That&#8217;s why I&#8217;m so excited about this, <i>even if it&#8217;s entirely in French.&nbsp;</i></span><br />
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">Yes, <a href="http://tinyurl.com/yyh5blsu" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Big Jim: un Monde d&#8217;Aventures</a> is from France, not surprisingly though considering that after leaving US toy shelves in 1976, Big Jim would enjoy massive success in Europe for another decade, becoming a Spy, a pirate, a cowboy and eventually heading off into outer space.&nbsp;</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">Author Pascal Pinteau has gone above and beyond with this and created a 286-page publication that explodes with colour. Toy pictures, catalogs, comics all merged into a buffet that I&#8217;ll&nbsp;admit, had me checking eBay.</span></div>
<p></p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://plaidstallions.com/reboot/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/06-ExemplepagesBigJim-1024x682.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img decoding="async" border="0" data-original-height="915" data-original-width="1373" src="http://plaidstallions.com/reboot/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/06-ExemplepagesBigJim-1024x682.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">All of Big Jim&#8217;s eras are covered including his early development at Mattel including a fun&nbsp;part about how he was marketed in the United Kingdom as a spy known as &#8220;Mark Strong: The Man from M.A.T.T.E.L&#8221;. Mark Strong even had his own comic book and this wouldn&#8217;t be the last time Jim got a comic in foreign countries.</span></div>
<p></p>

<a href="http://plaidstallions.com/reboot/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/07-ExemplepagesBigJim-1024x675.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img decoding="async" border="0" data-original-height="924" data-original-width="1402" src="http://plaidstallions.com/reboot/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/07-ExemplepagesBigJim-1024x675.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">The Wolf P.A.C.K era (one of the most popular iterations of Big Jim, especially if you&#8217;re me) gets loving coverage and includes several prototype items that didn&#8217;t make it to market. I had never seen this stuff.&nbsp;</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">Pascal has tracked many former Mattel employees and interviewed them at great length,&nbsp; you get a wonderful visual window into this lines origin, different incarnations and even what the future held. There are so many little fun&nbsp; surprises here, I don&#8217;t want to spoil them.</p>
<p>Fans of &#8220;<b>Masters of the Universe</b>&#8221; will really enjoy the many connections Big Jim had to the line, from character designs to just plain old recycling (Mattel is the king of that), it&#8217;s a&nbsp;fun bit of history.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><br /></span><a href="http://plaidstallions.com/reboot/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/MakingOfCaptureGorille-ESI-1024x727.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img decoding="async" border="0" data-original-height="728" data-original-width="1026" src="http://plaidstallions.com/reboot/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/MakingOfCaptureGorille-ESI-1024x727.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">But that&#8217;s not it, Pascal also spend hundreds of hours creating fun dioramas, These beautiful shots give the book a wonderful &#8220;Wishbook&#8221; feel and well, it truly adds to the charm. Here is a behind the scenes shot of one of those dioramas and below is an exclusive widescreen shot.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">Pascal has clearly written the best book on Big Jim ever done but more importantly, it&#8217;s one of the nicest collector publications I have ever seen. The attention to detail on this book is an example of how much love was put into this, if you like Big Jim, you should get this.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

To summarize, <b><a href="http://tinyurl.com/hm2hfsm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Comic Book Fever</a></b> is&nbsp;<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">&nbsp;</span><span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333;">a &#8220;love letter&#8221; to the author&#8217;s personal golden age of comics, 1976-1986.&#8221;</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333;">Seeing as I learned to read in 1976 (to a <b>Fantastic Four </b>Treasury edition no less), this feels almost like it&#8217;s written for me. However, I&#8217;ve left the world of &#8220;bagging ad boarding&#8221; behind&nbsp;</span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">me</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">&nbsp;</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">decades ago, so let me explain the true appeal of </span><b style="color: #333333; font-family: verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="http://tinyurl.com/hm2hfsm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Comic Book Fever.&nbsp;</a></b><br />

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;">The book is not a dry history of comics or endless discussions on the medium, it&#8217;s actually a celebration of the era and discusses all those little things and perks that made it a special time growing up, Here are just some of the topics discussed:</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">In the past few years, there&#8217;s been talk of a movie and even an animated series but the only thing I give a toss about is a reproduction of the big guy himself. I&#8217;ll explain (and show) more after the jump:</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">Let me start off by saying that <b>Stretch Armstrong</b> is one of my happiest and saddest experiences with toys growing up. A seventh birthday gift, I relentlessly lobbied &nbsp;and loved the hell out of him, even taking him to bed! That&#8217;s when temptation got overpowered me.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">Yup, I <u><b>had</b></u> to know what was inside and ol&#8217; Stretch was never quite the same (the corn syrup was red BTW which added to my state of panic). I was left with a mountain of regret and in my house, it was &nbsp;&#8220;One Strike, You&#8217;re Out&#8221; when it came to breaking a toy.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">So Stretch would haunt me for years.</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/sm4.jpg" width="600" /></p>
<p><span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">Flash forward to the late 90s, the internet and disposable income had me track down a vintage MIB Stretch for a reasonable sum but he was rock solid (as these tend to get) and it wasn&#8217;t the same. I eventually sold him during a purge when I had my first kid.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">When this figure finally got announced, I was excited, which is rare these days. So I conned a good pal into bringing me back one from vacation when they started appearing in NY area Target stores.</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/sm5.jpg" width="600" /><br />
<b><br /></b><br />
<b><span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">So how is he?</span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><b><br /></b><br />
As reproductions go, this is pretty darn swell. The head is a wonderful reproduction of the original.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">There are subtle differences from the original Stretch but they don&#8217;t detract from the fun experience. The box art is understandably different and the Stretch mat is no longer included (I never used it as a kid anyway).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">&nbsp;He&#8217;s slightly smaller but that also means he no longer weighs 80 pounds. There is still some sort of goo inside that hurts like hell if you try to punch him.</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/sm6.jpg" width="600" /><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">His fabric thong is now painted on, so there is no chance of having a nekkid Stretch.</span><br />
<b><span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><br />Speaking of Stretching, does he still work?</span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">Well it&#8217;s hard to take photos and work this thing, so I had to employ a local teenager.</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/sm7.jpg" width="600" /></p>
<p>He does as advertised!<br />
<img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/sm8.jpg" width="600" /></p>
<p><span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">In summation, I&#8217;m very happy to have this guy back in my life and at $25 he was well worth it. If you have kids under ten, Stretch should go under the tree this year.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">They&#8217;re available at Target in the retro games aisle but also through <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EARLEX0/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B01EARLEX0&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=plaidstalli0d-20&amp;linkId=208b081687d9758c5dc28827d8b043a3" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Amazon&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;(of which this blog gets a teensy piece if you click this link) and I heartily recommend this for you.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , sans-serif;">As an added incentive, Jazwares has hinted on Twitter that <b>Stretch Monster</b> will be next. So buy two, they&#8217;re cheap!</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It&#8217;s been a good summer for me and new toys, as two lines based on retro properties came out and tickled my fancy (better than last summer&#8217;s zero).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This week&#8217;s is a slightly bigger deal to me as it&#8217;s based one of my absolute favourite movies of all time, 1980&#8217;s cinematic adaptation of Flash Gordon.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Indepth photo review, a contest and some scant blathering after the jump.</span></p>
<p><a name='more'></a></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">First, my thoughts, as a kid I was pretty upset we never got these on shelves, so this is wish&nbsp;fulfillment.&nbsp;</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">What I like best about these is that <a href="https://twitter.com/bifbangpow?original_referer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bifbangpow.com%2F&amp;profile_id=9460072&amp;tw_i=627192034546167808&amp;tw_p=embeddedtimeline&amp;tw_w=520643136452710400" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">BifBangPow!</a> didn&#8217;t follow the &#8220;<i>What would <b>Kenner</b> do in 1977</i>&#8221;&nbsp;esthetic but chose to make figures in a vintage style. I noticed ZICA&#8217;s name on the package, who made <a href="http://plaidstallions.blogspot.ca/2014/02/spotlight-zica-six-million-dollar-man.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">those awesome 3 3/4&#8243; Six Million Dollar Man figures last year</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So what we get is an action figure line that looks like another player in the toy game in 1979 be it <b>LJN, <a href="http://www.megomuseum.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mego</a>, Multiple, Ideal</b> etc snatched this license and made figures hoping to catch some <b>Star Wars</b> heat.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I&#8217;m a toy history nerd, so this brings me more joy than it probably should.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />Enough chatter from me, judge for yourself and don&#8217;t forget, there is a contest at the bottom.</span></p>
<p>
<img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/fg1.jpg" width="600" /></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It was bothersome to remove these from the card, they&#8217;re nice!</span></p>
<p>
<img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/fg2.jpg" width="600" /></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Cloth capes!</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/fg3.jpg" width="600" /></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Everybody has a nice little extra.</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/fg4.jpg" width="600" /></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The inclusion of Ming&#8217;s robot is a nice touch.</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/fg4b.jpg" width="600" /></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It&#8217;s pants wettingly great to finally have a Brian Blessed Vultan action figure.</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/fg5.jpg" width="600" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/fg6.jpg" width="600" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/fg7.jpg" width="600" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/fg8.jpg" width="600" /></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Some fill in homies from the Filmation line.</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/fg9.jpg" width="600" /></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Ming&#8217;s bowling league of Evil.</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/fg10.jpg" width="600" /><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The whole gang together.</span></p>
<p>
<img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/fg11.jpg" width="600" /></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A gathering of good guys I only wished I could have put together in 1980.</span></p>

<p>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It&#8217;s been a long time since I did a photo review of a modern toy, this is mainly because I don&#8217;t buy that many modern toys.&nbsp;</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Funko&#8217;s Jaws line was a break in that drought. I haven&#8217;t been much into the ReAction stuff as I thought I would be, mostly because the licenses don&#8217;t appeal but also the figure aesthetic hasn&#8217;t always been to my liking.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />However, the stars lined up pretty swell for this line, it&#8217;s the perfect license combined with a nice job. More after the jump:</span></p>
<p><a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I got my set at Entertainment Earth, if you like what you see and want to order, <a href="http://www.entertainmentearth.com/prodinfo.asp?number=FU5552&amp;id=ME-002202116" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">please use this link</a>. I get a tiny but much appreciated kick back from every purchase.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/jaws1.jpg" width="600" /><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The chairman of the board is the Shark, if they just made this and not the figures, I&#8217;d have been satisfied.</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/jaws2.jpg" width="600" /><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The card art is the poster, so you can&#8217;t go wrong but the nicer thing is you can pop the characters off the card and totally get who they&#8217;re supposed to be.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/jaws3.jpg" width="600" /><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I think Quint is the most popular character in the line, I had to wait to get mine.</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/jaws4.jpg" width="600" /><br />
<img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/jaws5.jpg" width="600" />&nbsp;&nbsp;<img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/jaws6.jpg" width="600" />&nbsp;&nbsp;<img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/jaws7.jpg" width="600" />&nbsp;&nbsp;<img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/jaws8.jpg" width="600" /><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">There is no boat for the series but my childhood Fisher Price Adventure People boat will fill in for the Orca.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;<img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/jaws9.jpg" width="600" /><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">An appearance by Aquaman would have greatly altered the ending to the original film.</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/jaws10.jpg" width="600" /></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Height comparison shot with some figures laying around the office.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;<img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/jaws11.jpg" width="600" /><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I guess what I’m trying to say is, Filmation hooked me at an<br />
early age. So much so that I even identified the name “Scheimer” (I dopily mispronounced<br />
it as “Schemer” until adulthood) with joy in the mid 1970s.&nbsp;</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">I cherish this Ark 2 Halloween costume.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Sure, I have love in my heart for the<br />
Kroffts and Hanna Barbera’s of this world but Filmation always remained my<br />
favourite. I never missed a Shazam!, Ark 2 or Tarzan as a kid, hell, I even<br />
regularly watched (but clearly did not grasp) Uncle Croc’s Block when it aired.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So it was pretty much a given that I’d invest in this new<br />
tome. Actually, I bought it twice by accident. What I worried about though, was<br />
how much of this was going to be new to me.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">&nbsp;As the images in this piece suggest,&nbsp;I’m an ardent<br />
filmation collector and fan. &nbsp;I’ve bought every DVD set near and dear to me and watched<br />
the resulting documentaries many times (coincidentally, those great extras also<br />
included Scheimer and Mangels) and I even asked Mr Scheimer questions in person<br />
(he’s a nice man btw). &nbsp;I worried it would<br />
just be a rehash of stuff I’ve heard ad nauseum, I like to call that the “Stan<br />
Lee Situation”.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: x-small;">Lou signed this for me in 2006, I can&#8217;t find it now. Grrr.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Fortunately, my worries were put to rest the minute the book<br />
arrived. I lost nearly an hour pouring through the information, I’m not even<br />
done reading it but I’ve seen enough to say this book is exhaustive and absolutely<br />
captivating.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Scheimer has an incredible memory of the events that shaped<br />
Filmation starting from the beginning in landing the Superman contract to the &nbsp;hey days of the 70s and 80s. Everything is<br />
there, from the successes, to the flops laid out in riveting detail. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Included are fun anecdotes like Charles Nelson Reily<br />
wandering the set of “Uncle Croc’s Block” in leopard print short shorts,<br />
replacement Shazam John Davie showing up for work with a moustache &nbsp;and a story that will never make you look at<br />
Schneider from “One Day at a Time” in the same light again.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">If describing things like the creation of the animated Star<br />
Trek series weren’t enough Scheimer goes into detail on what didn’t get made,<br />
stuff like a 60s Godzilla cartoon, Metamorpho, a Marx Brothers caroon, Dracula<br />
in Space, the list goes on and on and makes you wish you grow up with those<br />
shows as well.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Also unapologetically is all the lawsuits, the acrimonious<br />
split with original Captain Marvel Jackson Bostwick, the long running suit<br />
between DC comics and Filmation that occurred over (my personal favourite) the<br />
Super 7 cartoon characters.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Honestly if you were a child between the years 1966 and<br />
1987, you’ll find something of an interest in this book.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The later chapters delve of course into the 1980s and the<br />
huge success of programs like Fat Albert, He-Man and the Masters of the<br />
Universe and Bravestarr. My one quibble of the book is that it&#8217;s sole<br />
colour chapter is spent on He-Man, however that’s just me and I admit it is a pretty bright marketing move<br />
as He-Man will help sell a lot of these.</span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In summation, I&nbsp;couldn&#8217;t&nbsp;be happier with this book, it is jam<br />
packed with interesting new information on one of my favourite subjects. As a bonus, it&#8217;s written in a snappy style that makes you feel that Scheimer is talking directly to you. I buy a<br />
lot of informational books such as this but I rarely read them cover to cover,<br />
<b>Lou Scheimer: Creating the Filmation&nbsp;Generation</b>&nbsp;is one I have trouble putting<br />
down and will likely read more than once.</span></div>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Ask your local comic shop to order it, otherwise&nbsp;<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/160549044X/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=160549044X&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=plaidstalli0d-20" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Amazon has the book for $20, which is a steal.</a></span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As I mentioned, I accidentally&nbsp;ordered two copies of this<br />
book for myself. I don’t plan on taking one in the tub with me so there is no need for a double. That means the second copy is up for grabs, here is the skill testing<br />
question:</p>
<p><u><b><i><br />
What was your favourite&nbsp;Filmation<br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I can`t think of a better way to kick off a month of<br />
celebrating Halloween than a review of the new book `<b>Too Much Horror<br />
Business</b>`by&nbsp;Metallica&nbsp;s Kirk Hammet. For those not in the know, Hammet is known<br />
to be a voracious collector of all things horror and comic books. More after the jump&#8230;</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span></div>
<p><a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
</p>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I vividly recall in 1988 talking to toy dealer Bill Brugeman<br />
when his other &nbsp;line &nbsp;clicked, he returned and said &#8220;Brian, it&#8217;s Kirk<br />
Hammet, I gotta go&#8221;.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">While I&#8217;m sure that would have upset some, I was 17 at the<br />
time and awestruck. Metallica was one of the few bands in constant rotation in<br />
my then surgically attached&nbsp;Walkman,&nbsp;along with the Ramones and Manowar.<br />
Moreover so, it was the idea that Kirk Hammet was a toy collector that<br />
intrigued me more, at this time I hid my collecting from absolutely everyone.&nbsp;</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0810996596/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0810996596&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=plaidstalli0d-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/tmhb2.jpg" /></a>&nbsp;</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So when it was announced that &#8220;Too Much Horror<br />
Business&#8221; was coming out , I wanted it not because I&#8217;m a&nbsp;fan boy&nbsp;but &nbsp;because i knew he&#8217;d have a killer collection and<br />
I wanted to see it.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I could moan for hours about how collector books have<br />
disappointed me over the years,&nbsp; bad&nbsp;research&nbsp; terrible presentation and the worst of the worse, a collector/author<br />
with no sense of humour or irony. Fortunately, none of these are present in<br />
TMHB, it&#8217;s attractively laid out, well researched and Hammett&#8217;s comments on the<br />
items are often clever and insightful.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0810996596/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0810996596&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=plaidstalli0d-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/tmhb3.jpg" /></a>&nbsp;</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Whats more important, this book isn&#8217;t some ego trip, it&#8217;s a<br />
profile of a passionate collector who just happens to be a famous rock star.<br />
I&#8217;d like to think it would be no different a publication if Hammet was a guy who made<br />
his money in the gravel business. Too Much Horror Business explores the evolution of how and<br />
why Hammet loves to collect, his home life, along with the early exposure to<br />
monsters offering an escape. It&#8217;s pretty deep and personal, I was surprised how<br />
much I enjoyed those sections.</p>
<p></span></p>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0810996596/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0810996596&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=plaidstalli0d-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="http://www.plaidstallions.com/images/tmhb4.jpg" /></a>&nbsp;</span></div>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
<br />
A second chapter with Kirk discusses &#8220;war stories&#8221; about the hunt itself, while<br />
none of us will probably own an original Boris Karloff Mummy poster. We<br />
certainly can relate to the story of it`s purchase and the lengths we go to at<br />
times. Hammet also describes the `Celebrity tax` a practice in which a celebrity pays<br />
more for a collectible. &nbsp;I&#8217;ve seen this<br />
in action and also seen it when a collector becomes known for his or her<br />
collection, so he&#8217;s not paranoid.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Then there is the goodies, Hammet&#8217;s monster poster<br />
collection is breath taking and unreal, not only are we shown rare posters from<br />
the twenties and thirties but Hammet throws in personal favorites that aren&#8217;t<br />
particularly rare (seeing as they also hang in my rec room) but are things he<br />
loves nonetheless. That is something that i truly enjoyed about this book, the<br />
love shines through, this isn&#8217;t a guy collecting treasures for treasure&#8217;s sake,<br />
it`s somebody who is buying what he likes.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The chapters range from movie posters, original artwork,<br />
props, and of course toys. Two toys chapters in fact (covering the 1960s and<br />
1970s) that while, not completely comprehensive,&nbsp; are a lot of fun and are peppered with the fun commentary I<br />
mentioned earlier. I will also admit that a couple of pages were so&nbsp;similar&nbsp;to<br />
<a href="http://www.plaidstallions.com/racktoys/book.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">my upcoming book</a>, that I&#8217;m reformatting photos as we speak.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">In summation, I can whole&nbsp;</span><span style="font-size: small;">heartily&nbsp;recommend this<br />
book for Monster fans and even casual collectors. It`s a fun tome and honestly,<br />
I`d buy any collectible book that looked this good, drawing the line at the<br />
Mattel Sunshine family of course. now they&#8217;re scary&#8230;..</span></span><br />

I saw it with an audience of 20 years olds and they were enthralled. It&#8217;s handling of the subject matter was &nbsp;rarely camp and Andy Serkis was phenomenal as Caesar. It made me crack out my box set once again.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Superhero movies were kind of hit or miss for me this year, I enjoyed Thor despite never having read a Thor comic. Comic fans can argue back and forth about costume design changes but the soul of any comic movie is embodiment of the character and I can&#8217;t remember when a movie got it so right (oh yeah, Iron Man).</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It was also such a relief to take my son to this film and know that Cap wasn&#8217;t going to swear (take notes Hal Jordan) or&nbsp; have &#8220;Superman 3&#8221; type moments of nightmare fuel (Seriously Hector Hammond?). I loved this movie and view it with the same regard I do the first Superman.</span></div>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>Best Books and Magazines</b></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I went back to school this year to study design in anticipation of the books I&#8217;m writing. So, most of the books I read were published by Adobe and really have nothing to do with this blog directly.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Some notable exceptions were:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://plaidstallions.com/reboot/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/50_286391_2_DoctorWhoClassicsOmnibus2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" border="0" height="320" src="http://plaidstallions.com/reboot/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/50_286391_2_DoctorWhoClassicsOmnibus2.jpg" width="211" /></a></div>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></p>
<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1600106226/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=plaidstalli0d-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1600106226"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Doctor Who Classics Omnibus</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> I was gifted two of these by lovely wife and it reminded me of how much I loved Doctor Who comics growing up. I find it ironic that I&#8217;m wishy-washy on the Davison era and I abhor Colin Baker but their stories are actually my favourite in comic form.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://plaidstallions.com/reboot/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/shockcover38.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" border="0" height="320" src="http://plaidstallions.com/reboot/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/shockcover38.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I cannot recommend </span><a href="http://www.shockcinemamagazine.com/"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Shock Cinema magazine</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> enough. A self described &#8220;<em>essential guide for any fan of bizarre films and videos, and each issue is crammed with movie reviews, in-depth interviews and original poster art. Shock Cinema covers everything a self-respecting film-junkie could possibly desire &#8212; from Cult Movies and Arthouse Oddities, to old fashioned Grindhouse Swill and Underground Obscurities</em>.&#8221; </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This magazine is easily the best $5 I spend at any given time, it gives me hours of interesting reading and I wish it came out monthly. Seriously where else are you going to read about a movie which starred </span><a href="http://www.shockcinemamagazine.com/secret.html"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Mr. Brady as a pervert crank caller? </span></a></div>
<p></p>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://plaidstallions.com/reboot/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/BackIssue23_cover_m.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" border="0" height="320" src="http://plaidstallions.com/reboot/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/BackIssue23_cover_m.jpg" width="246" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">While i don&#8217;t read comics these days, I oddly can&#8217;t get enough comics history and that&#8217;s where </span><a href="http://twomorrows.com/index.php?cPath=54&amp;main_page=index"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Twomorrow&#8217;s &#8220;Back Issue!&#8221;</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> comes in handy. Each month I get in depth interviews, articles in a beautifully laid out format.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.twomorrows.com/"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">&nbsp;Twomorrows publishing</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> has a great catalog of books that would be right for any 70s kid as well, worth a visit.</span></div>
<p><strong><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Toys</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Besides releasing my own action figure, a lot of cool toys made me weak in the knees this year, the two biggest for me however were these.</span></p>
<p></p>
<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.entertainmentearth.com/prodinfo.asp?number=BBP12050AA&amp;id=ME-002202116"><img decoding="async" src="http://www.entertainmentearth.com/images//AUTOIMAGES/BBP12050AAlg.jpg" width="450" /></a></div>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>Bifbangpow Doctor Who</b></span></p>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Talk about peanut butter and chocolate, my love for Doctor Who combined with my love for Mego action figures. I know most people want Star Wars or Marvel comics mego figures again but this was my number one want and I can&#8217;t wait to buy every single figure BBP knocks out. </span><a href="http://www.entertainmentearth.com/prodinfo.asp?number=BBP12050AA&amp;id=ME-002202116"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The Doctor and Styre</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> were toys I HAD to rip off the card immediately and that is just fantastic.</span></div>
<p></p>
<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.entertainmentearth.com/prodinfo.asp?number=DC81094AA&amp;id=ME-002202116"><img decoding="async" src="http://www.entertainmentearth.com/images//AUTOIMAGES/DC81094AAlg.jpg" width="450" /></a></div>
<p></p>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The same thing can be said for EMCE Toys/Diamond Select&#8217;s wave two of the Universal Monsters. These figures are a joy, the Mummy is an amazing detailed likeness of Karloff while the Dracula is generic. Given that I&#8217;ve played with generic Dracula figures all my life (Lugosi&#8217;s likeness isn&#8217;t part of the Universal Monsters license) it seems wonderfully fitting.&nbsp;</span><a href="http://www.entertainmentearth.com/prodinfo.asp?number=DC81094AA&amp;id=ME-002202116"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> Well worth the $30, I assure you.</span></a></div>
<p>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>DVD</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I didn&#8217;t get the time for DVDs like I normally do this year but two were unavoidable for me:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://plaidstallions.com/reboot/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/mst3k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img decoding="async" border="0" src="http://plaidstallions.com/reboot/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/mst3k.jpg" /></a></div>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></p>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Shout Factory has done a spectacular job of releasing Mystery Science Theatre but the </span><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005M5OS74/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=plaidstalli0d-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B005M5OS74"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXII</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> last box set with Sandy Frank &#8220;classics&#8221; like &#8220;Time of the Apes&#8221; and &#8220;Mighty Jack&#8221; really made my 2011 brighter.</span></div>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://plaidstallions.com/reboot/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/TheManFromAtlantis_pilot_f.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" border="0" height="320" src="http://plaidstallions.com/reboot/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/TheManFromAtlantis_pilot_f.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></p>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Warner Archive is probably going to be on every Retro Awards show I do from now on. This year I adored the </span><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005DGKBC8/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=plaidstalli0d-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B005DGKBC8"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Man From Atlantis: Complete TV Movies Collection</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Man from Atlantis was one of the better done TV SF attempts in the 1970s, it starts out with great promise (although the television series gets progressively weirder until it looks like they just run out of juice) the TV movies however are inspired and fun, worthy of a look.</span></div>
<p>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>Some big changes this year on Plaidstallions</b>.&nbsp;</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></p>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<p></span></p>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I&#8217;m going to need more time to develop my book products, I haven&#8217;t found a publisher for &#8220;Rack Toys&#8221; or &#8220;Galaxy of Mego&#8221; but that only means I&#8217;m going to probably start my own publishing company in the coming months.&nbsp;</span></div>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></p>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<p></span></p>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">That means i can only do site updates every other week for the next few months, the blog will remain daily and I&#8217;ll still do Fashion Mockery, Toy Love and Rack Toy Tuesday posts but new gallery pages need to be bi weekly for me to retain my sanity.</span></div>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></p>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And that&#8217;s it for another year, I&#8217;m looking forward to what 2012 brings us, as always thanks for reading!</span></div>
