Ice Pirates Licensing ad from a 1983 toy publication

This ad in a toy industry publication from June 1983 attempts to find licensees for the upcoming film “The Ice Pirates.”

Nobody bit, and thus, the world failed its only chance of having a “Bruce Vilanch” action figure. While I mock, it’s important to note I would have KILLED for a toy of the recycled car from the “Logan’s Run” TV series.

LJN Toyfair 1984 Dune Showroom

The caption reads “LJN is aiming for success in the forthcoming movie “Dune” as this reproduction of a scene from the film in the toy company’s Toy Fair showroom proved.”

The article goes on to mention “LJN will also be involved in producing
a line of products for “Dune,” a Universal Pictures release. The
movie is based on a best selling science fiction novel which already has
several sequels in print. It seems quite probable that Dune will be a long-term line for LJN.”

I remember this wave of Marvel figures being a big deal then. Collectors hadn’t seen Marvel action figures since Secret Wars a few years earlier and this felt like a drought was over. Since then, I don’t think we’ve had a single year where Marvel characters didn’t get action figures. 

Marvel’s licensing department was in fine form for this year with relationships with many companies that are sadly no longer.

Here’s that ToyFair list stitched together.

I will admit to being really excited about that Captain America film. Even when I saw a bootleg copy of it in ’91, I still thought it had merit. Apparently there is a different cut to this that director Albert Pyun championed. I hope I can see that version. 

I bought this mainly because of the costumed character photos for my still unfinished book Mall of Justice.

From a 1984 Toy Industry publication, we have this excellent ad for Street Hawk, which ABC was banking on being the next Knight Rider (narrator: “It wasn’t.”) However, I tuned in every week, and so did a lot of kids, so we mourned some of the cool toys they had in the pipeline. This is an ad for Hong Kong toy maker FairToy International. FairToy International makes various dolls, including one that strongly resembles Barter Toys  Dynaman. Dynaman is one of the more prolific (and fuzziest) GI Joe Knockoffs and ran under different names. He also made history by being the basis for the “Gay Bob” doll in 1977.

Fairland packaged the toy line to order from foreign distributors, as evidenced by the array of names on the various accessory packs. Another name would be “Johnny Strong” or even “Bruce.”  It might seem strange to see a company selling such products in 1983 but 12″ figure ranges like this had longer legs outside North America. 

Fairland also had their own Big Jim Knock Off, who had a popular Western Line in Europe for many years. These 10″ figures are simply called “West” and, according to my pal Steve Moore, are very cheaply made. I’ve seen that boxed horse a bunch of times, so this stuff hit our shores.

 Of course, they had their own Barbie Clone in Christina. Many of those outfits (especially the Western gear) look like straight-up copies of what Mattel was doing at the time. 

FairlandToy also created Adventure Man, a 2000s Knock Off of GI Joe that sold quite well.

DORMEI IS THE BEST! (1983

Continuing exploring this 1983 Hong Kong Toy Trade publication, this week, we focus on the DorMei Factory, famous for making rubber dinosaurs, giant bugs, and Sharks that were often sold by marketed by American companies like Imperial Toys.

I have to say that I had a lot of those rubber bugs, at one point a local bakery had them on the counter with a bag of Jimmies in their abdomens. I’ve also wanted that Lizard man creature for a long time. He reminds me of “It! The Terror from Beyond Space.”

I’m not sure “Crying” is the word they should have used here but I see how they got there. I had tons of those Dinosaurs and I imagine DorMei made them by the millions. They would also go on to produce a truly memorable Godzilla Knock Off in 1984, see below:

Strange Change kits were introduced in 1974 by MPC, it’s a hybrid toy/model kit with a little horror and science fiction sprinkled in. It surprises me that these weren’t a bigger deal. It seems that it never got past the original three designs which are a Vampire, a Mummy and an extremely clever time machine.

Perhaps it was the era, I can see such a concept being a bigger hit in the 1960s. Strange Change kits have however been reissued many times.
