Review: Big Jim : A World of Adventures

As a kid of the early 1970s, Big Jim rocked my world. I’m also happy I have video evidence of me receiving a Big Jim for Christmas in 1974.

As you can see, I’m pretty happy with the guy. As a lover of collector books, i’ve always felt Big Jim was kind of ….underserved. (more after the jump)

I have beautiful books on GI Joe, Star Wars, Mego etc but Mattel’s man of action never got much love. That’s why I’m so excited about this, even if it’s entirely in French.

Yes, Big Jim: un Monde d’Aventures is from France, not surprisingly though considering that after leaving US toy shelves in 1976, Big Jim would enjoy massive success in Europe for another decade, becoming a Spy, a pirate, a cowboy and eventually heading off into outer space.

Despite this language barrier ( Trust me my French is at a “D student in ninth grade” level) I still heartily recommend this book because it is just wall to wall eye candy!

Author Pascal Pinteau has gone above and beyond with this and created a 286-page publication that explodes with colour. Toy pictures, catalogs, comics all merged into a buffet that I’ll admit, had me checking eBay.

All of Big Jim’s eras are covered including his early development at Mattel including a fun part about how he was marketed in the United Kingdom as a spy known as “Mark Strong: The Man from M.A.T.T.E.L”. Mark Strong even had his own comic book and this wouldn’t be the last time Jim got a comic in foreign countries.

The Wolf P.A.C.K era (one of the most popular iterations of Big Jim, especially if you’re me) gets loving coverage and includes several prototype items that didn’t make it to market. I had never seen this stuff.

Pascal has tracked many former Mattel employees and interviewed them at great length, you get a wonderful visual window into this lines origin, different incarnations and even what the future held. There are so many little fun surprises here, I don’t want to spoil them.

Fans of “Masters of the Universe” will really enjoy the many connections Big Jim had to the line, from character designs to just plain old recycling (Mattel is the king of that), it’s a fun bit of history.

But that’s not it, Pascal also spend hundreds of hours creating fun dioramas, These beautiful shots give the book a wonderful “Wishbook” feel and well, it truly adds to the charm. Here is a behind the scenes shot of one of those dioramas and below is an exclusive widescreen shot.

Pascal has clearly written the best book on Big Jim ever done but more importantly, it’s one of the nicest collector publications I have ever seen. The attention to detail on this book is an example of how much love was put into this, if you like Big Jim, you should get this.

Spotlight: Planet of the Apes Game by IDW

This past week when I went to my local shop, (World’s Collide BTW) I was presented with this Planet of the Apes tabletop game by IDW.

I like games and if you pair them with an established property, well I’m an easy mark, so even though I didn’t sincerely recall ordering it, it sounded like something I’d do and I went on my way.

What it is: Planet of the Apes is a cooperation game, meaning all players work together rather than pitted against each other. I like this concept a great deal although I’ve never been particularly successful at it. I’m a big fan of Star Trek Cattan BTW….

How it’s played: Each one of the up to four players is Taylor, albeit in a different emotional state, there is Clever Taylor, Defiant Taylor etc.

The game works sequentially in the film’s timeline as you race against time to go through the various stages of the film. Each area has different challenges and relies often on dice to get you through.

If the Soldier Ape or the Statue of Liberty gets to the bottom before Taylor, well, you blew it up you maniacs.

How it Looks- It’s a pretty darn gorgeous game, the box art is by Jason Edmiston, a super talented dude I got to have a beer with a few years ago and have been a fan of ever since. The interior art is equally as beautiful, this is a joy to look at.

I got an early edition of the game and it came with plastic figurines of the Icarus, Taylor, a Soldier Ape and the Statue of Liberty but honestly, the cardboard pieces are super nice. I’m an Ape toy geek, so these do make me happy, I admit it….

So do you like it? Honestly, i’ve had a lot of fun but I’ll freely admit this, I’m not sure if I’m doing it correctly.

Planet of the Apes is ambitious and a little complicated, even on my second play, I had some questions. Now, that isn’t a bad thing, the game rather new and I expect more and more Youtube videos of actual game play will probably answer all my questions.

I do see myself playing this a few more times as I’ve enjoyed the experience thus far.

The absolute best place to get this is your local brick and mortar comic or game store. Keep them in business, spend your dollars locally.

Review: Comic Book Fever by George Khoury

I own a lot of books by George Khoury, in fact this isn’t even the first book by him that I’ve reviewed on this blog and I don’t read much, so that’s pretty special.

The reason I own so many, is that George and I seem to like a lot of the same things. His latest opus is no exception, in fact, I believethe average reader of this blog should know about this, so join me after the jump for further exploration of this neat book.

To summarize, Comic Book Fever is a “love letter” to the author’s personal golden age of comics, 1976-1986.”

Seeing as I learned to read in 1976 (to a Fantastic Four Treasury edition no less), this feels almost like it’s written for me. However, I’ve left the world of “bagging ad boarding” behind me decades ago, so let me explain the true appeal of Comic Book Fever.

The book is not a dry history of comics or endless discussions on the medium, it’s actually a celebration of the era and discusses all those little things and perks that made it a special time growing up, Here are just some of the topics discussed:

Spotlight: The Original Stretch Armstrong by Jazwares

I haven’t done a photo review in over a year? Thank goodness for the new Jazwares Original Stretch Armstrong.

In the past few years, there’s been talk of a movie and even an animated series but the only thing I give a toss about is a reproduction of the big guy himself. I’ll explain (and show) more after the jump:

Let me start off by saying that Stretch Armstrong is one of my happiest and saddest experiences with toys growing up. A seventh birthday gift, I relentlessly lobbied and loved the hell out of him, even taking him to bed! That’s when temptation got overpowered me.

Yup, I had to know what was inside and ol’ Stretch was never quite the same (the corn syrup was red BTW which added to my state of panic). I was left with a mountain of regret and in my house, it was “One Strike, You’re Out” when it came to breaking a toy.

So Stretch would haunt me for years.

Flash forward to the late 90s, the internet and disposable income had me track down a vintage MIB Stretch for a reasonable sum but he was rock solid (as these tend to get) and it wasn’t the same. I eventually sold him during a purge when I had my first kid.

When this figure finally got announced, I was excited, which is rare these days. So I conned a good pal into bringing me back one from vacation when they started appearing in NY area Target stores.

So how is he?

As reproductions go, this is pretty darn swell. The head is a wonderful reproduction of the original.

There are subtle differences from the original Stretch but they don’t detract from the fun experience. The box art is understandably different and the Stretch mat is no longer included (I never used it as a kid anyway).

He’s slightly smaller but that also means he no longer weighs 80 pounds. There is still some sort of goo inside that hurts like hell if you try to punch him.

His fabric thong is now painted on, so there is no chance of having a nekkid Stretch.

Speaking of Stretching, does he still work?

Well it’s hard to take photos and work this thing, so I had to employ a local teenager.

He does as advertised!

In summation, I’m very happy to have this guy back in my life and at $25 he was well worth it. If you have kids under ten, Stretch should go under the tree this year.

They’re available at Target in the retro games aisle but also through Amazon (of which this blog gets a teensy piece if you click this link) and I heartily recommend this for you.

As an added incentive, Jazwares has hinted on Twitter that Stretch Monster will be next. So buy two, they’re cheap!

Spotlight: Flash Gordon Action Figures by Bif Bang Pow!

It’s been a good summer for me and new toys, as two lines based on retro properties came out and tickled my fancy (better than last summer’s zero).

This week’s is a slightly bigger deal to me as it’s based one of my absolute favourite movies of all time, 1980’s cinematic adaptation of Flash Gordon.

Indepth photo review, a contest and some scant blathering after the jump.

First, my thoughts, as a kid I was pretty upset we never got these on shelves, so this is wish fulfillment.

What I like best about these is that BifBangPow! didn’t follow the “What would Kenner do in 1977” esthetic but chose to make figures in a vintage style. I noticed ZICA’s name on the package, who made those awesome 3 3/4″ Six Million Dollar Man figures last year.

So what we get is an action figure line that looks like another player in the toy game in 1979 be it LJN, Mego, Multiple, Ideal etc snatched this license and made figures hoping to catch some Star Wars heat.

I’m a toy history nerd, so this brings me more joy than it probably should.

Enough chatter from me, judge for yourself and don’t forget, there is a contest at the bottom.

Spotlight: Funko Jaws Reaction Figures

It’s been a long time since I did a photo review of a modern toy, this is mainly because I don’t buy that many modern toys.

Funko’s Jaws line was a break in that drought. I haven’t been much into the ReAction stuff as I thought I would be, mostly because the licenses don’t appeal but also the figure aesthetic hasn’t always been to my liking.

However, the stars lined up pretty swell for this line, it’s the perfect license combined with a nice job. More after the jump:

The chairman of the board is the Shark, if they just made this and not the figures, I’d have been satisfied.

The card art is the poster, so you can’t go wrong but the nicer thing is you can pop the characters off the card and totally get who they’re supposed to be.

I think Quint is the most popular character in the line, I had to wait to get mine.

There is no boat for the series but my childhood Fisher Price Adventure People boat will fill in for the Orca.

An appearance by Aquaman would have greatly altered the ending to the original film.

Review: Lou Scheimer: Creating the Filmation Generation

My earliest memory in this life, other than eating delicious
Play Doh on Christmas morning 1971, was watching a Batman cartoon with my
sister in the TV room one random morning in 1972.

The Penguin was stealing a tank and gassed a soldier, the whole thing just intrigued
me and I think started me on my love affair with Batgirl but that’s another story.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, Filmation hooked me at an
early age. So much so that I even identified the name “Scheimer” (I dopily mispronounced
it as “Schemer” until adulthood) with joy in the mid 1970s.

I cherish this Ark 2 Halloween costume.

Sure, I have love in my heart for the
Kroffts and Hanna Barbera’s of this world but Filmation always remained my
favourite. I never missed a Shazam!, Ark 2 or Tarzan as a kid, hell, I even
regularly watched (but clearly did not grasp) Uncle Croc’s Block when it aired.

So it was pretty much a given that I’d invest in this new
tome. Actually, I bought it twice by accident. What I worried about though, was
how much of this was going to be new to me.

As the images in this piece suggest, I’m an ardent
filmation collector and fan. I’ve bought every DVD set near and dear to me and watched
the resulting documentaries many times (coincidentally, those great extras also
included Scheimer and Mangels) and I even asked Mr Scheimer questions in person
(he’s a nice man btw). I worried it would
just be a rehash of stuff I’ve heard ad nauseum, I like to call that the “Stan
Lee Situation”.

Lou signed this for me in 2006, I can’t find it now. Grrr.

Fortunately, my worries were put to rest the minute the book
arrived. I lost nearly an hour pouring through the information, I’m not even
done reading it but I’ve seen enough to say this book is exhaustive and absolutely
captivating.

Scheimer has an incredible memory of the events that shaped
Filmation starting from the beginning in landing the Superman contract to the hey days of the 70s and 80s. Everything is
there, from the successes, to the flops laid out in riveting detail.

Included are fun anecdotes like Charles Nelson Reily
wandering the set of “Uncle Croc’s Block” in leopard print short shorts,
replacement Shazam John Davie showing up for work with a moustache and a story that will never make you look at
Schneider from “One Day at a Time” in the same light again.

If describing things like the creation of the animated Star
Trek series weren’t enough Scheimer goes into detail on what didn’t get made,
stuff like a 60s Godzilla cartoon, Metamorpho, a Marx Brothers caroon, Dracula
in Space, the list goes on and on and makes you wish you grow up with those
shows as well.

Also unapologetically is all the lawsuits, the acrimonious
split with original Captain Marvel Jackson Bostwick, the long running suit
between DC comics and Filmation that occurred over (my personal favourite) the
Super 7 cartoon characters.

Honestly if you were a child between the years 1966 and
1987, you’ll find something of an interest in this book.

The later chapters delve of course into the 1980s and the
huge success of programs like Fat Albert, He-Man and the Masters of the
Universe and Bravestarr. My one quibble of the book is that it’s sole
colour chapter is spent on He-Man, however that’s just me and I admit it is a pretty bright marketing move
as He-Man will help sell a lot of these.

In summation, I couldn’t be happier with this book, it is jam
packed with interesting new information on one of my favourite subjects. As a bonus, it’s written in a snappy style that makes you feel that Scheimer is talking directly to you. I buy a
lot of informational books such as this but I rarely read them cover to cover,
Lou Scheimer: Creating the Filmation Generation is one I have trouble putting
down and will likely read more than once.

Ask your local comic shop to order it, otherwise Amazon has the book for $20, which is a steal.

Review : Too much horror business

I can`t think of a better way to kick off a month of
celebrating Halloween than a review of the new book `Too Much Horror
Business`by Metallica s Kirk Hammet. For those not in the know, Hammet is known
to be a voracious collector of all things horror and comic books. More after the jump…

I vividly recall in 1988 talking to toy dealer Bill Brugeman
when his other line clicked, he returned and said “Brian, it’s Kirk
Hammet, I gotta go”.

While I’m sure that would have upset some, I was 17 at the
time and awestruck. Metallica was one of the few bands in constant rotation in
my then surgically attached Walkman, along with the Ramones and Manowar.
Moreover so, it was the idea that Kirk Hammet was a toy collector that
intrigued me more, at this time I hid my collecting from absolutely everyone.

So when it was announced that “Too Much Horror
Business” was coming out , I wanted it not because I’m a fan boy but because i knew he’d have a killer collection and
I wanted to see it.

I could moan for hours about how collector books have
disappointed me over the years, bad research terrible presentation and the worst of the worse, a collector/author
with no sense of humour or irony. Fortunately, none of these are present in
TMHB, it’s attractively laid out, well researched and Hammett’s comments on the
items are often clever and insightful.

Whats more important, this book isn’t some ego trip, it’s a
profile of a passionate collector who just happens to be a famous rock star.
I’d like to think it would be no different a publication if Hammet was a guy who made
his money in the gravel business. Too Much Horror Business explores the evolution of how and
why Hammet loves to collect, his home life, along with the early exposure to
monsters offering an escape. It’s pretty deep and personal, I was surprised how
much I enjoyed those sections.

A second chapter with Kirk discusses “war stories” about the hunt itself, while
none of us will probably own an original Boris Karloff Mummy poster. We
certainly can relate to the story of it`s purchase and the lengths we go to at
times. Hammet also describes the `Celebrity tax` a practice in which a celebrity pays
more for a collectible. I’ve seen this
in action and also seen it when a collector becomes known for his or her
collection, so he’s not paranoid.

Then there is the goodies, Hammet’s monster poster
collection is breath taking and unreal, not only are we shown rare posters from
the twenties and thirties but Hammet throws in personal favorites that aren’t
particularly rare (seeing as they also hang in my rec room) but are things he
loves nonetheless. That is something that i truly enjoyed about this book, the
love shines through, this isn’t a guy collecting treasures for treasure’s sake,
it`s somebody who is buying what he likes.

The chapters range from movie posters, original artwork,
props, and of course toys. Two toys chapters in fact (covering the 1960s and
1970s) that while, not completely comprehensive, are a lot of fun and are peppered with the fun commentary I
mentioned earlier. I will also admit that a couple of pages were so similar to
my upcoming book, that I’m reformatting photos as we speak.

In summation, I can whole heartily recommend this
book for Monster fans and even casual collectors. It`s a fun tome and honestly,
I`d buy any collectible book that looked this good, drawing the line at the
Mattel Sunshine family of course. now they’re scary…..

The 2011 Plaidstallions Retro Awards

It’s time once again for my fake awards show dedicated to what I feel is retro goodness of the past year. All in all, 2011 was a tremendous year for this kind of commerce, so there was lots to choose from.

I’ve also got some news on the book projects and changes to the site for 2012.

Best Films:

I went in with really low expectations but Rise of the Planet of the Apes surprised the heck out of me, mostly because it revitalized the concept so well. I saw it with an audience of 20 years olds and they were enthralled. It’s handling of the subject matter was rarely camp and Andy Serkis was phenomenal as Caesar. It made me crack out my box set once again.

Superhero movies were kind of hit or miss for me this year, I enjoyed Thor despite never having read a Thor comic. I found Green Lantern terribly misguided and passed on the latest X Men movie because of the past two sequels (something I later discovered was a mistake).

The one that made it for me was Captain America: The First Avenger. Comic fans can argue back and forth about costume design changes but the soul of any comic movie is embodiment of the character and I can’t remember when a movie got it so right (oh yeah, Iron Man).

It was also such a relief to take my son to this film and know that Cap wasn’t going to swear (take notes Hal Jordan) or have “Superman 3” type moments of nightmare fuel (Seriously Hector Hammond?). I loved this movie and view it with the same regard I do the first Superman.

Best Books and Magazines

I went back to school this year to study design in anticipation of the books I’m writing. So, most of the books I read were published by Adobe and really have nothing to do with this blog directly.

Some notable exceptions were:

Doctor Who Classics Omnibus I was gifted two of these by lovely wife and it reminded me of how much I loved Doctor Who comics growing up. I find it ironic that I’m wishy-washy on the Davison era and I abhor Colin Baker but their stories are actually my favourite in comic form.

I cannot recommend Shock Cinema magazine enough. A self described “essential guide for any fan of bizarre films and videos, and each issue is crammed with movie reviews, in-depth interviews and original poster art. Shock Cinema covers everything a self-respecting film-junkie could possibly desire — from Cult Movies and Arthouse Oddities, to old fashioned Grindhouse Swill and Underground Obscurities.”

This magazine is easily the best $5 I spend at any given time, it gives me hours of interesting reading and I wish it came out monthly. Seriously where else are you going to read about a movie which starred Mr. Brady as a pervert crank caller?

While i don’t read comics these days, I oddly can’t get enough comics history and that’s where Twomorrow’s “Back Issue!” comes in handy. Each month I get in depth interviews, articles in a beautifully laid out format.

Twomorrows publishing has a great catalog of books that would be right for any 70s kid as well, worth a visit.

Toys

Besides releasing my own action figure, a lot of cool toys made me weak in the knees this year, the two biggest for me however were these.

Bifbangpow Doctor Who

Talk about peanut butter and chocolate, my love for Doctor Who combined with my love for Mego action figures. I know most people want Star Wars or Marvel comics mego figures again but this was my number one want and I can’t wait to buy every single figure BBP knocks out. The Doctor and Styre were toys I HAD to rip off the card immediately and that is just fantastic.

The same thing can be said for EMCE Toys/Diamond Select’s wave two of the Universal Monsters. These figures are a joy, the Mummy is an amazing detailed likeness of Karloff while the Dracula is generic. Given that I’ve played with generic Dracula figures all my life (Lugosi’s likeness isn’t part of the Universal Monsters license) it seems wonderfully fitting. Well worth the $30, I assure you.

DVD

I didn’t get the time for DVDs like I normally do this year but two were unavoidable for me:

Shout Factory has done a spectacular job of releasing Mystery Science Theatre but the Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXII last box set with Sandy Frank “classics” like “Time of the Apes” and “Mighty Jack” really made my 2011 brighter.

Warner Archive is probably going to be on every Retro Awards show I do from now on. This year I adored the Man From Atlantis: Complete TV Movies Collection.

Man from Atlantis was one of the better done TV SF attempts in the 1970s, it starts out with great promise (although the television series gets progressively weirder until it looks like they just run out of juice) the TV movies however are inspired and fun, worthy of a look.

Some big changes this year on Plaidstallions.

I’m going to need more time to develop my book products, I haven’t found a publisher for “Rack Toys” or “Galaxy of Mego” but that only means I’m going to probably start my own publishing company in the coming months.

That means i can only do site updates every other week for the next few months, the blog will remain daily and I’ll still do Fashion Mockery, Toy Love and Rack Toy Tuesday posts but new gallery pages need to be bi weekly for me to retain my sanity.

And that’s it for another year, I’m looking forward to what 2012 brings us, as always thanks for reading!

Review: Age of TV Heroes

From the moment I first saw Jackson Bostwick leap just slightly off camera I’ve been hooked on the combination of TV with superheroes. In my lifetime, I’ve endured them all, the Captain America with the clear shield, the Hulk, Exo Man, even Mandrake and the Spirit movie, I’m an addict and happy to admit it.

Oh Ghetto Man, why are there no further adventures?

That’s why this book by Twomorrows (a publisher who seems to get more of my money than anybody else these days) is pretty amazing to me. I’ve seen other books on TV Superheroes but they were usually kind of lifeless affairs. Age of TV Heroes is a colourful, insightful love letter to this genre.

It’s design gets you lost in the different eras and it’s content could have easily been focused on bigger successes like “Batman” and “The Incredible Hulk” but you see less discussed shows like “Swamp Thing” and “The Tick” in the mix as well.

This is my version of porn.

If that wasn’t enough, authors George Khoury and Jason Hofius have added an incredible chapter about the “Superheroes at Sea World” show (a favourite subject of mine here) that has to be seen to be believed, it’s more than I ever hoped for.

There is no way I can’t rave about this fun book, if you’re a child of the 60s, 70s or 80s, this book will sing to you.
