The caption reads “LJN is aiming for success in the forthcoming movie “Dune” as this reproduction of a scene from the film in the toy company’s Toy Fair showroom proved.”

The article goes on to mention “LJN will also be involved in producing
a line of products for “Dune,” a Universal Pictures release. The
movie is based on a best selling science fiction novel which already has
several sequels in print. It seems quite probable that Dune will be a long-term line for LJN.”

Pod Stallions 124: David Lynch

The Elephant Man, Frank Booth, Agent Cooper and Bob, Sailor and Lula and the big sweaty Baron with bad skin. These are just some of the denizens in the film world of David Lynch. It’s safe to say the works of Lynch weren’t everyone’s cup of coffee.

And that’s as it should be, with most left-of-center output. But his impact can’t be denied, and as weirdos and movie freaks ourselves, it seemed appropriate to celebrate the late auteur. (Plus, the man himself is someone we’d happily spend time with).

But don’t think this is the snooty, art-house ep of PS; we still manage to get Richard Lynch and 80s underwater monster flicks in, too. The owls are not what they seem, but this is a fine cup of Pod Stallions. Drink full and descend!

Kenner Bionic Woman Designer Dresses (eBay Link) —

Catalogue mailer items are one of those things I admire, and as a toy collector, I feel they add a charm to everything. I don’t collect Bionic Woman, but I think this set is unique. yes, I know water stains are gross; I get it, but it’s a cool one-of-a-kind item, and I can see past that.

Remco “The Bad Guys” Chopper (eBay Link) —

Remco was good at sneaking into a kid’s toy box. It wasn’t GI Joe, but it felt close, and there is no way your mom could tell Cobra from the Bad Guys logo. No, I won’t believe you had a “SUPERMOM” that could do that. If so, deep envy, mad respect. I hate you.

Batman String Art (eBay link) 

Remember a couple of weeks back when I threatened an “All Batman Crafting” installment? Yeah, I was not kidding. String Art seems to have dipped severely since the middle 1970s but it sure did peak. I love stuff like this and I also love how the box design is lazy but also letting the character art sell it.

Lone Ranger Carson City Playset (eBay Link) —

I don’t collect the fantastic Gabriel Lone Ranger toy line but I do admire the care in which it was made. Just look at this gorgeous thing, it’s huge too! 

Dune Panini Stickers and album (eBay link) –

Imagine the lucky kid who got the “boil scraping” sticker, which I assume was gold foil or the hologram sticker of a heart plug being pulled out. Hooo doggie, Dune was not understood by it’s licensors.

It’s hard to believe that toy makers thought the next merchandising blitz would come from a David Lynch film but that’s exactly what happened in 1984. Dune got the full treatment with colouring books, bed sheets and of course a selection of action figures produced by LJN.

The movie wasn’t particularly kid (or for that matter general public) friendly and as a result the spice warriors of Dune resided in the clearance aisle.

What’s perplexing to me is most of this stuff got made, yet the gigantically more kid friendly “Last Starfighter” toy line never saw the light of day. Aggghhh!

“The Big Baron” sounds like a jolly fellow or a regional burger chain that is no longer. The lead villain of Dune is a hyper obese monster covered in oozing boils that sucks blood kids. Don’t try to put perfume on this pig Grosset and Dunlap.

I think I’ll draw a little suit on this make it a Dale Cooper paper doll, then I can sell it to my unsuspecting podcast co-host for triple the price.

I think the better question is “Who is overacting in this scene?”

Send your friends these postcards and guaranteed they’ll call you and ask “WTF did you just send me?”

I’m guessing the good people at Grosset and Dunlop had their work cut out for them and they started to grasp at straws while pouring through the stills. This can be evidenced by the amount of times that the Duke’s pug appears in this thing. I forgot he had a dog but clearly the one thing this book wants you to know is, the (oddly happy looking) Atreides family wuvs their puppy…oh yes they do….

Oh yeah.

This book is also great for “ridiculous depictions of Patrick Stewart” which actually makes it way, way better. If it were nothing but strange drawings of him, it would be considered a national treasure.
