If you’re like me, September is filled with memories of being dragged to the mall to try on your new “Back to School” ensembles. My own mother was partial to “Marks and Spencers” or as I referred to it “Corduroy Hell”.  

 On this wonderful occasion let’s look at the best outfits 1975 would force you to try on and try on and try on. More after the jump!



Dressing your daughter like an ironing board cover was a brief fad that disappeared with the CB craze.

It’s miniature Oscar Goldman and Steve Austin!


That virginity is not going anywhere.


Outfits such as these provided a soft launch to a career in the foodservice industry. Also, I’ll never get over the free use of the word “Chubbies” back then.

One of the biggest downers of the summer ending is back to school shopping, getting dragged from (Non Toy) store to store,  forced to try things on, it’s more than your seven year old mind can take.

That’s why I’ve prepared this handy trip down memory lane, once your children see what we had to endure, they’ll count their blessings and think twice before complaining.

I found this ruler on Ebay a few months ago, i collect Superhero school supplies (sorry ladies, I’m spoken for) but the more interesting thing to me was the hi-jacking of the Mego World’s Greatest Superheroes packaging art.

Many of these images were specifically drawn by Mego and didn’t appear on other company products, while the seller told me it was a foreign mail in promo, I was leaning towards knock off.



Leave it my buddy Rob over at the Aquaman Shrine to solve this mystery without even being asked. He submitted this, a packaged Aquaman pencil sharpener using the same art. That’s some unlicensed Hong Kong goodness there….

I can’t believe summer’s over! Being a September baby I kind of enjoyed the whole back to school season as a kid, here is me doing my best to blend into the walls of my grade school.


 My mother took this same picture without fail until I asked her to stop, this morning my son asked if I could not walk him to class, which i capitulated, albeit begrudgingly.


So what better time to look back at the bright side of vintage back to school, lots of eye candy after the jump!

School Supplies can be Fun! Like these Alco Superhero sharpeners and erasers. These kinds of things always made BTS shopping more enjoyable.





OK, Clothes Shopping Kinda Sucked: I’ll admit that I didn’t dig this angle of BTS until high school, especially because my mom seemed to dress me exclusively at “Marks and Sparks” (I think she may have been a shareholder). 


The only upside of this was I was often placated with a toy, usually a Star Wars figure or a Micronaut. I still have the last toy my mom ever bought me BTS shopping in the fifth grade, a Micronauts Pharoid with Time Chamber.

 
 Lunchboxes Rule: Every couple of years I picked my theme, I started my school career with Hong Kong Phooey and I ended it with the Black Hole, which I covered in “Clash of the Titans’ stickers I got in sugar crisp. It was an important choice in your life, I remember coveting it.



Oh and this Sunday, I’ll be setting up at Canadian Toy Con/Mego North. It’s a great vintage toy show with a classic arcade! I’ll be selling vintage toys, copies of my book Rack Toys and Brick Mantooth action figures. Please come bye and say hi!
