Plaid Stallions 18th Birthday

It’s Plaid Stallions’ birthday, and now I can ship it off to college or the army I guess.

Starting this site on a lazy Saturday while my baby daughter napped was more important than I’d ever realized. I had no idea that when I started posting old catalogue photos online. Starting Plaid Stallions would open such an incredible door that would have me make new friends, create podcasts, go back to college, write books and magazines, and even make action figures based on crazy concepts.

None of this would have happened if I had just decided to watch TV, so it ranks as one of the better decisions I’ve ever made.

Initially, I was going to give PS “Five years tops,” but I just kept going thanks to all the positive people I encountered on this journey.

That support and kindness kept me going, and I always found it here during good times and bad; this has been an amazing ride.

So I would love to give out presents on our birthday because I already got mine from you, and so on with the contest!

RUNNER UP PRIZE:

Ten participants will receive an Infl8able Monster in its limited edition packaging.  These are the same figures that come with issue 12 of Toy-Ventures Magazine, but in a special “Rack Toy” package. We’re only making 150 of these with a custom header card by the amazing Peter Carsillo; these will be sold on the site and at shows soon, but you can get one absolutely free.

Mattel Slime with Worms commercial (eBay Link) —

I never had slime as a kid, well, not “official Mattel brand” Slime; I did manage some through a grocery store vending machine (so good!) For some reason, I vividly remember this commercial and really wanting the stuff. In hindsight, this sort of thing is almost impossible to ignore when you’re six. 

The Aliens figure (eBay Link)—

These Shogun Warrior knock off figures came out in the late 1970s and are absolutely charming. I’m personally in love with the logo.

Bootleg Visitor ship from “V” (eBay Link)–

We sure did robbed of officially licensed V toys in the 1980s but wow, did bootleggers try to fill that void. I love these little shuttle replicas and the seller has a whole bunch of options. I’ve also heard there is a segment on bootleg V action figures in the latest issue of Toy-Ventures. I know a guy there.

Black Velvet Bruce Lee (eBay Link) —

I don’t think I really need to explain this; it speaks for itself. For those not into Kung Fu, may I offer you this hilarious off-brand Black Velvet Tweety Bird?

Jaws era Shark Puzzle (eBay Link) –

I can’t honestly tell if I like official “Jaws” merchandise more than “Generic Shark meant to look like Jaws” merchandise. They’re both kind of awesome.

Hey folks, I’m happy to say that I’m putting the final touches on Knock-Offs after spending the last 24 hours with this glorious press proof.

This book and the new printer I’m using have totally exceeded my expectations, I seriously am overjoyed with how things are shaping up. This book is an explosion of fun energy and it’s been a blast putting it together, everybody inside these pages was real fun to work with.

Knock-Offs will go into production early next week and I’ve opened up the pre-orders in the Plaid Stallions Store.

Knock-Offs will also soon be in the Diamond Catalog for shipping sometime next year. I’ll post an update when it lands but it means that comic shops across the world will be able to carry it. Very exciting news.

I’m also offering a bundle with copies of the new version of my first book “Rack Toys: Cheap Crazed Playthings”. I’ve signed the copies of Rack Toys as well, I think that makes them super rare.
