1984 Galoob Mr.T Catalog

In the early 1980s, a gentle, gold-chained-covered giant came into our households and told us to read the bible and drink our milk and in doing so, captured our hearts. Mr. T was exactly what Reagan-era America was looking for, a straight-laced tough guy whose look hinted at rebellion.

The ensuing “T Mania” storm was hard and fast with merchandise pouring out everywhere, riding the crest of this was Galoob, who made one of their smarter decisions in capitalizing on America’s unlikely sweetheart.

Mr. T truly was everywhere during this time including Saturday morning and the cereal aisle.

The 12″ Galoob Mr. T action figure would have given the Mego 12″ Hulk a run for its money. I especially love the Army and Fireman sets which remind me of Big Jim or Action Jackson. 

Talking Mr. T is a logical item and I guess this is actually meant to be B.A. Baracus, his character from the A-Team? I love the kid’s expression here, he is channelling Kenneth Williams from the “Carry On” films.

I could be wrong but I don’t think these Galoob Mr. T rag dolls were ever produced. So children didn’t get to cuddle up with him every night like they could with a Wrestler.

Star Trek had a varied history as a toy property. The television series would make millions for companies such as Mego. Still, the subsequent Motion Picture was a massive disappointment for licensors and left a mark of uncertainty on the brand’s viability.

The first wave of figures was received well by fans, and it was one of the first lines to have adult collectors seeking variants. However, several issues plagued the line, such as strange case counts resulting in an overabundance of certain characters, and the series had a somewhat shaky first season.

These issues scuttled the line in its second year when only a fraction of the toys promised were released. This remarkable document from Galoob showcases some of them.

The main focus in this is the two new figures for that year, namely Wesley Crusher and the Romulan. I’m particularly smitten with the Romulan as it’s the only character with ties to the original Star Trek series. Galoob sadly cancelled the line before these saw release.

The Shuttles for the Galoob Star Trek TNG line would see limited release, as did the Alien figures. I would never see these at retail; I would only see them in collector shops for five times retail. This line’s distribution issues were right from the get-go it seems.

The die-cast Ferengi ship is another story. I DID see this at retail, at a Toys and Wheels store in Pickering, ON in July of 1989. I remember it because it was on an Enterprise card and my then-girlfriend said “Hey, that’s not the Enterprise”. I wish I had bought it, I don’t know how it got there but it was sitting on the close-out rack with the other TNG toys. Oh for a time machine.

Blackstar saw a second life, thanks to Filmation’s next project, “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe,” based on a hot toy line combining science fiction with fantasy.

The show aired again in 1983, and toymaker Galoob would license it for action figures hoping to capitalize on the MOTU craze.

At the time, many toymakers were mining fantasy programs to compete with He-Man, Remco licensed Conan, Warlord, Kazar and Thundarr the Barbarian, hoping to cash in on the craze.

The gambit worked, and Blackstar enjoyed a very positive two years of sales.

Galoob really went all out with the Blackstar range adding many of the main characters from the show, including the impish “Trobbits”.

This is the second year for the Blackstar range and many of the figures were upgraded to have “Laser Lights” which meant sparks flew out of their chests.

1984 saw some new bad guys added to the line, each with their own demon character. i find these guys in bins all the time.

The Blackstar ice castle was the big playset for the line and it was a lower-cost alternative to Castle Greyskull, I remember watching people grabbing these with both hands that Christmas at my local Woolco. Smashing box art on that one.

The Blackstar spaceship is based I believe that astronaut John Blackstar came to this planet in. It’s been over 40 years since I watched this show, so I’m rusty.

I’ve always really liked Warlock, Blackstar’s dragon steed.
