This is one of those things that I don’t get about myself. I don’t really collect Star Wars and have none of the other 12″, and yet, I have always wanted this thing. I suppose it’s the Mexican toy charm (big fan!), combined with my lifelong love for the Kenner action figure.  My folks got me one early from a gift show in ’78. I’d not seen Star Wars and wasn’t sure how significant a role he played. I was let down when I discovered he wasn’t much of a character.

Do I even need to say this is a Karate Kid Knock-Off figure? I probably didn’t, but this one has got the whole “ironic title” thing going on.

Sure, you can use the Homer Simpson “in modern slang, “bad” can mean “good” defence, but I’m going to decide in favour of comedy. 

An alternate theory is that this is a comedy, and there’s a Brazilian cartoon show where these guys get beaten up every week. I’d watch that…

LJN RoadStars “The Waltons” diecast truck —-(sponsored link)

A lot of people give Mego crap about licensing the Waltons, but they weren’t the only ones making John Boy merch. Case in point, LJN thought this would get noticed in a series that contained the Space:1999 Eagle, the Mystery Machine and Fred Flinstone’s car? I was going to say this was the peg warmer in this line, but the smart money is on the Hogan’s Heroes “bad guy” car.

Universal Studios Hulk Postcard

My lifelong obsession with this tour is justified when I see a postcard featuring a “Fake Ferrigno” and Frankenstein in one shot.

I featured Dinosaurs, so I have to give equal time to giant apes. It’s a law that I think came to me in a dream. I can’t tell you how much I love bootleg Kongs, both in film and toy form. I love them more than licensed ones. This one has a super cool header card that looks nicked from somewhere else, and I’m pretty sure this sculpt began life as a licensed Japanese Kong toy. Lili Ledy was a Mexico-based toy maker with a 30-year run until its closure in 1985.

Due to trade restrictions, the company would manufacture it’s toys on Mexican soil. Even popular Hong Kong-made American toys like GI Joe, Star Wars and Mego Superheroes had to have their Mexican-made equivalent.

This restriction resulted in some fantastic and imaginative-looking variations on what we’re familiar with.

1975 was an excellent year for Lili Ledy with several hot toys and licenses:

The cover for this catalogue featured the newly acquired Mego Superheroes. I can’t tell you how much collecting Mexican Mego figures meant to me in the late 90s. It was like discovering them all over again. Then like a lot of things, it got kind of competitive and I moved on to other things.

I’m pretty sure Bob and Joy were not based on American toys but an original creation of Ledy.

Don Cuco is the much less creepy version of Tommy Talker.

I love that they dressed a kid up like Pebbles Flinstone. 

We’re making collectible pins featuring many of the toys we celebrate and characters from this site.

Kenner’s Turbo Tower of Power and SSP sets were very popular.

Love the boxing game, I had the Kar-r-r-rate Men instead.

Mexico’s take on GI Joe, “Adventuro Accion” was a pure joy with plenty of additions, variations and exclusives. Oh, how I love these so.

Lili Ledy Sesame Street figures

I am in awe of Mexican Sesame Street toys, especially the regional characters we didn’t get here.

Do I need to explain who Barbara is mimicking? I didn’t think so. Barbie was sold by rival Mexican toymaker Cipsa during this period.

I’ve also made a few other collectible pins based on knockoffs and characters from this website. Look for a few more designs coming very soon.

My latest addition is the UK version of Bulletman, the good people at Palitoy invented a lot of things for Joe including Kung Fu Grip, Eagle Eyes and the flocked hair we all love so much. When they took a look at Bulletman, they decided to make some edits the first being they gave his helmet better vision with larger eye holes.

And they gave him jet boots!

Mexico called him “Hombre Bala” and I’ve yet to see his packaging. Hopefully someday I’ll have another update.
