Pod Stallions Minisode 3: Records!

We’re back this week with another mini-sode and we’re talking about one of our favourite subjects, haunting record shops and collecting, of course.

Mini-Sode was inspired by last weekend’s Record Store Day festivities where we talk about experiences, vinyl, collecting philosophies, soundtracks, Doctor Who. Fawlty Towers, Power Records, The Ramones, Wild in the Streets, GI Joe, Rusty Warren, mix tapes and overdue library items.

Battle of the Planets Book and Record Set

While packing up this month, i found this wonderful piece that belongs to my wife. It’s a book and record set from France very similar to our Power Records or I guess the Disney book and records. Canada has a large French population so many books, records and toys native to France were available here.

I am told that the French Battle of the Planets storybooks were in high demand at the local library where my wife grew up.

While there is no real novelty to copying the record (at least for me, I only know swears), I did think it would be fun to scan the great art from the accompanying pages, so transmute after the jump.

“G Force Hair” was our term for bed head in my college dorm.

I want to note that Hoyt Curtain is credited on the inside, so this featured the original series theme. I am left to assume that the voice actors may actually be the ones who dubbed the series for France as well.

1 Rover 1 is the anti-Scrappy Doo in my book, I’d buy any piece of merchandise I see of him.

I’m pretty smitten with the art in this, i can’t believe it’s been in a drawer for 20 years.

The aforementioned Giant Dinosaur, Spectra had style…

Zoltar being a girl is one of the more mind blowing cartoon reveals of all time, I did not see that coming. I just thought he had really full lips…

This was called “Tornado Fighter” on Gatchaman. I’m not sure why Zoltar is surprised they’re doing this, they always do this…

Wow, they even broke out the fiery Phoenix for this one.

Phew!…Wait, robots don’t sweat!

And the world is saved until around 4:30 tomorrow, when it will be in peril yet again.

This 1978 Toy Fair ad for Peter Pan (Power) Records, tells us what we already knew as kids, in that they were awesome but it also gives us a look at some of the store displays used to market them:

Man, that display doesn’t miss anything, Star Trek, Superman even Planet of the Apes! I wish this shot was in color.

Growing I don’t ever remember a display this large for these things, it just didn’t happen. Mostly I remember seeing book and record sets by the cash registers. If I seen something like this as a child, I imagine it’d set off some sort of alarms in my head.

This is the Hasbro booth for 1975, that’s the suer awesome G.I Joe Skyhawk zooming over these gentleman’s heads. From left to right they are Jim Camilleri, Jack Kipperman and Merril Hassenfeld, the man who put the H in Hasbro. Neat!

B. Goldberg and J. Romain are off the see the Wizard, the Mego Wizard of Oz line that is! While I’m elated to find this picture I wish I had more shots of the legendary Mego Toy Fair showrooms. This one looks pretty swell however.

The Future is Fantastic! A representative from Saalfields shows off their latest offering, based on the new sicence fiction series “Space:1999” to the buyer from Bradlees. I need to review that for colouring book theatre….

Mort Liebman displays his Star Trek record, one of the hottest items in the toy field. This is the power records booth and I am drooling! Check out those Planet of the Apes and G.I. Joe store displays, amazing.
