and comics!
