When I turned six, my grandmother let me tag along with her to Eatons (RIP) to pick out one thing for my birthday. She left me in the toy aisle for probably a half an hour while she went to the credit department. It is one of my fondest childhood memories, looking through all those crazy GI Joe, Big Jim and Mego Superhero packages, just leisurely drinking it all in. I saw some crazy stuff, like Cowboy outfits for Joe that I would later find out were exclusive to Canada. Anyway, I chose this, which, to me, is the coolest Joe set ever. You’ve got a parachute and a giant spider. It still sets my brain afire.

Microman Lady Command figure (sponsored Link) 

Thanks to the Super 7 Micronauts figures, I’ve been in a real Micronaut mood lately. This is a Micronaut Mego didn’t bring to the states, the female version of the Pharoid instead, her time chamber is the Statue of Liberty. I wouldn’t have bought this at ten but OMG I’ll take one now.  The above is a vintage one, but reproductions are cheap and abundant. 

Popeye the movie Colorforms (sponsored link)

I’ve probably said this before, but I unabashedly love this movie, I know it’s flawed, and its production involved mountains of Cocaine (never tried), but I was ten when I saw it at the Oshawa Center. Call it my personal  “Goonies,” ok? However, I’m aware it’s not for everyone. I like Harry Nilsson’s music, adore Shelly Duvall, and love comedic violence. Plus, Donald Moffat was REM on “Logan’s Run.” That’s all I got.

Whenever I mention colorforms, I also like to say that toy designer Mel Birnkrant shares all his knowledge. He probably has an anecdote about this set if you ask him on the book face, I wish more toy people were like Mel.

Cool as hell Spider-Man shirt from the 1970s (sponsored link) —

This kid’s shirt blows my mind, mainly for the appearance of (weirdly drawn) Man-Wolf! I was really drawn to these types of monster characters as a kid (Man-Bat fans represent!) so seeing them on merch always makes me smile.

My prior cons (SDCC and MegoMeet/Zolocon) both had problematic beginnings (I have severe travel anxiety) and well, now I have a complete set. It took me over an hour and 10,000 steps to find my pass, as every volunteer sent me a different way. Once inside, I would compound this issue by not knowing where the theatre was (shame on me.)

I was late, lost, and stuck in a massive, slow-moving crowd (another nightmare I frequently have.) I began to panic.

My friend Sam phoned me from the panel and, unbeknownst to me, shared our conversation with the audience; he ingeniously made it part of the panel. He tried hard to guide me, but being vision impaired, he was unable to find me himself. A voice piped up on the phone saying, “I’ll find him,” and Sam handed his phone to the man who said, “Look for the guy dressed as Spider-Man!” Which made me chuckle, at a con, that’s like look for the guy with a nerdy t-shirt.

As I made my way down, I asked the first guy dressed as Spider-Man if he was “looking for a Brian,” and he was! He led me to the panel, where a very sweaty, anxious man got a hero’s welcome thanks to Sam’s crowd warm-up skills.

I wish I had the time to set up a camera, but we gave 25 minutes of the tightest comedy we’ve ever done. It was infectious and wonderful. In less than an hour, I went from wanting to cry to… well…wanting to cry for better reasons. My sincerest thanks to that audience; you were INCREDIBLE!

Spider-Man joined us on stage and never revealed his secret identity. All I know is this was his first cosplay, and yes, he was quite hot in that get-up.

I cannot think of a better allegory for this summer; I’ve had some real lows and some incredible highs. Despite some of the troubles, conflicts and disappointments, every experience ended with me being glad I came.

“The PlaidStallions Summer Tour” was not financially successful ( I knew that going in), but it was the best thing I could have done for my mental health and well-being.

After the panel, I sat with Sam (a true warrior of the convention scene) and watched him give the same enthusiasm to each Sunday afternoon table visitor he probably had on the first day. His voice was gone by this point, but he kept talking away.

I said, “I did three of these things, and I’m exhausted; I don’t know how you keep going every other weekend.” His answer was “I latch on to the people with good energy and enjoy the conversation, it’s like a recharge.”

That stuck with me. I’ve always been public about my struggles with depression and anxiety, and I’ve been in some dark spaces. However, this past summer has taught me that if you show good people some kindness, they will return it in droves. Thank you everybody for this summer who popped by and made my worldview better, I can hope I did the same.

Remco AHI ad from 1983

REMCO AHI MAKE IT HAPPEN

I recently found a Hong Trade catalogue from 1983 highlighting the toy manufacturers of the era. I plan to share pages from this book for the rest of the year.

Our first subject is Remco/Azrak Hamway International. At this time, the manufacturing was done by a company called SOMA traders ltd. SOMA is still around today and is likely responsible for some appearances of older AHI tooling showing up as knock-offs.

SGT Rock was one of Remco’s bright spots that year. It was obviously meant to catch some of the heat that GI Joe was enjoying, and it totally worked. In addition to licensed copycat lines, Remco made straight-up RAH Knock-Off lines that are tons of fun.

The Universal Monsters figures were still a seller for Remco at this point, although this would be their final year. The Monsters action figure license would next land at Imperial Toys.

Col Sanders Action Figure in car (eBay Link)-–

This is from a larger playset, but if I saw this at an antique mall, it would HAVE to come home with me. Like the Hamburglar, the Col. rocks my world. Although I can’t remember the last time I ate there.

Wow this is just a big old bunch of childhood! I remember this wave at my local variety store, I mainly fixated on the superhero stuff, I had forgotten about Baseball. 

FunStuf Spider-Man Webshooter and Hulk Flying Fist (eBay Link) —

These are rack toy royalty to me and I can’t believe I don’t own a set. The web shooter I’ve wanted since the Heroes World ad days. Although, I did cool on it after I was told that it couldn’t possibly support my weight. 

World of Sid and Marty Krofft Souvenir (eBay Link) —

Another item from the fabled indoor amusement park that I never got to visit. This is pretty brilliant, the Krofft version of mouse ears.

Filmation Freedom Force Animation Cel (eBay Link) —

My passion for the Filmation series “Tarzan and the Super 7” is unlimited.  I especially loved the Freedom Force, a Justice League of Filmation’s superheroes led by Isis. If this had Super Samurai, it would be hanging in my basement.

Ourways Studios produced some of the wildest superhero merch in the 70’s, best known for their awesome stickers and decals their product features art by some of the true greats like Neal Adams and John Romita. There was something so incredibly cool about a time when a company could have both the Marvel and DC license…..

It’s hard to believe those large stickers only wholesaled at $0.90 bringing their retail cost to under $2.00, that’s value!

I’m a grown man but can’t get over the term “Super Dumps”. I’d be surprised if any of these amazing bins survived to this day.

The Joint Action Heroes were heavily advertised in Comic Books at the time, at one point I think Our Way also licensed Planet of the Apes. Seeing that Wonder Woman in the baggie like that always makes me laugh, I’m really immature….

These Jointed Giants are fantastic representations of the classic giants of the industry.

These puffy stickers illustrate the one thing I really like about Our Ways product, not only do you get the major characters but the second string as well, Iron Man, Aquaman, heck even Luke Cage got a sticker from Our Way.

These stand-ups always catch my eye on Ebay, such beautiful representations of the characters, I can’t really spot artists like some can but I spy some Infantino and Adams in there.

I never saw this display at retail as a kid but I might freak if I had. Remember when toy companies could put Spider-Man and Batman on the same display? I miss those days….

Many of the characters chosen for the line were based on television shows that US children had never seen .

The line was beautiful but also premium priced due to high costs of importation, I certainly remember drooling over the GoDaikins at my local hobby shop but they were on the top shelf and over $75(!).

This catalog is from 1984, a year when the line would be overshadowed by two competing Japanese lines being marketed in America, Transformers by Hasbro and GoBots by Tonka, both of which were lower priced and had slick marketing campaigns, including animated series. 

As with a lot of unappreciated toy lines, GoDaikins command a high value on the secondary market and are highly collectible.

It’s interesting to note that this catalog has a transforming robot right on the cover, as that would be the hottest toys of Christmas 1984.

Lightspeed Electroid Albegas (光速電神アルベガス, Kōsoku Denjin Arubegasu) is an anime series that aired from 1983 to 1984 in Japan, Latin America, Spain and Italy. According the many, this was the least popular item in this line.

Kagaku Sentai Dynaman (科学戦隊ダイナマン, Kagaku Sentai Dainaman) is the seventh installment of Toei Company’s Super Sentai show and a direct ancestor to Power Rangers, it also saw broadcast in the United States however it was a parody series under the Night Flight banner.

Chōdenji Machine Voltes V (Japanese: 超電磁マシーン ボルテスVファイブ, Hepburn: Chōdenji Mashīn Borutesu Faibu, lit. “Super Electromagnetic Machine Voltes V”), popularly known simply as Voltes V (pronounced as ”Voltes Five”) is a Japanese anime television series produced by Toei Animation and Nippon Sunrise. It is the second installment of the Robot Romance Trilogy, which also includes Chōdenji Robo Combattler V and Tōshō Daimos. It is directed by Tadao Nagahama and produced by Yoshiyuki Tomino. It aired on TV Asahi from June 4, 1977 to March 25, 1978.

GOLION (百獣王ゴライオン, Hyaku Jūō Goraion, The King of Hundred Beasts GoLion) is known to most US children as Voltron and from what i understand was the most popular seller. I’m not sure how this affected Matchbox who was also bringing in Voltron toys.

Gordian Warrior (闘士ゴーディアン, Tōshi Gōdian) is a Japanese anime television series that aired in 1979 to 1981. It is also referred to as Champion of Gordian or Gardian

Denshi Sentai Denjiman (電子戦隊デンジマン, Denshi Sentai Denjiman) is Toei’s fourth entry to its Super Sentai metaseries. It was broadcast from February 2, 1980 to January 31, 1981. The title given to this series for international distribution by Toei is Denjiman, Electric Fighters.

Daitetsujin 17  (大鉄人１７, Daitetsujin Wan-Sebun) is a 1977 tokusatsu series created by Shotaro Ishinomori and produced by Toei. It revolves around a giant battle robot commanded by a young boy who fights the giant robots of an evil organization bent on world conquest. It was released in North America as “Brain 17” but directly to video by Playhouse in the mid 1980s.

Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan (太陽戦隊サンバルカン Taiyō Sentai San Barukan, translated into English as Solar Squadron Sun Vulcan) is Toei’s fifth entry to its Super Sentai series. It is a direct predacessor to Power Rangers and Popy also created a series of  World Heroes figures based on the show.

Dai Sentai Goggle-V (大戦隊ゴーグルファイブ, Dai Sentai Gōguru Faibu, also called Dai Sentai Goggle Five)[Note 1] is a Japanese tokusatsu television series. It is yet another predecessor to what would largely be known as “Power Rangers” in North America.

Tetsujin 28 was better known as Gigantor to North American kids, although in 1984 most kids probably wouldn’t have been as familiar with him.

Tōshō Daimos (闘将ダイモス, Tōshō Daimosu, “Fighting General Daimos”) is a Japanese anime television series produced by Toei Animation and Sunrise. Daimos saw release as part of the Mattel Shogun Warriors line as well.

 Leopardon is the giant Mech that belongs to Spider-Man in Japan, based on Toei’s popular take on the character. Leopardon also had a cameo in the Shogun Warriors line.
