Here’s a first look at the factory sample of the Evil of Count Dracuia figure. We sent our designs to the factory, and they knocked us out with their attention to detail!

Lincoln Monsters in the 1976 Galoob Catalog

It wouldn’t be Halloween without me waxing poetic about my favourite monster toy line of all time, the Lincoln Monsters.

This year I came across one of my absolute grails, in the form of finding the 1976 Galoob toys catalog. Although Galoob was later known for licensed items and things such as Micro Machines, 1976 saw them as more of an importer of Hong Kong novelties including items produced by Lincoln International.

Here they are featured among the Lincoln Action Soldier toys and other Rack Toy merchandise. Galoob was definitely the the company that got the following memorable Montgomery Ward’s catalog spread from 1976:

Lincoln Monster Mystery

I’ve been been pretty much under the assumption that I’d seen it all when it came to Lincoln Monsters. Well, that fell apart this weekend when I got this photo emailed me to me.

These are the four perfect as the day they were made Monster figures shrunk wrapped to a card. To me, it looks like some sort of Catalog item, but which one and when?

If anybody can sheld some light and remembers getting the monsters in this fashion, please drop us a line. I’m delighted to have another weird mystery with regards to these kooky figures.

Revenge of the Lincoln Monsters!

Life is strange, if you had asked me 30 days ago if there was going to be a Lincoln Monster update in the Halloween blog posts this year, I’d have answered no.

Truth was, there wasn’t much by the way of things to update. Then all hell broke loose and I’ve got more than I could ever hope to share, including the reveal of the Dracula solid box and the amazing Spiegel mailer set with it’s girl victim, not to mention new variations! More after the jump:

Like I said, October 2012 has been an embarrassment of riches for me when it came to Lincoln Monsters, although that’s probably the wrong term as some of this stuff has pretty much forced me into “Toy Collecting Retirement” for at least a year.

First and foremost, here is a group photo that I have been dying to take for some time.

For the first time ever (at least on the web) here is a complete set of Lincoln Solid Boxes, including the Lord of Carpathia himself:

Dracula! This thing has haunted me for years, so I’m overjoyed to bringing it’s beauty to the interwebs. But that isn’t it, not by a long shot, the whole site got a great deal prettier this October with shots of ….

The Girl Victim gift set! we’ve got shots of the 1975 Spiegel catalog set complete with monsters and cardboard. This is honestly something I never expected to turn up but October brings out the Monster toys!

That’s not all, we’ve cataloged more variants this year including like the Mummies above but also the three versions of Dracula, Wolfman and Frankenstein too.

All that plus new improved photos, commentary, some fan art and much more.

The Victim Mystery Solved

For years now, it’s been bugging me if this 6 inch fashion doll that has been dubbed “The Victim” and said to be part of the Lincoln Monsters line of toys was a real thing or not. I had heard from people over the years who claimed to have her as a kid or saw her in an obscure catalog. However, nobody could honestly place where.

That is until I met my pal Corey at last weekend’s Megomeet toy show and he handed me the 1975 Spiegel catalog, a gap in my already over the top catalog library. And this is the first thing I saw:

There she was, the “girl victim”, her size and outfit have always suggested to me that she was some sort of unsold Dawn knockoff, merely added to the offering but she was marketed as something the monsters had their way with.

I still can’t believe that this was a thing, part of me doubted it merely because it seemed so wrong headed, especially when you consider all the trouble Aurora got into with their girl victim model kit in 1971. It seems weird that both the Spiegel buyer and the company repping Lincoln in the United States hadn’t noticed a national boycott.

Tomland Famous Monsters of Legend Archive Launches

It may seem odd to launch a Monster themed page in December but it’s Halloween all year round at my place and it’s rare these days that I get this excited, so it simply couldn’t wait.

Tomland is probably best known for the Star Raiders, an 8″ Mego like line of action figures clearly meant to mimick Star Wars. However, they also produced a very fun line of Monster Action figures and released two sets with what seems like a few year’s gap between them.

The first series consisted of four figures, most have seen them as they were readily available across the country in stores such as K-Mart.

However, the second series, produced in 1980 seems to have seen almost no distribution. It consisted of 8 figures, the first four characters from series one (now in “glow in the dark” format) and four new characters which were pretty big names. Namely Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy and the Wolfman.

What makes this even sweeter for me is that Tomland seemed to be directly copying the Lincoln Monsters which most would know are my favourite monster toys ever. Sadly, they are also some of the hardest to find.

So I’m especially proud to be able to, for the first time (to my knowledge), present the entire set of Tomland Famous Monsters of Legends figures in their own archive. Got something I don’t have and want to share? Email me!

Monster Contest Winners Announced

Last week, if you recall I held a contest for my newly printed Monster trading cards, folks just had to answer this question Who is your favourite Monster?

Well I got so many great replies (although I’m sorry, the correct answer was Frankenstein ) and I’m happy to announce that everybody who entered gets a set of Azrak Hamway and Lincoln International Monster cards along with super secret Plaidstallions card #37.

Thanks to everybody for entering, especially those of you who went the extra mile and explained their choice, you didn’t have to do that and it was fun to read. Look for more contests in the very near future.

Even more Monster Love at Plaid Stallions

In my quest to improve the site I actually updated two galleries so much that I thought it deserved it’s own Friday update, both relate to my personal obsession with cataloging 70s Monster Toys.

Firstly, I’ve finally expanded the Azrak Hamway Monsters section of the site and given everything galleries including other stuff like the Jigglers, windups, vintage ad gallery and Bend ‘Ems. I still have a lot of stuff to add so if anybody has something I don’t, I’d greatly welcome pictures.

Secondly (and to me more importantly) I’ve created new galleries for my personal favourite, The Lincoln International Monsters. There you’ll find new updated galleries, photos, information and a little insight as to the why I’m obsessed with the line so much. The Tomland Mini Monsters

Happy to showcase these weird little figures, produced in 1979 by a UK company called Tomland (under the umbrella of Marx) these stylin’ mini monsters were based on my beloved Lincoln International Monsters. I don’t know why and I honestly don’t care, I’m just pleased that they were. Tomland made their own 8″ versions of the Lincoln Monsters as well. More after the jump

Here is a comparison shot of the Lincoln Mummy with the Tomland Mini Monster, it’s remarkable that five years later another company would imitate the style of these figures for another series. As mentioned before Tomland even made revamped versions of the 8″ monsters as well, they glowed in the dark.
This Skeleton character (whom my daughter has dubbed “Skelly”) never had an 8″ counterpart, at least not one anybody has seen, pity. Mini Monsters Dracula is the spitting image of Lincoln Dracula right down to the signature blue bags under his eyes. Frankenstein looks far healthier as a mini monster, he almost looks like Michael Richards.

The Tomland Wolfman shares the gleeful smile of his Lincoln counterpart.

Super Monsters on Sale

Time to dig through the vault and see some real Monster bargains when it comes to the many, many monster action figure lines we were treated to in the 1970s. Above is a great ad featuring the Azrak Hamway World Famous Super Monsters. As you can see they are mingled in with the Mego Super Foes (which makes sense) It looks to me like that early wolfman is shirtless but it could just me the resolution of the ad.

This ad for a store called “The Broadway” has them at the same price as the Mego World’s Greatest Superfoes which seems pretty high but I don’t know what the rent was like in Los Angeles in 1974.

Hmmm, K Mart has the Monsters at $1.57, that’s good but I can do better.

Now “Keslings Drugs” has four or the Super Monsters for the tidy price of $1.29 but I’ve never heard of that store so I’d better keep looking.

$0.88! now that’s more like it, I’ll take ten of each please. The ad even mentions the Creature, I could cry.

Super Monster Bend Ems, two for a buck! That’d keep me busy now, let alone then.

My favourite this year has to be this ad for the Lincoln International Monsters on sale for a buck at payless. It’s rare to find any advertising relating to this awesome line of figures so this one really made me geek out more than usual. What can I say? I’m an easily pleased man.
