As Christmas time approaches, I thought it would be fun to talk about Space Lego. Mainly because it was often featured in my letters to Santa, but I never got it.

Now, I turned out just fine, Christmas was amazing but my folks would just settle for a regular Lego set. I pined for this stuff from afar.

To get my fix, I would have to visit a neighbour kid who had several of the sets. I was allowed to fiddle with them under his very strict supervision, but he was  extremely controlling.  He was also  extremely annoying and gave me chicken pox on the day before March Break(!) but those brief moments where I got to play Space Lego are very fond memories for me. I was captivated by it’s detail and the amount of fun these sets have. The happy little space men had me.

I ended up with one small set for Christmas 1981 (I believe it’s option C here). As an adult toy collector, I’d always see vintage Space Lego at shows, even an awesome display (See Below) but I never felt it had much room in my collection. I had/have too many interests as it is. I didn’t need another thing stressing my budget. 

However, I married a woman who not only grew up with Space Lego, but it was her favourite toy ever! She began collecting in the late 90s and even though she’s retired, I got to have a Space lego collection, after all, I still couldn’t touch it without supervision but hey, that feels like an authentic childhood experience to me. Below are some shots of her collection when we had it on display in my old office:

Lego has reissued the Galaxy Explorer this year and the price isn’t insane all things considered. It is the toy I fell in love with as a kid and I’m happy to see it back.

If there is any testament to the power of Fisher-Price toys, it’s the fact that many of the items featured here had serious longevity. I had the three bottom items from the Fisher-Price play family series, namely the Farm, the parking garage and the ferry boat before I went to kindergarten and they’re still available for sale when I’m in the fifth grade. That my friends represent some serious staying power in the toy aisle.

The Fisher-Price Adventure People really hit their stride by this time. I had just about outgrown the series by then but I remember really wanting that submarine and squid. However, the siren call of sci-fi-related toys had won me over.

I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise that Santa and Barbie has a close working relationship….

I have zero recollection of Charmkins, most likely because I was a pre-teen male at the time.

Unlike Charmkins, I remember “My Little Pony”, mostly because I’ve had it’s jingle in my head since 1983!

Space Lego truly was one of the most perfect toys in the universe, why have they not been reissued?

The Fisher Price Adventure people still got a little love in ’83.

Star Wars was still a big deal in ’83 but the finale of the trilogy signalled the end for action figure series as well.

It’s interesting to see how many toy concepts from this era are still widely available today.

Yo Joe! Another long running item from the 80s.

I’d like to see David Hasselhoff on that KITT bike.

I made a very organized pitch for the Vectrex system as a teen, I was shot down with great impunity.

The Muppets were a smash in syndication, who doesn’t think of them when that ITC logo appears?

The Mego 12″ Wonder Woman brought in the bucks for many a year while Sindy was attempting to get some Barbie magic in a different scale..

The concept behind Kenner’s baby wet and care are still available at toy stores to this day.

The Micronauts by Mego Corporation (released by Grand Toys) were an incredibly strong seller in Canada, the Eaton Center in downtown Toronto had a huge window display of them that year (If anyone had the sense to snap some pictures, please send them to me) The Micronauts coverage in this flier actually dwarfs Star Wars.

Space Lego started to appear around this time, one of the coolest toy lines ever IMO.

Capsela was an electronic building set with a space age flair..

Star Wars was distributed in Canada by Irwin Toys under the name “Kenner Canada” I sent many a proof of purchase to that Toronto address….

Matchbox had been selling the Mobile Action Command line of figures and vehicles for much of the 1970s, small wonder, at $1.99 per set they were a well-priced toy. The Spider-man racing set is one of the few superhero-related items in this flier.

I think it’s impossible to have grown up in the 1970’s suburbia and not know someone who had a Marx Green Machine or Big Wheel. I got to use my neighbour Gordon’s Green Machine once, so at least I can go to my final resting place knowing I hit the spin-out lever..

Classic board games like Sorry and Operation were joined by soon to be classics like Hungry, Hungry Hippos and Mr Mouth
