“Tarzan Birthday Party” was the name of my ill-fated improv group in college. Also, never start an improv group at a business school. Seeing as how much I was drawn to the Filmation Tarzan series, I’d have really welcomed this for my 6th birthday.

GI Joe Skydive to Danger (sponsored link)

When I turned six, my grandmother let me tag along with her to Eatons (RIP) to pick out one thing for my birthday. She left me in the toy aisle for probably a half an hour while she went to the credit department. It is one of my fondest childhood memories, looking through all those crazy GI Joe, Big Jim and Mego Superhero packages, just leisurely drinking it all in. I saw some crazy stuff, like Cowboy outfits for Joe that I would later find out were exclusive to Canada. Anyway, I chose this, which, to me, is the coolest Joe set ever. You’ve got a parachute and a giant spider. It still sets my brain afire.

Microman Lady Command figure (sponsored Link) 

Thanks to the Super 7 Micronauts figures, I’ve been in a real Micronaut mood lately. This is a Micronaut Mego didn’t bring to the states, the female version of the Pharoid instead, her time chamber is the Statue of Liberty. I wouldn’t have bought this at ten but OMG I’ll take one now.  The above is a vintage one, but reproductions are cheap and abundant. 

Popeye the movie Colorforms (sponsored link)

I’ve probably said this before, but I unabashedly love this movie, I know it’s flawed, and its production involved mountains of Cocaine (never tried), but I was ten when I saw it at the Oshawa Center. Call it my personal  “Goonies,” ok? However, I’m aware it’s not for everyone. I like Harry Nilsson’s music, adore Shelly Duvall, and love comedic violence. Plus, Donald Moffat was REM on “Logan’s Run.” That’s all I got.

Whenever I mention colorforms, I also like to say that toy designer Mel Birnkrant shares all his knowledge. He probably has an anecdote about this set if you ask him on the book face, I wish more toy people were like Mel.

Cool as hell Spider-Man shirt from the 1970s (sponsored link) —

This kid’s shirt blows my mind, mainly for the appearance of (weirdly drawn) Man-Wolf! I was really drawn to these types of monster characters as a kid (Man-Bat fans represent!) so seeing them on merch always makes me smile.

GI Joe Dangerous Assignment Game (sponsored link) —

This is easily one of my bigger grails, a board game based on the GI Joe Adventure team when I was five years old. I love absolutely everything about this, but when it does show up, it’s a bad time, like the Holidays during a 3-week mail strike. Yay!

My lifelong obsession with this tour is justified when I see a postcard featuring a “Fake Ferrigno” and Frankenstein in one shot.

Cryotron Carry Case (eBay Link) —

This was a Sears Canada exclusive, and I remember that catalogue fondly as it was the first time I saw the Mego Black Hole Humanoid and Old B.O.B.

Despite it kind of looking like a “Space Toilet Seat” I dream of finding one packed with figures like the happy kid below. Dang, I even had that shirt and haircut as a kid.

AHI Batman Communicator Rack Toy (eBay Link)

It’s pretty funny that it took me this long to realize these are the same communicators from the Remco Batman Utility belt despite me knowing this is the same company. I’d like to pretend that I just forgot this fact but I’m not sure. 

What I am sure of is no kid ever heard a damn thing on the other end of this.

GI Joe Avenger Pursuit Craft (eBay Link)-–

I was five when this toy came out and as I’ve mentioned before, I was ALL IN ON THE SUPER ADVENTURE TEAM! Teaming up GI Joe, Bulletman and Atomic Man to fight Space cavemen? I was all in. I only ever got one vehicle from this line and that was the capture copter, I still treasure that toy. However, these boxes with their glorious art really hit me. I just have a serious space issue these days.

Fisher Price McDonaldland playset (eBay Link)—

I was planning to cool it on Mcdonald’s stuff this week, but I was recently at a collector’s house and saw one of these. I had no idea they were a thing but now I need a Hamburglar LP figure more than I want air.

Superhero Notebooks (eBay Link) —

Back in the 90s, there was a cool collectibles shop in Toronto called “Fun-O-Rama,” and it was a treasure trove of stuff like this. Superhero notebooks, finger rings, pens and finger puppets were all dirt cheap. I used that stuff like they were simple office supplies and well, seeing the price of this lot? I regret nothing except that I didn’t spend more money at Fun-O-Rama.

One of the driving passions behind PlaidStallions is collecting Vintage Toy Store Photos. It’s a beautiful experience to relive those childhood memories, no matter how fleeting they are. I’m very proud of the many images I’ve found over the years, so what better time than December to pick our ten favourites?

Vintage Toy Store Photo- Kenner Star Wars in Macys

Who could resist this impressive shot from 1978 of the “Sci-Fi” section of Macy’s? Filled with not only the hottest Kenner Star Wars items but in the back we have the Ideal STAR TEAM and Mego Micronauts. It truly is a seven-year-old’s dream if you’re me.

Shogun Warriors Store Display

I love everything about this photo; I want to jump into it and buy a complete set of boxed Shogun Warriors and like all the Godzillas. I wanted these badly as a kid, but the folks said no. Now they task me, they task me! *Shakes Fist*

Gimbels 1980- Look at all those Minty carded Mego Superheroes, Funstuf Rage Cage Hulks and Remco Energized Spider-Men! I am in heaven.

Mego Superheroes and Adventure Team GI JO

This shot, which I would love to see in colour, is perhaps my favourite of all the photos I’ve found. It’s the closest I’ll get to the Toy Department of the Eaton’s in the Scarborough Town Center as a kid. I remember being in awe of all the art on the GI Joe packaging. That display box of Mego Superheroes also screams childhood to me!

Fisher Price Adventure People

The Fisher Price Adventure People showed up every Christmas like clockwork, and I always loved them. Such an amazing line of toys, non-violent and you weren’t embarrassed by having girl figures. Bring this back, Fisher Price!

I’ll admit I was 15 when this photo was taken, but I still visited the toy aisles A LOT (I’ve never stopped), which brings me back. I especially love the Kenner Power of the Force figures being regulated to the bottom for such new figure lines as the Infaceables, GI Joe, Thundercats and Masters of the Universe. I think most if not all of these lines are available at toy stores now. Well, probably not the Infaceables; history was not kind to them.

Aurora Monster Models

There is something so magical about a whole end cap of Glow-in-the-Dark Aurora monster models. I wonder about the value of that display.

Kenner Bionic Man Store Display

Some sweet Bionic Man goodness on display here. Kenner Steve Austin and friends were a Christmas staple for me from 75-78 and a true highlight of being a kid. Those hot pink boxes really popped!

Mattel Slime Store Display

You know, I know it’s just a byproduct of borax, but dammit, I want a can of slime. Always have.

For a kid growing up in a small farm town outside of Toronto, the New Jersey Heroes World stores might as well have been Narnia. I dreamt of going there every time I saw a comic book ad.
