Japanese Superman figure (eBay Affiliate Link) ––

I believe the word for such an item is “Keshi,” which means “Rubber Eraser” in Japanese. I would also consider the figures made by Diener US as technically Keshi as well. What strikes me about this piece is the Neal Adams art on the box and the fun mix of characters. As a kid, I always flipped out if I saw Aquaman on something.

Six Million Dollar Man Play Suit (eBay Affiliate Link) —

This playsuit has been making me giggle for days, but I couldn’t figure out why. It reminds me of how my friends and I would run in slow motion while pretending to be bionic. So I’m not laughing at the kid on the box, I AM the kid on the box at least metaphorically. Also, now I just run in slow motion.

Centasable Silly Swords (eBay Afiliate Link) —

I’m going to guess that every kid who had one of these (a) pretended they were lightsabers and (b) somehow hurt their eye.

Sesame Street Bert and Ernie Radio (eBay Affiliate Link) —

I’m very pro “Bert and Ernie” items in this column, and that’s good because it seems to be a total bottomless pit of merchandise! George Lucas should kiss Bert’s ring which I imagine looks like a Bottlecap/Pigeon hybrid of some sort. I’ve thought too much about this.

Vintage Halloween Pics Round up

At the beginning of October I put out the call for your vintage Halloween costume photos and brother, did you respond with your wood paneled goodness like this photo from Jason above.

To be honest, putting them all together became a daunting task, however, that’s a good problem to have. An incredible vintage costume explosion awaits after the jump.

Here is young Jason as Caspar, a Halloween staple for decades.

Here’s Arthur as Dr. Cornelius from Planet of the Apes or is that Galen? I can never tell those two apart. I’m digging the giant TV in the background….

Here is Steve and his brother rocking their homemade Star Wars costumes in 1977. Does it get better than stuff like this?

Tim Baron sent in this awesome trifecta of Yoda, Dracula and Storm Trooper. The Yoda robes are far better than my smock and sweater combo.

Here’s JB rocking the Collegeville Hot Wheels driver costume.

Here’s Trilkhai as a toddler version of Holly Hobby in 1978. Adorable!

Here is David and his nephew in 1962, man Casper had some longevity didn’t he?

The above three all come from Jamie who mentions that the Superman costume are actually his pajamas. I have to wonder why Superman was marketed in the late 70s with a lone ranger mask.

James and Joseph were Snoopy and Charlie Brown in 1975.

Brian Writes “Attached is a photo of me (the sad clown), my brother (the hobo), and our neighbor (the Bionic Woman) taken on Halloween night 1977. I honestly don’t know what my parents were thinking.”

Here is Michael’s first Halloween, I don’t think I was born yet.

Andrew writes about this photo: “7th grade in Overland Park, Kansas 1985 with homemade costumes. My friend dressed as Leatherface was actually wearing my face. My brother made the Freddy glove and the plaster cast I used to sculpt my latex mask.

Matt submitted this through our facebook page and writes: “Halloween 1982, when Rubik’s Cube mania was in full force, and my mom made a Rubik’s Cube costume for me (cardboaord bix and construction paper) while my brother went dressed as Dracula”

Michele sent in this awesome double shot of TV magic people “Not sure of the year.. 1974 or 75.. I am Jeannie and my friend is Witchiepoo..the closing credits of I Dream of Jeannie is on the tv too.”

Eric sent in this show of him as Q-Bert! I had no idea “This picture was taken in Montreal in 1983, when I was 5 years old. I’m standing in front of my daycare centre, and I’m wearing the Collegeville Q*Bert costume (with makeup replacing the mask, probably out of concern that I couldn’t see well with the mask on).”

Matt sent in this Halloween parade shot from 1980.

Da Grail! Da Grail!

I managed to track down a major Halloween costume grail this past weekend and while it’s certainly not the most expensive or most desired suit on my want list, it sure is a personal favourite. More on this after the jump!

This past weekend I attended the Chicago Toy show (full photo albums can be found on our facebook page) , which I’ve done a few times before but this weekend was a bit special as I was contacted a few days prior by a gent named Chris that he was selling his Halloween costume collection.

Seriously, he had a Holmes and Yo-Yo costume! Let that sink in…..

I’m so glad I went just to witness how amazing it was, so many costumes I’d never heard of, seriously it was epic. Trouble is, I couldn’t seem to find one I needed, the ones I rattled off were either already spoken for or not present and then i found this….

The Fantasy Island Tattoo costume! As readers of this blog know, I love Fantasy Island to pieces and I’ve wanted this weird costume for years. The best part of it was, it was dirt cheap baby as Chris’s prices were as easy going as he was.

The costume fits a child up to 58″ tall (ironic considering Villachez was only 46″ tall) so for what will probably be the last year ever, I have my child modeling it.

Tattoo will be preserved for the next few months on the door of the PlaidStallions bunker (ie my basement office) serving to inspire me each day.

1968 Collegville Costumes Catalog

It’s Halloween season and that means a shiny new costume catalog from one of my favourite companies in the entire world, Collegeville!

This year we go waaaaay back to 1968 and check out what was hot for kid’s costumes that year. Leading the charge is Doctor Doolittle but in his wake are such familiar characters such as Tarzan, The Phantom, Doctor Solar, Major Matt Mason, Flipper and a nobody named Mr Spock.

I love this assortment from 1969, the majority of these characters would end up on costumes for decades. Promotion for these was done on TV spots but not in the usual manner but through participation with the myriad of local kid’s shows that peppered the landscape at the time.
