On the 4th of September 1975, one of the most ambitious and expensive Science Fiction genre TV series of the 1970s debuted. Space:1999 was a British production but with US leads hoping to attract an American network. The networks passed, and 1999 came to our screens via first-run syndication. The show was the creation of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, who morphed a second-season concept of their amazing UFO series into its own thing. The enduring popularity of Star Trek in syndication was a big motivator. Ben Cooper Dr. Strange Halloween Costume (eBay Affiliate Link) __

Doctor Strange got some merch in the late 1970s and early 1980s, likely due to his 1978 CBS TV movie that did not go to series. The Ben Cooper merch (including the Jigger) has this weirdly angry face for some reason. I think it works, but I have always pictured the character as a cool cucumber.

Tomland Space Raiders (eBay Sponsored Link)

Tomland was one of the bravest and cheekiest toy companies out there. The majority of the output was just copying the work of others but in an awesome way. These little guys had multiple iterations but I don’t see a lot under this banner. I’m not certain if the price is even achievable, but I’m mostly a window shopper.

I gotta tell you, strolling into my Catholic grade school with this on would not go well in 1980.  Nowadays, I can’t think of Barry Manilow without thinking of a co-worker and delightful friend from Wales who loves him dearly and calls him “Barrrrrreeee,” which is all I think about when I see his face. I think that’s called “zen.”

Mattel Tarzan figure set (Sponsored Link) —

I think this may be one of my favourite ’70s figure sets ever. I mean that sincerely. I grew up with Big Jim, and the Filmation Tarzan cartoon is still a passion of mine. To get my set, I had to negotiate with my long-time friend Mark until 3 a.m in a crappy Toronto airport hotel. Sometimes, the stories become intertwined with the toy, and that’s why we collect.

I don’t run into figural banks much here in Canada (other than Col. Sanders, which, OMG, did everyone in the country get one?), and that’s probably a good thing because I am powerless against them. I am worried it will be a repeat of the “Blow Mold Obsession” with these banks, and well, I don’t have any more room.

Totally pumped about Mego Meet next Week! I’ll be there handing out Lincoln Monsters Buttons and spritzing with you samples of  my new cologne “Mantooth.” It’s a vitriolic stench but once you used to it, you’ll be fine.

Kenner Knight Rider and Street Hawk in 1985 Palitoy Catalog-

As a fan of the short-lived television series “Street Hawk,” I was excited to discover some unproduced toy items hidden in the pages of this 1985 Palitoy/Parker Brothers catalogue.  The series launched that year in the US and would be cancelled after 13 episodes.

Kenner, we already had a toy hit with Knight Rider (see above), which Street Hawk was definitely patterned after and swept up the rights.

Kenner did manage to get the Motorcycle to store shelves but the action figures and playsets would not make it to the market. For a sample of what that would have looked like, this seller has the Street Hawk Norman Tuttle prototype. 

The planned Kenner Street Hawk figures didn’t come to fruition but thanks to Play Skool  in India and Glasslite of Brazil, we did get an “O Ring” Jessie Mach and Street Hawk.

1982 GI Joe Playset from the JC Penney Catalog

One of my favourite things about Department store wishbooks is when they snuck in an exclusive item. Sometimes this was whole figures like the Mego Secret Identity figures; other times, carry cases or even playsets meant to be used with the toys unofficially. That’s the case with the Mobile Command HQ playset from the 1982 JC Penny wishbook. 

Despite having GI Joe’s logo on the photo and nothing but Joe Toys, this is not, to my knowledge, officially licensed.  It is merely a generic concept playset meant for all Military figures like SGT. Rock by REMCO is specifically mentioned. 

It’s construction makes it look a lot like the Mego Pocket Superheroes Bat Cave, but they aren’t the same. Perhaps they used the same factory because this is also quite thin plastic.

I have to tell you as a kid, I would have BEEN ALL OVER THIS. I was heavy into that first wave of RAH Joes and I’ve always been a playset nerd. Sadly, there are no JC Penneys in Canada, and by the time RAH added playsets, I was in the 8th grade.
