Normally I’d buy this piece of history and transfer it but it’s been a pricey week and I’ve already bought three reels. The seller also has the Kenner Maskatron commercial reel as well.

Mego Elastic Superman (eBay link)–

I think these things are both dumb and awesome. I mean a stretchable Superman may make sense for a Red Kryptonite story but not for a toy. Another thing is these toys were simply not made to last people. It’s like buying something that will break your heart.

Sorry that got melancholy, i tragically lost my Supes to leakage a few years back….

Larami Captain America Pistol Rack Toy (eBay Link)–

I featured this in Rack Toys but I’m working on a presentation about weird Superhero merchandise and this one is a favourite. Cap is packing a Luger, a cover swipe from Captain America 164, and the company whitewashed Night Shade!

70s Shazam marvel Family T-Shirt (eBay Link)

I am always surprised when I look through 70s clothing; there is always a t-shirt or pyjama top that I’ve seen before. Case in point: this awesome Robb Roy shirt of the Marvel Family fighting mythical beasts.

Hasbro Wonder Woman board game (eBay Link) —

Hasbro made three different Wonder Woman board games over ten years; this is the “middle child” landing in 1974. It’s the one I’ve seen the least, and I dig its funky off-model artwork.

Toy-Ventures Magazine Issue 10

Issue 10 starts with a stunning piece of art by Peter Carsillo, who told me he’d do a Pulsar cover ages ago should the need arise. So when I reached out, we began to explore concepts. When the idea of a movie poster came up, I mentioned “Infra-Man” probably because I was staring at it while messaging him.

Just from that, Peter crafted a Basil Gogos-inspired movie poster for a Pulsar movie that, sadly I cannot watch. I also want to point out that I will get that movie made or die trying.

My favourite thing about this is the “Pulsar Universe” Peter brought to life here. A bevy of beauties, a fleet of vehicles but also adding the ironic twist that they all are repurposed from other Mattel toylines. That is…Chef’s Kiss toy satire, and I love it. There are a couple of other toy easter eggs in there that I will leave for you to find them all.

According to Mattel, Pulsar was the “Ultimate Man of Adventure”. I still want to know what his back story is, is he some sort of cyborg? a Mutant? None of this mattered as a kid, I really wanted him!

I recently came across this wonderful article about action figures circa 1977, it mentions Micronauts, Pulsar, Metal Man, Electroman, Stretch Monster, Shogun Warriors and their impact on the toy market place. It features interviews with not only toy buyers but toy makers from Hasbro, Mego, Zee Toys and Mattel.

Seeing as these are things that haunt my dreams 40 years later, I thought it might be of interest to all of you, read on after the jump!

6: PULSAR (MATTEL) 


 When faced with the overwhelming popularity of Steve Austin, Mattel decided not to play in the Cyborg sandbox at all but went sideways and made an all organic superhero. 


 That’s pretty clever, combating steak with a vegan alternative, as a bonus, Pulsar was super gross to look at which is a bonus for young boys. 


Mattel sold the character for two years and didn’t pay anybody a dime in licensing.

It’s been a long while since i printed up some new PS trading cards, mostly because of spending my time with Rack Toys (still available!) but this month I resolved to make some new entries. 

The first is card #40, the Whip from the Big Jim’s Wolfpack line of toys. I had been doing the members of this team since the start and recently we started a Big Jim collector forum at the MegoMuseum, so it was fresh in mind and a fun image.

I wasn’t even planning to do Pulsar’s enemy Hypnos as a card but when I came across this image, it just felt right. Although I’m sorry I didn’t have time to correct the boo-boo in the corner, it adds to the charm of card #41. Pulsar was card #3 of this series, so you can make them fight i guess.

So it’s a double shot from Mattel!

These just arrived so they’ll start going out with orders,  given away at toy shows and as prizes here.
