Cryotron Carry Case (eBay Link) —

This was a Sears Canada exclusive, and I remember that catalogue fondly as it was the first time I saw the Mego Black Hole Humanoid and Old B.O.B.

Despite it kind of looking like a “Space Toilet Seat” I dream of finding one packed with figures like the happy kid below. Dang, I even had that shirt and haircut as a kid.

AHI Batman Communicator Rack Toy (eBay Link)

It’s pretty funny that it took me this long to realize these are the same communicators from the Remco Batman Utility belt despite me knowing this is the same company. I’d like to pretend that I just forgot this fact but I’m not sure.

What I am sure of is no kid ever heard a damn thing on the other end of this.

GI Joe Avenger Pursuit Craft (eBay Link)-–

I was five when this toy came out and as I’ve mentioned before, I was ALL IN ON THE SUPER ADVENTURE TEAM! Teaming up GI Joe, Bulletman and Atomic Man to fight Space cavemen? I was all in. I only ever got one vehicle from this line and that was the capture copter, I still treasure that toy. However, these boxes with their glorious art really hit me. I just have a serious space issue these days.

Fisher Price McDonaldland playset (eBay Link)—

I was planning to cool it on Mcdonald’s stuff this week, but I was recently at a collector’s house and saw one of these. I had no idea they were a thing but now I need a Hamburglar LP figure more than I want air.

Superhero Notebooks (eBay Link) —

Back in the 90s, there was a cool collectibles shop in Toronto called “Fun-O-Rama,” and it was a treasure trove of stuff like this. Superhero notebooks, finger rings, pens and finger puppets were all dirt cheap. I used that stuff like they were simple office supplies and well, seeing the price of this lot? I regret nothing except that I didn’t spend more money at Fun-O-Rama.

Canadian Superhero Pepsi Cups

For the last two decades I’ve been quietly collecting these promotional cups given away by Pepsi in the 1970s in Canada. Similar to the US cup promotions but a much smaller character choice, different design and made in Canada. (update I’ve just been told they were made available at the restaurants in Zeller’s department stores)

My mantra on these was to never buy them online but find them in the wild at the many toy shows, antique malls and flea markets I regularly haunt. I think I’ve put together a complete set and thought it would be fun to showcase them. More after the jump.

Batman and Robin are favourites of mine, mainly because Batman has the same art as the Mego box and they were definitely faves as a kid. Batman was hard to find.

Superman and Wonder Woman were also tough for me to track down. I think this set took me ten years or so to piece together but i doubt i ever paid more than $5 for any of these and it sometimes was the only thing I came home with.

I rarely ever run into either of these two in the wild.

Aquaman and Flash round out a complete set (I think?), they are also the most common ones. My local flea market had like 50 of the Flash in the 1990s for some unknown reason and I’ve seen so many Aquamen in my travels.

I keep looking hoping to find more characters in this series but I’m pretty certain it stopped at these six. Hopefully I’m wrong and there is more to hunt because that’s the fun part.

I was elated to find this ad full of Ourway Studios Superhero and Planet of the Apes merch in a Japanese issue of StarLog.

Especially mind warping is those Superhero stamp albums, which I totally had and collected as a kid. I wonder if they still accept orders……

World’s Greatest Super School Supplies

I found this ruler on Ebay a few months ago, i collect Superhero school supplies (sorry ladies, I’m spoken for) but the more interesting thing to me was the hi-jacking of the Mego World’s Greatest Superheroes packaging art.

Many of these images were specifically drawn by Mego and didn’t appear on other company products, while the seller told me it was a foreign mail in promo, I was leaning towards knock off.

Leave it my buddy Rob over at the Aquaman Shrine to solve this mystery without even being asked. He submitted this, a packaged Aquaman pencil sharpener using the same art. That’s some unlicensed Hong Kong goodness there….

I remarked last week about how impressed I was that Sea World included Aquaman’s bride into their show. Here is a great shot of her showing off her water skiing skills, which makes total sense.

Speaking of appearances: I’ll be setting up next weekend at Canadian Toycon in Burlington. Special guests include Casper Van Dien (“Starship Troopers”), Caitlin and Spike from Degrassi and my pal Monstermatt Patterson. Come by and pick up a copy of Rack Toys or try some of my delicious preserves.

It’s been a while since I’ve had a Mall Appearance submission (l’il help?) so I was happy to find this image of the Justice League of Sea World in my stacks. I never got to see this for myself, so I love getting images like this. I’ll never get over the inclusion of Mera into this show, somebody cared.

AHI Superfriends Buggy

After almost three decades of toy collecting, not many vintage toy sightings make me want to wet my pants. This past few weeks I’ve had the pleasure of almost losing control several times, first with the Tomland Monsters and then followed up by this, the AHI Superfriends car in glorious detail.

The first thing I want to say after “Gahhh!” is “Aquaman”! While Wonder Woman is strangely absent, you have no idea how much Aquaman gets the shaft in 70s merch. Well, read this if you’re curious.

I am assuming this is some sort of parade situation and the A listers are strutting their stuff.

AC’s been hitting the red bull.

I can’t not love this toy, it may be the crappiest remote controlled car ever but it’s just so crazy and colorful. One of these days, it shall be mine!

No it’s not the story of a Jewish family given strange powers after an accidental dose of Gamma radiation (well, not until I sell that screenplay) but just a series of cool super hero merch from the mid seventies boom:

Classic Adams Batman, very nice!

It’s nice to see modern Wonder Woman on something, I noticed a lot of 70s stuff used Golden Age clip art.

And of course, Shazam! New to the team and hot on television. It’s somewhat cruel but I get kind of a kick pointing this stuff out to my pal Rob at the Aquaman Shrine. Rob has a well grounded theory that the addition of Shazam pretty much screwed the King of Atlantis out of rightful merchandise. He’s totally right but I always enjoy his “Agggghhh!” type comments when I post this stuff, sorry man.
