The Addar Planet of the Apes model kits arrived in 1973, and wow, did they kick off a licensing explosion.

These kits were EVERYWHERE when I was a kid. AMT Star Trek seemed to dominate every toy store, including local variety stores and cigar stores. I probably had them all at one point, completely ruined by a lack of skill and patience. I got there eventually, but wow, that road was paved with many swears.

When I finally got to Cons as a teen in the 1980s, buttons were a big deal. I doubt many were officially licensed, but we didn’t seem too bothered by it. I’ll take a “Star Trek Lives” bumper sticker.

Ideal Planet of the Apes inflatable Galen

Behold what happens when you’ve had a little much Christmas cheer, and everybody went to bed. Apparently, I really had to have this inflatable Galen from Planet of the Apes, which totally checks out. Everyone needs an inflatable Roddy McDowall, right? Right?

Turns out this was like a series, and I borrowed this image from Hunter’s Planet of the Apes Archive (which is amazing, go there!) to see them all blown up.

We got a General Urko, Doctor Zaius and Galen; sadly no astronauts, but I don’t blame them. 

I don’t think I’ll collect them all but this will be going in my Planet of the Apes display.

I’ve blogged about the bootleg Planet of the Apes knock off action figure line “The Astro Apes” before but I never thought I’d run into more merchandising for such a fly by night line.


Then I run into these insane dime store rarities, let us have a looksie this box inside after the jump.

The box itself utilizes some of the artwork from the Astro Apes header card and keeps the same characters as well. The box lists an importer “Dan Brechner & Co” which is something the action figures do not, heck there isn’t a manufacturer, probably because 20th Century Fox and Mego were on the warpath for knock off apes.


I’ve since discovered the Astro Apes came from “United Manufacturing Company“


So, what is in this box?

Weird little inflatable figures of the characters, they look exactly like the action figures, that’s a staggering amount of continuity and care for what essentially was a series of cheap Planet of the Apes rip off figures.


If I saw these on a counter as a kid, I think the money would have left my hands before I knew it.

Here is Warrior Ape, Dr Zorma and Myra posing with their namesakes. I wonder if there is any other cheap-o Astro Apes merchandise still out there? Hopefully we find out!

Matchbox Mobile Action Command (MAC for short) is a largely forgotten toy line but happily remembered toy line of the 1970s. At least judging by the “What were those cool vehicle/figure sets called?” type emails i get about once a week.


It’s also a toy line I actively collect but with one caveat, I have to find it in the wild. In this marvelous digital age, I have come to savour the old fashioned hunt that toy collecting once was and about once a year, I find a MAC piece for $20. Last weekend, I discovered the air rescue unit and I’d thought I’d share some pics.

All my memories of MAC stuff involved them being carded (like this set I found last year) but the earliest stuff came in these boxes. 


I remember the appeal of these being you got a figure and a futuristic vehicle for well under 5 bucks. I could usually con my grandmother into one of these every six months or so.

The lack of a backstory on these guys never deterred me, in fact it’s one of the things I now treasure about early 70s adventure toy lines. You put whatever you want on these guys.

And just to prove how awesome these toys are, Matchbox could have stopped with pilot/helicopter but no, they gave him a freaking jet pack which only adds play value!

As space is so limited around here (kind of like money) I tend to not buy a lot of Battle of the Planets stuff these days,  unless it’s a) Cheap and b) features Zoltar or his Spectra goons.


This Japanese card game checked both of those boxes, it’s got my favourite transgendered villain on the box and it only cost me $10.
