Little People Astronaut Set

I discovered this set in the 1977 Spiegel catalog and wow, I’m so smitten. Not only is it a fun knock-off of Fisher Price’s little People in a Space theme, but there is an amazing Star Trek reference in here. The Dinosaur idol has to be a take on “Vol” from the classic Star Trek episode “The Apple.” It’s an episode that got its own playset via the Mego Star Trek Mission to Gamma 6 toy.

Did anyone have this as a kid? I would have played with it for years.

Donny and Marie Osmond Rack Toy Catalog (Gordy International)

The popularity of the Sid and Marty Krofft-produced “Donny and Marie” television show spawned a plethora of merchandise, most famously the fashion doll line from Mattel. However, the show was so popular, it was “Rack Toy” popular and Gordy International, a prolific 1970s impulse toy maker, issued a special catalog of merchandise to follow suit. While the line mainly focuses on Marie by label slapping her face on some existing items, Donny gets a few items as well, including a magic kit.

Kenner The Car Game

The folks at Kenner did some incredibly smart moves like the Six Million Dollar Man and Star Wars, we can’t forget they also thought up things Milky the Milking Cow and actually tried to market a game based on the 1977 Horror film “The Car“.

For those not in the know, this was a movie about a possessed car that runs people over, it starred James Brolin and it’s the kind of cheese you expect it to be. It’s basically “Jaws” but with a demonic car that can teleport around and kill people.

The Success of Ideal’s Jaws game probably had a lot to do with the inspiration to spin-off merchandise from this movie, but it’s a little dark for kids. The Car opened to poor reviews (although it’s found a cult following and earned a sequel in 2019) but to my knowledge, the Kenner The Car game never hit store shelves, which I am kind of bummed about, I would love to play this!

1977 Mattel Welcome Back Kotter Catalog

The popularity of the sitcom “Welcome Back Kotter” inspired all kinds of merchandising including these 9″ figures from Mattel, the line was a bit of a flop, and carded figures can still be affordably priced today (especially the Horshak!)

The Sweathogs classroom playset included a record of catchphrases from the show, which I thought were hilarious in 1976. The Sweathog bike is a recycled Big Jim Motor Cross, you’d see Big Jim stuff reused up until the mid-eighties!

Mattel 1977 Space:1999 Catalog

The Eagle One Ship and Moonbase Alpha Playset were holdovers from the 1976 Mattel Space:1999 Offering

Space 1999 is heavily featured in the premiere issue of our new magazine “Toy-Ventures” available now!

The Zython alien figure was added to the line this year, however he wasn’t an alien that appeared on the series. He ended up only seeing release in Europe. The Mattel Eagle Vertibird playset is very hard to find.

This recently discovered prototype from Mattel is a 1/6th scale version of the Commander Koenig character played by Martin Landau. It’s not known why Mattel abandoned this figure but it’s likeness is amazing.

In the same lot were unpainted factory “first pulls” of the 9″ figure heads for Commander Koenig and Professor Bergman.

The Zython from Mattel’s Space:1999 line.

The Zython was offered in the 1977 Mattel Catalog as an alien character to go alongside with Mattel’s Space:1999 action figure line. It never appeared in the series but was a rather welcome addition to the line which desperately needed more flair.

However, sales on Space:1999 merch weren’t strong enough to warrant a wide release and the Zython seems to have only been offered via this contest for a German comic book above (Thanks Eddy for the scan). It’s speculated that less than 300 of these were made, we’ll probably never know for sure but a few have trickled out of Deutschland over the years.

But of course, this is Mattel we’re talking about here, they’d never let a good toy mold go unused, so Zython would later appear in the amazing Mexican version of Big Jim (known as Kid Acero), which was produced under license by a company called CIPSA, who would dub him Nocton an alien enemy of Kid Acero.

So, while I’ll probably never own a Zython (the last one went for just under a grand), I was able to buy a Nocton in the 1990s and still have him to this day. One day I hope to track down his scepter.

Tomy’s Mighty Max is a really neat toy that often gets mistaken for a Micronaut or a Shogun Warrior.
