I’ve never owned these toys but have always been obsessed with them since I saw them at my friend Richard’s House. None of it makes sense and none of it has to, I always loved the comic book ad for this, it also makes zero sense, even to a kid.

AHI Sold a lot of Zing-Wings based on pop culture, like Star Trek and Spider-Man. The word “Frisbee” was the one we all used but all the other toy companies had to make up their own word. 

Tomland Bionic Woman Knock Off (eBay Link) —

For those not in the know, Tomland Toys was a company not exactly all that concerned about lawsuits. Case in point, they produced the second most galling copyright theft next to “Mr. Rock” by Lincoln International. “Sonic Woman” was a Bionic Woman clone. She wears a red track suit and has two silver limbs. I love her.

Bootleg Carnival Plush C3-PO (eBay Link) —

I don’t have words. I’m not a big Star Wars guy, but I am a fan of bootlegs and Carnivals (and, as an aside, Corndogs), so as Khan said, “It Tasks Me!” But I’m probably going to forget about it.

Fireball XL-5 Paper Dolls (eBay Link) —

I’m too young for Gerry Anderson’s Fireball X-L5, but I admire its mid-century “retro-future” charm. It’s so delightful. I know the entire theme tune and love seeing the detail in the merchandise. Lovely stuff but I don’t really know the series all that well.

Milton Brady Pink Lady (Minus Jeff) Boardgame (eBay Link) —

“Pink Lady” were a Japanese sensation before they got their variety series in the US. What blows my mind more here is not that they got a game but that Milton Bradley was also doing board games in Japan? I learned today! I deserve a reward of some kind!

Mego Klingon Card Variant (eBay Link) —

I guess for a brief time in the UK, Palitoy ran out of Klingon Cards and just created this jazzy sticker to go over it. Just a running change in a company’s day-to-day problem solving, now an insane adult collectible. I won’t make fun; I love this sort of thing, and the Mego Klingon is a brilliant action figure.

One of the pages that I drooled over in the 1980 Consumer’s Distributing catalogue would be this spread of Mego (Well here in Canada, Grand Toys), Star Trek the Motion Picture and Buck Rogers toys.

I was that kid who loved the Motion Picture merchandise mainly because of the Marvel comic. Buck Rogers was also “must-see TV” in my household.

Consumers had a great assortment of Mego Star Trek merchandise, including four of the Aliens. All of the Aliens were sold in Canada because Grand Toys paid upfront for merchandise with a letter of credit, so even though Star Trek was a dud for Mego, the second wave hit Canadian shores regardless.

For Buck Rogers, I vividly remember clipping out the figure sets (which came in little brown catalogue boxes that I wish I could find) and pasting them to my Christmas list that year.

However, the Mego Buck Rogers line was not to be. My parents decided I had too many figure lines. They had a good case, citing the whole “Battlestar Galactica” debacle (had to have the figures, never gelled with the show). I really couldn’t find a loophole, so despite my love for the series (I still love it!), I had to settle for playing with my friend’s Buck figures when he visited.

The one odd thing about the Mego Buck Rogers assortment in the consumers’ catalogue is the omission of the Star Fighter, quickly the most popular vehicle in the line. Instead, however, the Land Rover is pretty darn swell.
