ShockTober at PlaidsStallions all October

It’s October, and that means it’s “ShockTober” at Plaid Stallions. We’ll be posting Halloween and monster-related items all month, including toys, rare advertisements, videos, and, of course, two horror-themed episodes of Pod Stallions.

To kick things off, I present my latest pick, the King Kong Jiggler by Ben Cooper. I don’t know what it is about the 1976 Kong Poster, but it just gets to me—way more than the actual film itself! Seeing that little rubber jet in his hand just sent my brain into “Buy It Now” mode before I knew what hit me. I also will admit that its price was a winning factor.

Ben Cooper Superhero Jigglers with the Hulk

I was jazzed to find this wonderful trade advert for the Ben Cooper Superhero Jigglers (their word was Wiggly but . Ben Cooper made these floppy figures for the better part of a decade and then they were bootlegged for another 10-15 years!

It was a good way to keep Ben Cooper products on store shelves year-round; Rubber bat sales really plummeted by November. 

Joining this assortment is the Incredible Hulk, whose TV Stardom made him an A-Lister in the Superhero Merchandise game. Like the Mego World’s Greatest Superheroes Hulk figure, the Hulk’s ample frame wasn’t cost-effective, so he’s considerably shorter than the other characters. Not that any of them can stand.

Ben Cooper tried to expand the selection of Superheroes but made some interesting choices, including The Thing, Doctor Strange and the Red Skull. The Thing and Doctor Strange had some TV appearances but I’ve never understood the Red Skull. Although I am grateful, that someone made a Red Skull toy!

Ben Cooper Mazinger and Darth Vader

I recently discovered this ad for Ben Cooper Halloween Costumes for 1978. I vividly remember getting that Darth Vader suit that year but being super jealous when my friend Jerry showed up at my door as Mazinga. What I find most interesting is the mention of  Ben Cooper”Man From Atlantis” Halloween costume.

I’m a bit of a Man from Atlantis fanboy, even though I admit the series isn’t very good. I wonder what the costume would have looked like. I mean, Mark just mainly wore yellow “short shorts.” Hopefully, someday the Ben Cooper art surfaces. Surfaces? Get it! I’m here all week.
