The caption reads “LJN is aiming for success in the forthcoming movie “Dune” as this reproduction of a scene from the film in the toy company’s Toy Fair showroom proved.”

The article goes on to mention “LJN will also be involved in producing
a line of products for “Dune,” a Universal Pictures release. The
movie is based on a best selling science fiction novel which already has
several sequels in print. It seems quite probable that Dune will be a long-term line for LJN.”

Narrator “It wasn’t.”

1983 LJN Catalog- CHiPs action figures

LJN toys had a long tradition of picking up cool cop shows like SWAT and The Rookies and that tradition carried on in the 1983 LJN catalog where they hoped to continue for toymaker Mego (who shut it’s doors that year) left off by continuing the CHiPs line. However, it’s not likely any LJN branded CHiPs merchandise was ever produced, as the series ended it’s six year run that year and the store shelves had ample quantity of the Mego products.

Also offered this year was Magnum PI using what appears to be a retooled Mego Dukes of Hazzard body. While I’ve never seen any LJN branded chips figures, the Magnum playset is now a sought-after collectible. The carded figure has never been seen on the collectors market and I doubt it was produced.

LJN TV Stars from 1976

I never had the LJN TV Super Stars, a Mego scaled line based on then-popular shows like The Rookies, Emergency, and S.W.A.T. I would have loved Police and Firemen to clean up after my Mego Superheroes or perhaps interact with the Mego Star Trek crew. Also impressive are the number of vehicles and accessories they offered.

I’m especially enamoured by the S.W.A.T playset, LJN did a really nice job with it and I’m a sucker for those old-timey computers.

Despite being kicked out of my sole D&D game when I was 12 (I didn’t really “get” role playing and decided to be an ass) I really dug these toys and bought much of the first wave of figures.

Like I mentioned in the opening, D&D was a big coup for a toy company to get in 1983 and this line should have been a bigger hit.

The first wave of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons figures, the Kelek figure was later changed. There was a nice mix of cloth and plastic here and I remember being happy to see Strongheart on the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon!

A good steed is essential to all fantasy toylines..

I remember these giftsets well, I drew the line at them, to me they were toys but the figures were um… collectible figurines, yeah that’s probably how I justified it to myself.

I searched for Northlord forever as a kid, never found him, not even sure he made it to Canada.

Hook Horror was another character that I searched for, I hit every store in my town that sold toys (4) and I can safely say it never made it to retail in my area..

These miniature figures were something I grabbed every single one of, they were cheaply priced and I couldn’t paint metal miniatures to save my life. I didn’t do anything with them however…

Easily one of the most inspired-looking playsets of the 1980s..

It’s hard to believe that toymakers thought the next merchandising blitz would come from a David Lynch film but that’s exactly what happened in 1984. Dune got the full treatment with colouring books, bed sheets and of course a selection of action figures produced by LJN. The movie wasn’t particularly kid (or for that matter general public) friendly and as a result, the spice warriors of Dune resided in the clearance aisle.

What’s perplexing to me is most of this stuff got made, yet the gigantically more kid-friendly “Last Starfighter” toy line never saw the light of day. Aggghhh!

LJN bought a lot of trade ads for this line, anticipating it be the movie hit of the Christmas season..

Gurney Was also cut from the team, however, the world would not be deprived of Patrick Stewart action figures for very long. Notice they mention several sandworms and they weren’t allowed to show them. I find that weird seeing as they were largely phallic symbols.

LJN chose to release only male heroes with their first wave, Mike Donavan (Marc Singer) was the star of the series but it seems odd they chose Kyle over Ham Tyler (played by Michael Ironside) perhaps LJN had inside knowledge he would be leaving the series.

The main attraction of the line, the Visitor Trooper and Diana figure, both with the ability to rip off their faces and reveal their inner lizard. I can see this being a big hit with kids..

The Visitor 12″ Doll was the only thing LJN actually released before cutting the V license.

PlaidStallions Toy-Ventures Magazine #1 is now available and it’s been called “not only an entertaining read, but it’s also an impeccable work of reference” by PopCult.

The Visitor ripping his face off was the centerpiece of LJN’s promotional artwork this year and so it should be.
