Fisher Price Adventure People 1976

Continuing with this cracker of a catalogue I got from a chain called “Cardinal” (If you didn’t see the previous bed-wetting spread, it’s here). Just like the action figure page, I am in love with their curating of the Fisher Price Toy lines.

I mean, the Little People are incredibly beloved, but this spread of Adventure People is my childhood. If I didn’t have one of these sets on this page, don’t think I didn’t want it!

This was also made more impactful by me being able to track down the boxed Sea Sled this year. This was so well loved in my house.

If there is any testament to the power of Fisher-Price toys, it’s the fact that many of the items featured here had serious longevity. I had the three bottom items from the Fisher-Price play family series, namely the Farm, the parking garage and the ferry boat before I went to kindergarten and they’re still available for sale when I’m in the fifth grade. That my friends represent some serious staying power in the toy aisle.

The Fisher-Price Adventure People really hit their stride by this time. I had just about outgrown the series by then but I remember really wanting that submarine and squid. However, the siren call of sci-fi-related toys had won me over.

One of the most influential Action figure lines of the 1970s, the Fisher-Price Adventure People were North America’s first 3 3/4″ line of action figures and vehicles. These durable toys had a great deal of play value and the toy line lasted for nearly a decade, which in the toy industry is a solid win.

Here we have a glimpse at the 1983 Fisher-Price Adventure People catalog where the adventure has more of a sci-fi slant, which is not surprising considering the popularity of Star Wars and Masters of the Universe at that time.

The Alpha Star was a big-ticket item for Fisher-Price Adventure People in 1983, the addition of a space creature was unique to this set. The Alpha Star was a follow-up to the very popular Alpha Probe from the year previous. It is packed with electronic features like its predecessor.

The driver of the truck bears more than a passing resemblance to one Burt Reynolds. The Fisher-Price Adventure People kits were an attempt to get the child to build the vehicle they were about to play with and possibly attract a slightly older child.

The Motor Cross set was made entirely or retooled parts from earlier sets, the man in the cowboy hat is the Ranger from earlier sets while the van is from the “Action news Team” set. The Alpha Probe was electronic, very popular and was offered for a couple of years.

Despite all the Science Fiction in the line, the Adventure people never lost certain themes such as Underwater exploration and racing. These later sets represent a slightly more macho attitude than the sets of the mid-seventies which came with a dolphin instead of a shark.

Many of the individual Fisher-Price Adventure People figures are retooled from earlier sets and made “Spacey”, take a good look and you’ll recognize some of them. They’re now super popular in the “Garage Toy” industry.

Astro Knight used to come with a glider that was a lot of fun. Individually he had very limited articulation.

Fisher-Price created some of the most durable and well-remembered toys of our lifetime, if you’re a 70/80’s kid, you likely had wonderful afternoons with the little people and possibly graduated to the real-world action of the Adventure People.

1975 was an amazing year for Fisher-Price, not only did they launch the Adventure People but also released the Sesame Street Little People set, two incredibly iconic toys in one year.

The cover for the 1975 Fisher-Price Catalog looks a lot like my bedroom that Christmas, the safari people did a lot of driving by Sesame Street.

I still have every piece from my original  Adventure People Safari set and it’s all in great shape, built to last!.

The adventure people were a revolutionary line of toys, these 3 3/4″ dynamos would inspire Mego to create the Comic Action Heroes and a couple of years later Kenner would swipe their design with a little film called Star Wars, the rest is history.

The Sesame Street set is absolutely hands down, one of the greatest things Fisher-Price ever made. I have nothing but fond memories of this wonderful toy.

The Little People Castle really is an incredible set and I spent hours with that airport.

These pre school toys and little people sets would be sold for much of the 70s, some are still available today.

I honestly believe everyone was government issued that phone when I was a kid.

Issue 4 of Toy-Ventures magazine is now shipping, it’s full of cool toys from the 60s, 70s and 80s, get it while it’s hot!

Take this one for a store called “Hagensick’s Playroom” (great name) in Wisconsin, which features a veritable “who’s who” of hot items for the era.

A lot of 70s gold on this page, Sunshine Family, Remco Magic Hat, Kenner Tree-House and my favourites Aurora Kaaaarate Men!

It’s weird to see Mike Power: Atomic Man wedged in with a bunch of Tonka Trucks, the ’75 Christmas season was probably good for him until Kenner Six Million Dollar man toys showed up.

Fisher Price Adventure People quietly kicked off the 3 3/4″ revolution that would envelop our generation.

The sole Mego item i can find in this is the Wizard of Oz Play set, which makes this the first toy flyer from 1975 that doesn’t have Star Trek toys in it
